The speaker will be Ms. Karen Bentley, Mecklenburg County Commissioner since 2006. Ms. Bentley is currently on the Board of Directors for South Iredell-North Mecklenburg United Family Services and the Board of Directors for University City Partners. As this is a dignified ceremony and a special day for our graduates, faculty are reminded to wear appropriate clothing (dress slacks, skirts, or dress) beneath their gowns. Please do not wear shorts, jeans, sneakers, or flip-flops. Graduation programs will be in the seats for faculty and staff and for graduates; please do not carry programs in the processional. Make plans to attend one or more sessions on May 13 from 8:30 a.m.- 4:40 p.m. in the Levine IT building on Central Campus. Following are descriptions of two of the workshops: Did you know that "Provides Regular Feedback on Student Progress" was the lowest scoring category on the latest CPCC Student Opinion Survey for fall 2009? To learn more, take an hour and attend a workshop entitled "Feedback-Turn Up the Volume" at the Learning College Showcase on Thursday, May 13 at 12:30 p.m. in LT-4121. This workshop emphasizes the use of feedback as an assessment tool plus it highlights the pivotal role student feedback plays in targeting specific learning outcomes and assessments. Participants will learn practical and immediate ways to use feedback as a formative assessment method for learning in the classroom. The audience will be involved in developing examples of ideal feedback. Register in LearnerWeb. Learn how Service Learning initiatives can enrich courses in the STEMS division by attending the Learning College Showcase workshop entitled "Service-Learning at the Crossroads of Environmental Sustainability and Safe, Affordable Housing." CPCC faculty and students have engaged in a partnership with Habitat for Humanity, Sierra Club, and Green Homes to support an initiative designed to serve low income homeowners by conducting energy audits and home weatherization upgrades. The homeowners, often elderly or disabled, are identified by the Charlotte Habitat for Humanity Critical Repair Ministry. Following essential home repairs conducted by Habitat, CPCC students will work with Green Homes, a local energy audit start-up business, to conduct an energy audit and identify air leaks in the homes. Our students then work with the partnership to add insulation, weather stripping and caulk to tighten the homes and reduce interior/exterior air exchange. This workshop is scheduled for Thursday, May 13 at 1:30 p.m. in LT-4121. Register in LearnerWeb. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... What about students who continuously text their friends or take phone calls during class? How do you deal with a student who is openly disrespectful or hostile toward you? What about a student whose behavior makes you and other students feel unsafe? How can you foster an effective learning environment in light of these challenges? CPCC is now offering workshops designed to help instructors learn strategies for preventing or defusing disruptive situations in the classroom. Led by seasoned CPCC faculty members who have been recognized for their strong classroom management skills, these workshops will give participants an opportunity to develop new tools to deal with disruptive students. And for circumstances when even the best efforts fail, participants will learn procedures and policies that can be used to remove a student from the classroom or from campus. ESS Directors will present an overview of the Student Code of Conduct and student disciplinary procedures. Campus Security will be available to discuss how they respond to classroom disruptions. Topics will include the CPCC Care Team and the Campus Rapid Response Teams, designed to respond quickly to our most challenging threats to campus safety. All instructors are invited to attend these workshops, scheduled for Wednesday May 19 and Thursday May 20 on a variety of CPCC campuses. Please sign up in LearnerWeb. CPCC Critical Alert is an emergency only text messaging and direct, automated phone call system that alerts CPCC students, faculty and staff of emergency situations or inclement weather that results in unscheduled changes to campus operations. On May 14, all registered phone numbers will be cleared to ensure that we have accurate information for our current students, faculty and staff. To continue to receive emergency notifications, simply log into your CPCC Login after May 14 to re-register your emergency contact information. Your phone numbers can be updated at any time and your registration is good until May 2011. If you are including phone numbers of family or friends, please make sure that you have their permission before doing so. If you have included a phone number other than your personal phone number or have entered a number in error and we receive a request to have that number removed, we reserve the right to remove the information. Upon any change to your information, we will send notification to your CPCC e-mail account and you will be able to log in to re-enter the correct contact information. If you leave the College or would no longer like to receive emergency notifications, you can remove your contact information at any time by logging into your CPCC Login account and removing your information. Please remember, this system is only a part of the notification plan the College currently has in place. We encourage you to access all methods of communication provided by the College during a crisis situation. For emergency information visit CPCC Emergency Services. Thank you. Entering the arena may be slowed due to security screening; please allow additional time for this. Faculty members are reminded that one of the responsibilities of a full-time faculty member is to participate in activities which enhance the College's service to students and to the community. Participation in graduation ceremonies is one way faculty meet this responsibility. The Adult High School/GED graduation ceremony will begin at 1:30 pm. The speaker will be Ms. Karen Bentley, Mecklenburg County Commissioner since 2006. Ms. Bentley is currently on the Board of Directors for South Iredell-North Mecklenburg United Family Services and the Board of Directors for University City Partners. Faculty planning to march in the procession should plan to arrive at 1:00 pm and be in line to march by 1:15 pm. The College graduation ceremony will begin at 7:00 pm. The speaker will be Mr. Anthony Foxx, Mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina. Mayor Foxx began his political career in 2005 with his election to City Council as an At-Large representative and served two terms before being elected Mayor in 2009. He has been a member of the Mecklenburg County Education Budget Advisory Committee since 2002 and has served on the boards of the Mecklenburg County Bar Foundation, Community School of the Arts, YMCA Camp Thunderbird, Trust for Public Land (Carolinas Region), and Focus on Future leaders. Faculty planning to march in the procession should plan to arrive at 6:30 pm and be in line to march by 6:45 pm. Faculty members are asked to form two lines when preparing for the processional. Volunteers will be on hand to assist you. Male and female dressing rooms will be available for faculty, but these will remain unlocked during the ceremony, so please leave valuables locked in the trunk of your car. Thank you for making this a special day for our graduates. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I am pleased to announce the following initiatives in collaboration with Information Technology Services. Liaison between Learning and Information Technology Services A full-time faculty member will be reassigned for a year to become the liaison between our areas. The selected individual will become part of Information Technology Services management team for this period, and work closely with faculty across the College to facilitate communications and technology planning and implementation. In the near future, a detailed invitation will be posted for interested faculty who wish to apply for this role. iPad Pilot Mobile computing platforms are evolving and it is important that the College is well prepared to leverage these tools as more consumers and our students adopt these technologies. In this spirit, a pilot program will provide one faculty member in each Learning division with an Apple iPad (16G, WiFi) to take home over the summer, learn how to use it, and then come back in the fall with recommendations about how the tool can be used to enhance any element of teaching, learning, collaboration, or communication. That same instructor will have use of the iPad for next year and be expected to incorporate some of the recommendations. Broadband Internet Access Twenty Five (25) faculty members will be provided ClearWire 4G high-speed wireless modems for use from home to connect to College systems and resources on the internet. This access is targeted for communication and collaboration with colleagues and students to promote research, exploration, and learning. Interested faculty are advised to check the Clear coverage map at http://www.clear.com/callnow/coverage/ and select Charlotte to determine if their home has coverage (dark green) and then submit a broadband internet grant application for consideration. Travel to Technology Conferences Additional funds are being made available to encourage faculty professional development related to information technologies. Four awards of up to $1,500 each are available this year (between now and June 2011) for attendance at regional or national technology conferences. Participants will be expected to provide a written report of their observations and ideas developed as a result of their attendance at these conferences. Interested faculty are encouraged to visit http://www.cpcc.edu/pd/funding/tier-a and submit their Faculty Upgrade Allotment (Tier A) form. Foreign Language Learning Program The highly recommended Rosetta Stone language-learning program for free is being extended beyond its current end date of July 2101. In addition, licenses are being increased to accommodate double the number of participants. Employees who sign up will have three months of unlimited access to the Rosetta Stone online learning system, with professional development credit available. Interested faculty and staff and encouraged to sign up at http://inside.cpcc.edu/profdev/Rosetta_Stone.ASP and enhance their knowledge of a foreign language in this age of globalization. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Under the banner of Rent-A-Text, we believe offering rental textbooks through this program will: * Save students money. Rental can save students 50 percent or more on the cost of their textbooks * Support strong learning and study habits. Students can continue to highlight and take notes in their rented textbooks. They will also have the option to keep the book at the end of a term. * Make it easier for students to get all their books when they need them. Students will be able to purchase, pickup and return textbooks either in our campus stores or online and have numerous choices for payment, including being able to use their financial aid. But you play a critical role in making this possible for our students. First, consider adopting titles that are available for rental. Your bookstores are compiling a comprehensive, national rental list, which will be available at www.rent-a-text.com . We want to make rental available to as many students as possible. Second, if you don't see a title you want on the national rental list, our bookstore managers can work with you to make specific books eligible for Rent-A-Text with a multiple term adoption. Online forms to electronically submit a request to make a title rentable can be found at www.rent-a-text.com . Finally, your students should know the work you have done to make rental textbooks accessible for them. We'll provide you with information and an approved Rent-A-Text mark you can use on your syllabus to inform students on how to find the rental options you make available. As partners in education, we all have a role in lowering education costs. As a faculty member, you have the power to select course materials and provide a major cost savings opportunity for your students to ensure they come to class equipped to learn. During the next few months, you will hear more about the Rent-A-Text program from the bookstore. In the meantime, I encourage you to visit www.rent-a-text.com for program information and updates. The previous domain, CPCC.CC.NC.US, still exists but will be retired on June 1st, 2010. The retirement of this domain will reduce confusion among students and staff and provide a consistent naming scheme across all online services. Information Technology Services is requesting that you verify your mailing list subscriptions and other email-related correspondence and update your lists and notify any contacts to use the official CPCC.EDU domain. Additionally, if you are using the CPCC.CC.NC.US domain for website links on non-CPCC websites, you are encouraged to update those links to use the official CPCC.EDU domain as they will no longer work after the domain is retired.
