Making up missed class time should be completed in as nonstressful a way as possible for our students. When it comes to make-up options, one size does not fit all because at CPCC the enormous diversity in class locations and restrictions makes for a complex situation. The College position is that within the confines of space limitations, course content, etc., instructors should work with students to provide the maximum number of hours of instruction listed in the class schedule. In some cases, instructors are able to add additional time to other classes; schedule an additional class sometime during the semester; hold conferences with individual students; assign work to be completed online or in the library, etc. For auditing purposes, an instructor must note on the 10% roster the reason a class was not held and what the students did to make up the time. If you have questions, please call Cathey Ross, 6576, or Richard Zollinger, 6730. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... All facilities will be closed on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, except the following: * Harper Campus will be open for scheduled classes only. * The Hendrick Center on Levine Campus will be open for scheduled classes only. * The Overcash Center on Central Campus will be open for scheduled classes and performances only. * The Harris Conference Center will open for scheduled events only. The College will operate Monday through Thursday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Employees will work a full 40-hour work week Monday through Thursday, with a 30-minute lunch break. Please note that this schedule is for one 12-week period only, and is not CPCC's standard operating procedure. All supervisors are encouraged to work with employees to minimize the effect of scheduling difficulties, including child care issues, evening commitments, etc. We appreciate your understanding, cooperation and flexibility. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The new system, called SYMPHONY, is a versatile, user-friendly program that will help the library continue to meet the ever-expanding information needs of students, faculty, staff and our community users. All CPCC libraries will be closed during the spring break from March 9-14, 2009, to complete the upgrade and to conduct training for library staff. Although the physical libraries will be closed, CPCC student, faculty and staff can still access online library resources 24/7 via our website and/or by using our Ask a Librarian services. Please be mindful that the system (cataloging/circulation) will be down to implement the conversion. This means that you will NOT be able to use the online catalog to locate books, renew items or check out any library materials! However, access to the online databases and other online resources should not be affected. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this innovative transition. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The purpose of the event is to assist professionals in Mecklenburg County who have recently lost their jobs or are in danger of losing their jobs due to downsizing. Community, College and employer resources will be on hand to answer questions and provide resources to help with job searches, life coping and new opportunities for personal and professional growth. In addition, workshops will be offered throughout the day. Originally set for March 2, the event was canceled due to inclement weather. Over 400 people had registered for the event. We are planning for maximum capacity and need more volunteers. Three, 3.5-hour volunteer shift options are available to choose from: 8-11:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and 3-6:30 p.m. Please try to carve time out of your busy schedule to assist with this important event and help position CPCC as a valuable community resource to those in need. By registering in LearnerWeb, you can receive volunteer credit. Awarding volunteer credit is something relatively new at the College. According to Debbie Bouton, we now categorize College-sponsored development opportunities as either professional, personal, or volunteer. There are certain activities that do not fall within the guidelines for professional development, but are still important for personal enrichment or for service to the College or the community. If you would like to receive volunteer credit for your efforts, please register in LearnerWeb. We have all heard about the recent spending restrictions regarding travel. Because this falls into the category of "involving an employees' routine job requirements within the College's service area," you will be reimbursed for mileage if you are travelling between campuses. These changes affect students attending this College. The Admissions/Student Records Office will send out email broadcasts with examples to help update all staff and faculty of these changes so that we may all follow these important guidelines. The following is a hypothetical situation that serves as a example of what to do and what not to do under the new FERPA guidelines: Example: Sara's mother goes to the campus and pays her tuition. The kind cashier then hands her a copy of the receipt with the student's name, ID number; and class schedule, thanking her for taking care of that for her daughter. Is this a FERPA violation according to the directory information that the college releases? ANSWER: According to the college policy as stated in the catalog, only directory information can be released without the student's consent unless they opt out and request "Private Directory Information." The receipt as indicated above has other important student information printed that would be a violation of the student's FERPA rights. SOLUTION: Either change the information on the receipt that is issued to student, or if someone other than the student is paying in person the cashier's office should mail the receipt to the student. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The routines feature interval training sessions where fast and slow rhythms, and dance training are combined to tone and sculpt your body while burning fat. Zumba gold was designed for the active older adult, the true beginner, and/or people who are not used to exercising, or people who may be limited physically. The main difference between Zumba Gold and Zumba Basic is Zumba Gold is done at a lower intensity, not as fast, but it certainly is as fun. The same great Latin styles of music and dance are used. Cynthia Smith and Sondra Hines, Health and Physical Education department, are the instructors. Bring a co-worker, wear comfortable clothes, soft shoes and have fun while burning calories. * Central Campus on Tuesday, March 17- May 26, from 4:45-5:45 p.m. in SL 221 * Central Campus on Thursday, March 26- April 23, from 12:00-12:40 p.m. in SL 221 If you have any questions, please contact Libby Vagnoni at 4273 or send email to: libby.vagnoni at cpcc.edu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Today's Question: How do I know which classes transfer from CPCC to a university? The Comprehensive Articulation Agreement between the NC Community College System and the University of North Carolina designates the courses that transfer within NC. In the CPCC catalog, transferable courses have a statement in italics in the course description which states that the course is included in the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA). Each institution in the UNC system awards transfer credit for students who complete these courses with a "C" or higher. The transfer credit given at each UNC institution is available online . In addition to the UNC institutions, the following private colleges and universities endorse the CAA and accept the same list of courses for transfer credit: Barton College, Belmont Abbey College, Bennett College, Brevard College, Campbell University, Catawba College, Chowan College, Gardner-Webb University, Johnson C. Smith University, Livingstone College, Louisburg College, Mars Hill College, Montreat College, Mount Olive College, NC Wesleyan College, Pfeiffer University, Queens University of Charlotte, St. Andrews Presbyterian College, Saint Augustine's College, Shaw University, Warren Wilson College, and Wingate University. Courses other than those listed in the CAA may also transfer. These, however, are based on the decisions of individual schools and should be verified by them. CPCC courses also transfer to institutions outside NC. Since these institutions determine transfer credit individually, students planning to transfer out-of-state should contact the admissions office of their transfer destination for more information. Admissions representatives from a variety of universities visit CPCC to talk with prospective transfer students on Transfer Tuesdays. The schedule of visitors is online . For more information on transfer advising, register in LearnerWeb for "How to Advise College Transfer Students" on March 17 or 19. This workshop uses the program evaluation in WebAdvisor, degree check lists, and student scenarios to equip you for advising transfer students. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Today's Question: My advisee asked me why she should graduate from CPCC before transferring to a university. What are the advantages? Associate in Arts (A.A.) and Associate in Science (A.S.) graduates complete the general education requirements of a bachelor's degree and arrive at the senior institution as juniors when they transfer to UNC or a private school that participates in the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement (CAA). They have the advantage of CPCC's tuition savings, accessibility, and small class size for all their freshman and sophomore courses. Additionally, the CAA guarantees that A.A. and A.S. degrees transfer as a block (instead of course-by-course) to meet general education requirements. For example, if an A.A. graduate took British literature but her senior institution required all sophomores to take American literature, the A.A. graduate would be exempt from American literature. Her general education requirements are completed by her A.A. degree, even if her courses differ from the general education requirements of the senior institution. A student who transferred prior to graduating would have her transfer credit evaluated course-by-course, so she would have to take American literature to meet the senior institution's general education requirements. These advantages may or may not apply to out-of-state schools, so students need to consult with their intended transfer institution. However, regardless of their transfer destination, students who leave CPCC with an associate's degree are college graduates. The associate's degree opens employment doors that are closed to students who have a collection of college courses but no degree. For more information on transfer advising, register in LearnerWeb for "How to Advise College Transfer Students" on March 19. The "Making Work Pay" provision includes a 6.2 percent reduction of federal income tax (F.I.T.) withholding to be implemented by employers for pay dates effective on April 1, 2009. Employees who qualify for this credit will see a reduction in their federal income tax withholding beginning with part-time pay date of April 15, 2009, and full-time pay date of April 30, 2009. The reduction in tax withholding will automatically continue with each subsequent paycheck until the maximum credit is reached. You do not have to submit a Form W-4, Employee's Withholding Allowance Certificate, as these reductions will take place automatically through the revised I.R.S. tax tables already updated within our payroll system. If you do not want to have your withholding reduced (because, for example, you have more than one job or you are married and your combined income places you in a higher tax bracket), you may want to file a new Form W-4. You may claim fewer withholding allowances on line 5 or request additional amounts to be withheld on line 6. Today's Question: My advisee wants to transfer to a university as soon as possible instead of completing a degree here. What courses should I recommend? There are many advantages to staying at CPCC and transferring with an associate's degree, but some students are in a hurry to get to a university. Often these students enroll at CPCC to repair deficiencies in their academic history in order to qualify for admission at a university. Students who need to repair their academic history should complete ten transferable courses called the Minimum Course Requirements (MCR) made up of two college-level courses in each of these subjects: English, math, natural science, social/behavioral science, and foreign language. Here is a sample plan for a student who wants to transfer as soon as possible: English ENG 111 ENG 112, 113, or 114 Math MAT 161 MAT 155 & MAT 155A Natural Science BIO 111 BIO 112 Social/Behavioral Science HIS 111 HIS 112 Foreign Language FRE 111 & FRE 181 FRE 112 & FRE 182 Once completed, this collection of courses allows a student to be admitted to a university based on their CPCC performance instead of their high school grades and SAT score. (Students who apply for admission to a university prior to completing these courses will be evaluated on both their high school and college transcripts.) It is possible to complete the MCR in two semesters if a student places out of all developmental English, reading, and math courses when he or she takes the placement test. More often, however, students need developmental courses prior to enrolling in the classes listed above. For more information on transfer advising, join us this afternoon for "How to Advise College Transfer Students" on Central Campus, 3-4:30 p.m. in Terrell 500. Today's question: My advisee wants to major in a field that I don't know much about. How do I know what courses to recommend? In the 2008-09 CPCC catalog on pages 201-203, there are course recommendations to align the Associate in Arts, Associate in Science, and Associate in Fine Arts degrees with specific majors at the senior institution. These recommendations are adapted from the pre-major guidelines that used to be in the catalog. Program requirements at senior institutions vary from school to school, and while the courses in the advising chart align with the requirements at most institutions, it is the student's responsibility to confirm that these courses are required at the intended transfer institution. Faculty advisors and students can call, e-mail, or stop by the Transfer Resource Center for assistance with researching the course requirements for a senior institution. The Transfer Resource Center is located on Central Campus in Central High Building, Room 100. The phone number is 704-330-6454. Over the past several months, we have worked to develop an improved publication that highlights our numerous services and degree programs in an easy-to-read format and demonstrates our commitment to setting the standard in environmental sustainability. The new CPCC Course Guide is smaller in size and a great reference for students as they plan for registration. The Corporate and Continuing education classes that were in the back of the former schedule will now have their own publication! All of the great CCE classes will be in one handy schedule with the same detailed descriptions and information as before. We strive to achieve customer service excellence in all areas, and we recognize that the printed schedule was not always accurate at the time of distribution, as course dates change, classrooms are reassigned and instructors switch classes. Therefore, through our communications and marketing efforts, we will encourage students, faculty and staff to visit schedule.cpcc.edu for up-to-date information on class sections, descriptions, meeting dates, times and locations. To reduce the production and distribution costs associated with the Schedule and Course Guide, we will no longer be delivering them directly to homes via the local paper. Instead we will be announcing the start of registration through both direct mail and a post-it note on The Charlotte Observer. In late April, Course Guides for curriculum students will be available on all six CPCC campuses, and CCE Schedules can be found on all campuses, at Charlotte-Mecklenburg public libraries and by calling 704.330.4223. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... "T" becomes enraged in the meeting and threatens retaliation. As a result, "T" is suspended, withdrawn and banned from all campuses. Knowing how angry "T" was, the dean sends an email to ALL of "T's" instructors, letting them know what happened and telling them that she is not allowed back in any of her classes as well as back on the campus. Somehow "T" learns of this email and cries foul, stating that the dean has overstepped his duties and that nothing should have been sent to all of her teachers. Is this a FERPA violation? Answer: According to FERPA, an educational institution may "take into account the totality of the circumstances," basing its judgment on the information available at the time. When there is an articulable and significant threat to the health or safety of a student or other individuals, the institution may make a disclosure to any person whose knowledge of the information is necessary to protect against the threat. In this case the dean was right in letting the instructors know for their safety and also that of the students in their classes. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As always, the campus competition is fierce. North Campus won both trophies last year and is therefore the target that everyone wants to beat. Please see your campus captains to find out the best way to register. With the budget reductions, it is even more important to come out and support the College and our students. The dollars we raise will help more students be able to attend CPCC. Please see your campus captains (listed below) to find out the best way to register. The race registration fee is $18 for those who register before April 19. You may also visit the Skyline Run website. P.S. don't forget that our ArtsFest event starts at 10 a.m. on the 25th. The Adult High School/GED ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The College ceremony is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. All CPCC faculty and staff and all guests will need to go through a security check, so please allow adequate time. According to the full-time instructor job description, one of the responsibilities of a full-time faculty member is to participate in activities which enhance the College's service to students and to the community. Participation in graduation ceremonies is one way faculty meet this responsibility. Because the College conducts only one graduation ceremony each year, all faculty are expected to march in cap and gown in the ceremony unless they are assisting with graduation as a member of the graduation committee or as a volunteer or unless they are participating in or assisting with the Adult High School/GED ceremony. If a faculty member is unable to participate in the graduation ceremony, the faculty member is expected to inform the division director. Exceptions to active participation in the graduation ceremony will be handled on an individual basis at the division level. Regalia are on sale now at the CPCC Majors Bookstore. Faculty are reminded that rental orders need to be placed by April 10, 2009, and purchases of the Class Keeper Graduate Fabric need to be ordered by April 3, 2009, in order to arrive in time for the ceremony. Mark Helms is coordinating volunteers for the College graduation, and Florence Patterson is coordinating volunteers for the Adult High School/GED graduation. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We encourage all employees to participate in one of the following dance/fitness classes offered on Central Campus or another campus location. Aerobics at Cato, Harris and North: Aerobics is a form of physical exercise that combines rhythmic aerobic exercise with stretching and floor exercises with the goal of improving all elements of fitness (flexibility , muscular strength , and cardio-vascular fitness). Come work-out, have fun and enjoy the music. * Cato Campus on Thursday from 2-3 p.m. in Cato 270 (contact Saronda Easter for more information) * Harris Campus on Wednesday from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in HA 1236 (contact Van Branch for more information) * North Campus on Tuesday from 4-5 p.m. in CJ 117 Zumba Gold at Central after work or during lunch: Zumba is a fun-filled dance aerobics class that utilizes Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a dynamic fitness program. * Central Campus on Tuesday, March 17- May 26 from 4:45-5:45 p.m. in OC 300 * Central Campus on Thursday, March 26- April 23 from 12:00-12:40 p.m. in SL 221 If you have any questions, please contact Libby Vagnoni at 4273 or send email to: libby.vagnoni at cpcc.edu -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As more people have become aware of the health risks of smoking and of second-hand smoke, an increasing number of North Carolina citizens support legislation and institutional policies that limit tobacco use in public places. In N.C., there are currently 22 colleges and universities that have implemented policies that restrict or prohibit tobacco use on campus property. CPCC has established a Tobacco-Free Campus Task Force to develop recommendations regarding our tobacco use policy. To inform our efforts, we have created a survey to obtain input from faculty, staff and students. Please take a moment to go to the following URL and complete this brief survey.
