The day begins with an introduction to King's life and lessons. Participating students are then randomly assigned to groups and given a service project at a local organization to complete. Students must work together and utilize problem-solving skills in order to finish their task. At the end of the day, students reassemble to reflect on their accomplishments in a guided discussion. This helps students process all that happened during the day. This event is free and open to the CPCC community only. We provide transportation, breakfast, lunch and dinner. The new Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations make significant changes regarding disclosure of student educational records. This seminar, presented by NACUA in cooperation with EDUCAUSE, will review the most important new provisions and requirements in the regulations. ESS and IT Services have jointly arranged delivery of this on-line seminar in the Tate Hall of the Overcash building, Central campus on Thursday, January 29, 2009 * 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm ET. On December 9 the Department of Education released long-awaited revisions and updates to its regulations implementing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the federal statute governing access to and disclosure of student education records. The new regulations, effective January 9, 2009, make significant changes that necessitate review by institutions of their own student information policies and procedures. This program will review the most important new provisions and requirements in the regulations including those relating to: * Disclosure of Student Information in Campus Health and Safety Emergencies * Disclosure of Student Information to Contractors, including Institutional and Contractor Responsibilities * Information Technology Issues * Access by Institutional Officials to Education Records * Alumni Records, Disclosures to Other Institutions and to State Educational Agencies and Research Organizations * Departmental Enforcement of FERPA Detailed agenda may be viewed at http://www.nacua.org/meetings/VirtualSeminars/january2009/schedule.html Required or recommended changes to institutional policies and practices will be highlighted throughout the program. Please join NACUA members Steve McDonald, Rhode Island School of Design; Margaret (Peg) O'Donnell, The Catholic University; Jonathan Alger, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; and Rodney Petersen, EDUCAUSE; for this program explaining the new regulations and the new compliance obligations (or opportunities to maximize institutional options and flexibility in FERPA compliance) they represent. The program includes two Question and Answer sessions, and attendees will also have the opportunity to pose questions before and after the program. Making up missed class time should be completed in as nonstressful a way as possible for our students. When it comes to make-up options, one size does not fit all because at CPCC the enormous diversity in class locations and restrictions makes for a complex situation. The College position is that within the confines of space limitations, course content, etc. instructors should work with students to provide the maximum number of hours of instruction listed in the class schedule. In some cases, instructors are able to add additional time to other classes; schedule an additional class sometime during the semester; hold conferences with individual students; assign work to be completed online or in the library, etc. For auditing purposes, an instructor must note on the 10% roster the reason a class was not held and what the students did to make up the time. If you have questions, please call Mitchell Hagler, 6576, or Richard Zollinger, 6730. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As I am sure you know, supporting CPCC helps thousands. Every gift to the CPCC Employee Annual Campaign benefits our community and benefits our college. You make a difference. You are important. If you have already given to the CPCC Employee Annual Campaign, thank you very much. If not, I hope you will make your gift online today by clicking here and help someone who needs you, help your campus win the participation trophy, and become eligible to win Employee Campaign donor prizes. Our gifts have important impact in our community. With an 18% increase in enrollment expected this year and budget cuts across the state, it is important that we, the "family," step up and show our support. We set an example for the broader community to follow at a time when we need each other most. Please join me in letting the community know that CPCC is here for them, not only as an outstanding educational resource but also as neighbors helping neighbors. The new Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations make significant changes regarding disclosure of student educational records. This seminar, presented by NACUA in cooperation with EDUCAUSE, will review the most important new provisions and requirements in the regulations. ESS and IT Services have jointly arranged delivery of this online seminar in the Tate Hall of the Overcash building, Central Campus on Thursday, January 29, 2009, from 12 - 2 p.m. ET. Please join NACUA members Steve McDonald, Rhode Island School of Design; Margaret (Peg) O'Donnell, The Catholic University; Jonathan Alger, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; and Rodney Petersen, EDUCAUSE, for this program explaining the new regulations and the new compliance obligations (or opportunities to maximize institutional options and flexibility in FERPA compliance) they represent. The program includes two question and answer sessions, and attendees will also have the opportunity to pose questions before and after the program. A drop-in reception will be held on Thursday, February 24, from 2-4 p.m. in the Overcash Lobby on Central Campus. So many of us have had the privilege of working with Mitchell and appreciate and value his dedication, integrity, and vast expertise. Mitchell has made valuable contributions to the College, starting as an instructor in the English department in 1960. He played a major role in the SACS reaccreditation process, led the annual updates of the College catalog, organized innumerable graduation ceremonies, volunteered every year for the Skyline Run, and served on committees too numerous to name. However, the true significance of our friend Mitchell is in all the small kindnesses and considerations he quietly bestows on a daily basis. He is the consummate gentleman of CPCC. Please drop by to wish him well; and if you cannot attend but would like to send a note or letter of appreciation and best wishes, you may direct them to the attention of Patricia Williams in the Learning unit. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
