As many of you are aware, there are increasing numbers of confirmed
cases of the H1N1 Flu (Swine Flu) in the U.S., with each individual
experiencing mild "flu-like" symptoms. There have been no confirmed
cases in the Mecklenburg County area.
The safety and wellbeing of our students and employees are CPCC's top
concerns; therefore, we are closely monitoring the situation and will
keep you informed regarding any developments that may impact the
College.
As a precaution, follow the guidelines below to stop the spread of
germs:
* Cover your mouth: When you sneeze or cough, cough into your
upper sleeve, use tissues and discard them properly.
* Wash your hands: Wash your hands often with soap and water for
at least 20 seconds, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based
hand cleansers are also effective.
* Keep a social distance of at least three feet.
Additional information is available on the CDC H1N1 Flu web site at:
http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/.

Message-ID: <30CD126F8D67A04BB0CD07407FE8329C01F05063@CEVS6-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
Message from Paul Santos in Human Resources:
Overtime Eligibility for Classified Employees
FLSA (Federal Labor Standards Act) sets forth rules under which
non-exempt (hourly) employees are eligible for overtime pay.
Non-exempt (classified) employees are eligible for overtime once 40
hours of work have been completed in a given work week. The FLSA
defines an employee's workweek as a "fixed and regularly recurring
period of 168 hours - seven consecutive 24-hour periods".
Please note, non-exempt employees are not eligible for overtime pay on a
daily basis. An example of this would be if they work more than 8 hours
in one day, they do not receive overtime pay for that day. They must
work more than 40 hours in a given work week to receive overtime pay.
For more information on how you can be sure you're complying with the
FLSA rules, please go to the Department of Labor's web site at
http://www.dol.gov/esa/whd/overtime_pay.htm.
For more information on how to track time at CPCC in compliance with
FLSA rules, follow this link to Policy 4.13 Workloads for Non-Exempt
(classified) Personnel:

Ozone season is well underway and continues through September 30. This
is an important time for our region, as the data from this summer will
determine whether our region is required to be reclassified from a
"moderate" to a "serious" nonattainment area. Time is running out for
our region to meet the 1997 NAAQS for
ground-level ozone.
The College's Environmental Health and Safety Department (EHS
) would like to remind all employees and
departments to take action on Ozone Action Days when air quality is
unhealthy. You can help by participating in one or more of the
following:
* Don't Drive Day! This Thursday, May 7. Participate by riding
the bus, carpooling, riding LYNK, walking, biking, telecommuting, etc.
Participate and register at the Don't Drive Day! Charlotte - Mecklenburg
Website . You can also register by
phone by calling 311, or from outside Mecklenburg County (704) 336-5500.
Try a new way to get to work and qualify to win an iPod Touch, digital
camera, solar phone charger, or programmable thermostat. EHS will be
offering additional prizes to all eligible participants! Entries are
due by 12 noon on May 8, 2009, and winners must live or work in the
Charlotte non-attainment area - Cabarrus, Gaston, Iredell, Mecklenburg,
Lincoln, Rowan, Union, and York (SC) counties!
* Subscribe to EnviroFlash
to receive daily air quality
forecasts specifically for our region.
* The College is also looking for volunteers from each building,
at each campus, to help turn the air quality dial each day throughout
ozone season. This information is displayed on a poster and will help
spread the message to each of our employees and students. Please
contact Tracie Kanellopoulos
by email or by calling extension 6580 if you would like
help.
* Attend the Employee Health and Fitness Day
on
Wednesday, May 13, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., Third Floor of the Overcash
Building. EHS employees will host a booth on air quality, pandemic
awareness, and body fat analysis (along with many other exhibitors!)
* Learn more about air quality by attending Air Quality 101 on
Wednesday, May 27, from 11 a.m. - 12 noon in the Information Technology
Building. Representatives from Mecklenburg County Air Awareness
and
Clean Air Works! will offer an
insightful presentation on air quality information and what you can do
to help the region meet attainment.
* Get your gas caps checked and, if necessary, replaced for FREE
by driving through the Gas Cap Check on Central Campus, Thursday, May
28, at the Central Campus Employee Parking Deck.
* Review important Air Quality Action Tips
.
* Purchase discounted bus passes at CPCC Bookstores and
Cashier's Offices. Savings are offered to all employees and students.
* Weekly Bus Pass $10.50
* 10-Ride Local $10.50

CPCC is working closely with local health authorities to monitor the
H1N1 flu situation and to respond appropriately should a case be
confirmed in our area. As of now, no cases have been confirmed in
Mecklenburg County.
Over the coming weeks, or even months, you may hear of coworkers or
students who have become ill with flu-like symptoms. These symptoms do
not necessarily mean that someone has contracted H1N1. Please keep in
mind that regardless of whether H1N1 is diagnosed in someone else, the
Centers for Disease Control and other public health organizations
recommend that the best thing you can do to help ensure you remain
healthy is to stop the spread of germs.
* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or
sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
* If no tissue is available, cough into your shirt sleeve.
* Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you
cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs can be spread
this way.
* Try to avoid close contact with sick people. Avoid shaking
hands; do a fist-bump or elbow-bump as an alternative.
* If you or a family member becomes sick with flu-like symptoms,
stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from
infecting them. Seek medical attention if needed.
We have attached a 'stop the spread of germs' flier, and we encourage
you to print the flier and post it in your work area and/or classroom.
If other preventive advice is developed by the Centers for Disease
Control regarding H1N1, we will provide that information promptly.
If you would like additional information about H1N1 and local efforts to
deal with the virus, visit

Welcome to your new Communicator!
In our continued effort to get important information to you quickly, we
have redesigned the Communicator. Information is updated throughout the
day to bring you the most up-to-date college and employee news, so no
matter when you read the newsletter it will always have something new!
Communicator
The new Communicator has RSS feeds .
* What is an RSS feed? By subscribing to an RSS feed you will
automatically receive updates daily about the information that you have
subscribed to. Look for the orange symbol above in the Communicator. You
will notice that you can subscribe to the entire Communicator or to
individual sections. As we move many of the advisory emails into the
Communicator, you may want to subscribe to that particular feed.
Remember, we will continue to send you the Communicator every Thursday
and every time you view it, it will have updated information. The RSS
feeds will simply send the information directly to you daily if you
subscribe.
* If I subscribe, where are the RSS feeds sent? In your Outlook
mail folders, you will notice a folder with the orange RSS feed symbol.
All RSS feeds that you subscribe to will be sent to this folder.
* Will I still receive information if I do not subscribe to the RSS
feeds? Yes, the Communicator will be sent to your inbox every Thursday
as usual. We will be updating the Communicator daily and subscriptions
to these feeds will send the updates to you daily. You can still view
the updates by simply visiting The Communicator.
* On the RSS feed updates, I can't see pictures. With the RSS feeds
you will not be able to see the color images. You will only be able to
view text.
* Where can I change the Communicator to a print format so I can
print and read it? As we look for ways to conserve resources at the
College, The Communicator has been designed to view online as often as
you like.
Search past issues of the Communicator by keyword
or by issue date
.
The Communicator is the official newsletter of CPCC. Please submit news
items to CPCC Office of Community Relations
before 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. If
submitting from outside the CPCC email system, please identify yourself
with name, department, phone, and email address in your email message.
Anonymous submissions will not be published. Late items will be held for
the following issue. All submissions are subject to editing. If you have
questions, contact Elizabeth Cooper.

Message-ID: <30CD126F8D67A04BB0CD07407FE8329C01F05151@CEVS6-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
Message from the President:
I am very pleased to announce that Richard Zollinger has been selected
as the new Vice President for Learning at Central Piedmont Community
College effective July 1. After an extensive national search and open
candidate forums, the College Cabinet reviewed feedback from across the
College that expressed confidence that Richard demonstrates the
qualities and possesses the professional experience that the College
needs. He is committed, competent, and has demonstrated the ability to
handle difficult and complex issues. Richard's CPCC experience includes
learning English as a student, teaching curriculum classes, leading the
opening of Levine Campus, and serving for eight years as Associate VP.
As a result, Richard has an unparalleled depth of understanding and true
appreciation of faculty and all that the College does.
I hope that you will congratulate Richard on his selection and I trust
that he can count on your support as he begins the latest challenge in
his career.
Thanks!
Tony Zeiss

Message-ID: <30CD126F8D67A04BB0CD07407FE8329C01F051CB@CEVS6-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From the Office of the Vice-President for Learning:
With the end of the exam period today, this is a reminder about posting
final grades.
We cannot stress enough the importance of submitting grades on time for
the financial aid process of satisfactory academic progress (SAP). SAP
is a Department of Education-mandated process completed each semester to
determine if a student maintained minimum standards during the semester
to continue receiving financial assistance.
We have had instances in the past where not all grades were submitted on
time and ineligible students were permitted to receive aid. It was not
until all grades were in that they were determined to be ineligible, and
Financial Aid/Veteran Affairs had to bill the student and return funds
to the Department of Education. This is a disservice to students and
increases college liability.
The spring term ends on May 12, and grades are required to be posted
within 48 hours. Students will begin purchasing books using financial
aid on May 13. All grades must be in no later than May 14 so that FA/VA
can complete the SAP process to prevent ineligible students from
receiving aid.

please allow additional time for this.
The Adult High School/GED graduation ceremony will begin at 1:30 pm. The

Please note that CPCC has followed the directive in Governor Perdue's
Executive Order No. 11
,
and all state-funded, full-time CPCC employees will see a 0.5% reduction
split between their May and June paychecks. While a reduction was also
taken from part-time employees, because those employees will be unable
to take furlough time like full-timers, their checks were supplemented
with institutional funds and they will not see a reduction in their
paychecks.
If you have any questions regarding the Executive Order and CPCC's
response to that directive, you can visit the newly created Questions &
Answers page.

All employees who have a balance of more than 240 hours of vacation
leave at the end of this fiscal year, will have the hours in excess of
240 hours rolled over to their sick leave account. Therefore, employees
have through June 30th to take vacation leave if they do not wish to
have it converted.
Currently, WebAdvisor is showing leave taken through March and earned
through April. Employees should check their vacation balances and
consult with their supervisors if they wish to schedule vacation during
the remainder of this fiscal year.
Please contact Linda Anderson at 6314 if you have any questions or

Dear Colleagues:
Summer is upon us, but there is still time to make a gift by June 30 to
the employee Family Campaign and be included in the College's next
Annual Report.
Our College, students, and colleagues have never needed our support
more. We can designate our gifts to the Mitchell Hagler Scholarship, or
many other scholarship, program, and campus funds. Set an example for
the community and rise to the challenge of helping when times are
toughest.
Foundation representatives are still combing campuses looking for donors
wearing the green bracelets received when a gift is made. So far, your
colleagues below have been lucky winners. Make a gift now and maybe you
will be next on the list. Be sure to wear your green bracelet through
June... we're looking for you!
We are pleased that payroll deduction is now available by clicking here
, as is on-line
giving by credit card, or more information about the campaign. Every
gift helps change the lives of students.
Thank you to the many who have responded, and to the many who still will
by year end.

* Will I still receive information if I do not subscribe to the
RSS feeds? Yes, the Communicator will be sent to your inbox every
Thursday as usual. We will be updating the Communicator daily and
subscriptions to these feeds will send the updates to you daily. You can
still view the updates by simply visiting The Communicator.
* On the RSS feed updates, I can't see pictures. With the RSS
feeds you will not be able to see the color images. You will only be
able to view text.
Please submit news
items to CPCC Office of Community Relations
. If submitting from outside the CPCC
email system, please identify yourself with name, department, phone, and
email address in your email message. Anonymous submissions will not be
published. Late items will be held for the following issue. All
submissions are subject to editing. If you have questions, contact
Elizabeth Cooper.

Subject: [Cpcommunicator] Important Message for Faculty Participating in
College Graduation
Message-ID: <30CD126F8D67A04BB0CD07407FE8329C01F0524A@CEVS6-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
Congratulations on finishing another year! We look forward to seeing
you in your caps and gowns at the Coliseum this evening.
This College graduation ceremony will be one of our biggest ever, with
nearly 560 students crossing the stage, and with a growing number of
faculty members participating. This large number of participants
creates increasing challenges in starting the program promptly at 7:00
pm, and in conducting the program at a pace that allows us to wrap up as
closely to 9 pm as possible.
We are asking that you support the efforts of our graduation volunteers
and coordinators by doing a few things:
1) Please arrive at the Coliseum no later than 6:30 pm, and earlier
if possible. We will ask you to move toward the concourse area for the
faculty line-up when you are finished in the dressing room. It is very
important that you are dressed and in the faculty line-up area by 6:45.
2) Faculty will enter the room in two single-file lines, with each
line entering the rows of chairs from opposite sides of the faculty
seating area. Prior to the ceremony, faculty will be lined-up in the
lower concourse in two lines in a relatively narrow hallway. If you
plan to sit with a group of friends and colleagues, your group should
remain in the same single-file line. Otherwise, you will end up in
different rows on the floor (and your group may end up in different rows
anyway, depending on where your group happens to end up in the rows).
Please pay close attention and follow the direction of the faculty
marshals as you are being seated.
3) At approximately 6:50, we will bring the platform guests through
the hallway used for your faculty line-up area. We will ask that you
are particularly attentive to the locations of the two lines, marked
with tape on the floor, so we are better able to move the 25+ platform
guests past the faculty to the back of the room and begin the ceremony
promptly at 7:00 pm.
Thank you for participating in the College Graduation ceremony. We
appreciate you doing your part to help us organize the large numbers of
faculty in the line-up area.

For Part-time Hiring Managers in the Learning Unit and Enrollment &
Student Services
The new Veterans Act statute (GS 128-15) requires employers to give
preferential treatment in all hiring decisions to otherwise qualified
applicants. What this means to us as an employer is that we must track
all external and internal part time job applicants.
Our applicant tracking system, PeopleClick, has been an invaluable tool
in helping us track applicants throughout the hiring process. Up until
now, we have tracked all full time hires in PeopleClick.
Tracking part time applicants in PeopleClick is a departure from past
practice. We will be offering training to all hiring managers that will
help them understand and navigate the hiring process in PeopleClick.
Our Director of Employee Recruitment and Selection, Ashley Linder, is
inviting hiring managers responsible for part time hiring to PeopleClick
training, Thursday, May 21st at 11AM, in Overcash Room 340. Training
is recommended because we will no longer use the paper application
process effective July 1, 2009. Registration will be available on
LearnerWeb and will count toward PD credit.
Tracking part time hires within the PeopleClick system will benefit us
in a number of ways:
* We will have a record of all applicants for a given job
readily available to us for present and future jobs we're recruiting
for.
* We will eliminate the time consuming paper-based application
process for the applicant.
* We will eliminate the filing/storage of paper-based
applications by hiring managers.
* We will documentation ensuring the objectivity of our hiring
decisions.
* We will be in compliance with the new statute.
I look forward to your support in ensuring that all part-time hiring
managers attend this training.

Message-ID: <30CD126F8D67A04BB0CD07407FE8329C01F05359@CEVS6-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>

Message-ID: <30CD126F8D67A04BB0CD07407FE8329C01F05382@CEVS6-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
In the message that was sent earlier regarding furlough time, we
erroneously referred to the ten hours as unpaid time instead of paid
time. We apologize for the confusion and thank those who brought this to
our attention.
As directed in Governor Perdue's Executive Order No.11
, all state-funded, full-time CPCC employees
may take ten hours of furlough (paid) time between now and December 31,
2009. Please follow the same approval and notification processes that
you would for any vacation or personal leave as outlined in Policy 4.16
Vacation/Personal Leave
. You must take
your furlough time in a minimum of one hour increments and record it on
your timesheet as "furlough."
If you have any questions regarding the Executive Order and CPCC's
response to that directive, you can visit the newly created Questions &
Answers page.

>From Beverly Russell
It is with great sadness that the CPCC Arts and Communication Division
announces the death of Georgia Tucker, instructor in dance appreciation
and ballet at the Levine Campus.
Georgia attended the NC School of the Arts, CPCC, UNCC and NYU where she
received her Master's Degree in Dance. As a professional dancer she
performed in Houston, Hawaii and Portland and also performed for five
years with CPCC Dance Central where she was the recipient of the Patrice
Burnside Award. Recently she worked as a volunteer dance therapist with
Easter Seals UCP, Children's Center in Charlotte.
Georgia had a charismatic stage presence and danced a number of major
roles in CPCC Dance Central and CPCC Opera Theater productions. Her
last major role here was in Giselle in 2002.
Georgia died after a brief illness on Sunday, May 24. The family will
hold a private graveside service.

Get your automobile's gas cap checked and, if necessary, replaced for
FREE by driving through our Gas Cap Check today - Thursday, May 28, from
3 - 6 p.m. at the Central Campus Employee Parking Deck.
* Leaking gas caps contribute to air pollution and waste fuel
due to evaporation.
* The US Car Care Council estimates, 17% of vehicle gas caps are
either damaged or missing allowing 147 million gallons of gasoline to
vaporize every year.
* Gas caps can leak regardless of the age of the vehicle (higher
if vehicle is more than 3 yrs old).
* Every leaking gas cap = approximately 200 pounds of evaporative
emissions per year (0.1 tons of VOCs).
* Thirty gallons of gasoline can be released annually from a
leaking gas cap.

>From Ashley Linder
