in search of information table volunteers. These important volunteers
work to greet students who might be lost, need to know classroom
locations, or just need answers to very general, first-week questions.
Please spare an hour or two the first few days of classes to help your
colleagues welcome our students.

Think of all the ways you could spend one hour of your day. If you took
that time to donate blood, you might save three people. Is there truly a
better use of 60 minutes?
Please give back at the Central Campus Blood Drive on Wednesday, January
14, from 9:00 a.m.-1:30 p.m.
You may schedule your donation appointment online.
You
will be prompted to enter a sponsor code in order to view our upcoming
blood drives. The sponsor code for CPCC is 1554.
Walk-ins are welcome, but space is limited. Please bring a photo ID and
be sure to eat breakfast to ensure appropriate iron levels in your
blood!
Not sure if you can donate? Please contact Cassie Moore at 6824.

The MLK Challenge on January 19, 2009, is an annual Service-Learning
Center event that celebrates the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. The day incorporates an educational kick-off, service projects,
and a reflection wrap-up. The day begins with an introduction to King's
life and lessons. Participating students are then randomly assigned to
groups and given a service project at a local organization to complete.
Students must work together and utilize problem-solving skills in order
to finish their task.
At the end of the day, students reassemble to reflect on their
accomplishments in a guided discussion. This helps students process all
that happened during the day. This event is free and open to the CPCC
community only.
We provide transportation, breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Participants are asked to dress appropriately.
Registration begins 8:00 a.m. the day of the event in the Student
Commons area of the Overcash Center.

It may be winter outside now, but plans are already being made for the
5K Charlotte Skyline Run/Walk on Saturday, April 25, 2009. The committee
is hard at work to help make this year's event raise more money for the
CPCC Foundation, with much of the money going to student scholarships.
This 14th annual fundraiser will bring over 1,000 visitors to the
Central Campus, and we need lots of volunteers to make sure the
race/walk goes off without a hitch.
All volunteers get a race T-shirt designed by Advertising and Graphic
Design student Juliana Lievano.
Please contact Patricia Williams at patricia.williams at cpcc.edu or
704-330-6518 and let us know where you would like to help. We will need
most volunteers here by 7:30 a.m. and most duties will be over by 10:30
a.m. We are in special need of intersection monitors and monitors during
the Kids' Race to make sure that cars allow runners/walkers to pass
safely.

Colleges and Universities Seminar
Message-ID: <86ADE8E8E85BEF4DA54163FE349B517B0125748445E0@X7S3-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
Faculty or staff with significant access to or responsibility for oversight of student education records are encouraged to attend this FREPA seminar. The new Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations make significant changes regarding disclosure of student educational records. This seminar, presented by NACUA in cooperation with EDUCAUSE, will review the most important new provisions and requirements in the regulations.
ESS and IT Services have jointly arranged delivery of this on-line seminar in the Tate Hall of the Overcash building, Central campus on Thursday, January 29, 2009 * 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm ET.
On December 9 the Department of Education released long-awaited revisions and updates to its regulations implementing the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the federal statute governing access to and disclosure of student education records. The new regulations, effective January 9, 2009, make significant changes that necessitate review by institutions of their own student information policies and procedures.
This program will review the most important new provisions and requirements in the regulations including those relating to:
* Disclosure of Student Information in Campus Health and Safety Emergencies
* Disclosure of Student Information to Contractors, including Institutional and Contractor Responsibilities
* Information Technology Issues
* Access by Institutional Officials to Education Records
* Alumni Records, Disclosures to Other Institutions and to State Educational Agencies and Research Organizations
* Departmental Enforcement of FERPA
Detailed agenda may be viewed at http://www.nacua.org/meetings/VirtualSeminars/january2009/schedule.html
Required or recommended changes to institutional policies and practices will be highlighted throughout the program. Please join NACUA members Steve McDonald, Rhode Island School of Design; Margaret (Peg) O'Donnell, The Catholic University; Jonathan Alger, Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey; and Rodney Petersen, EDUCAUSE; for this program explaining the new regulations and the new compliance obligations (or opportunities to maximize institutional options and flexibility in FERPA compliance) they represent. The program includes two Question and Answer sessions, and attendees will also have the opportunity to pose questions before and after the program.

Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE6972A1@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Mitchell Hagler
With yesterday's closing because of inclement weather, faculty are
reminded that they are obligated to make every effort to make up the
time missed.
Making up missed class time should be completed in as nonstressful a way
as possible for our students. When it comes to make-up options, one size
does not fit all because at CPCC the enormous diversity in class
locations and restrictions makes for a complex situation.
The College position is that within the confines of space limitations,
course content, etc. instructors should work with students to provide
the maximum number of hours of instruction listed in the class schedule.
In some cases, instructors are able to add additional time to other
classes; schedule an additional class sometime during the semester; hold
conferences with individual students; assign work to be completed online
or in the library, etc.
For auditing purposes, an instructor must note on the 10% roster the
reason a class was not held and what the students did to make up the
time.
If you have questions, please call Mitchell Hagler, 6576, or Richard
Zollinger, 6730.

Instructors using the new web-based attendance system to record
attendance must mark each individual student's attendance for Tuesday,
January 20, with an "X" indicating the class was canceled.
1. Click on 1/20 Class.
2. Use the drop down box, click "X" canceled for each student.
When you are finished, check the certification box and then click

In the near future, for auditing purposes, you must Post a Comment
stating the reason the class was not held and what the students will do
to make up the time.
Remember that the typed note cannot be changed once entered. *
Refer to Mitchell Hagler's Advisory Broadcast email regarding College

For about 380 classes, the 10% date occurred on the day the College was
closed due to inclement weather.
For this reason, ITS will move the 10% date (in the online attendance
record and in hard copy) one day forward to the next meeting date of the
class.
This date change will also be reflected in Datatel.

If you create non-instructional contracts (FCMD) in Colleague, please be
advised, the print function (XPTC) is operational. It is no longer
necessary to submit screen prints.
If you have already submitted signed screen prints it is NOT necessary
to resubmit.
Please begin using XPTC to print the non-instructional contracts and
should you encounter problems, call ext. 6476 or 6538 for assistance.
When you print the contract, remember to enter "No" in the "Print
Instructional Contracts" field and enter "Yes" in the "Print
Non-Instructional Contracts" field. See the example below.

>From Reade Baker
Dear Colleagues:
You don't have to be rich to be a philanthropist; you just need to give
what you can to help. As I am sure you know, supporting CPCC helps
thousands.
Every gift to the CPCC Employee Annual Campaign benefits our community
and benefits our college. You make a difference. You are important.
If you have already given to the CPCC Employee Annual Campaign, thank
you very much. If not, I hope you will make your gift online today by
clicking here and
help someone who needs you, help your campus win the participation
trophy, and become eligible to win Employee Campaign donor prizes.
Our gifts have important impact in our community. With an 18% increase
in enrollment expected this year and budget cuts across the state, it is
important that we, the "family," step up and show our support. We set an
example for the broader community to follow at a time when we need each
other most.
Please join me in letting the community know that CPCC is here for them,
not only as an outstanding educational resource but also as neighbors
helping neighbors.
Sincerely,
Reade Baker

regulations make significant changes regarding disclosure of student
educational records. This seminar, presented by NACUA in cooperation
with EDUCAUSE, will review the most important new provisions and
requirements in the regulations.
ESS and IT Services have jointly arranged delivery of this online
seminar in the Tate Hall of the Overcash building, Central Campus on
Thursday, January 29, 2009, from 12 - 2 p.m. ET.
On December 9 the Department of Education released long-awaited
revisions and updates to its regulations implementing the Family
Educational Rights and Privacy Act, the federal statute governing access
to and disclosure of student education records. The new regulations,
effective January 9, 2009, make significant changes that necessitate
review by institutions of their own student information policies and
procedures.
This program will review the most important new provisions and
requirements in the regulations including those relating to:
* Disclosure of student information in campus health and safety
emergencies
* Disclosure of student information to contractors, including
institutional and contractor responsibilities
* Information technology issues
* Access by institutional officials to education records
* Alumni records, disclosures to other institutions and to state
educational agencies and research organizations
* Departmental enforcement of FERPA
Detailed agenda may be viewed at
http://www.nacua.org/meetings/VirtualSeminars/january2009/schedule.html
Required or recommended changes to institutional policies and practices
will be highlighted throughout the program. Please join NACUA members
Steve McDonald, Rhode Island School of Design; Margaret (Peg) O'Donnell,
The Catholic University; Jonathan Alger, Rutgers, the State University
of New Jersey; and Rodney Petersen, EDUCAUSE, for this program
explaining the new regulations and the new compliance obligations (or
opportunities to maximize institutional options and flexibility in FERPA
compliance) they represent.
The program includes two question and answer sessions, and attendees
will also have the opportunity to pose questions before and after the
program.

>From Patricia Williams
The Learning Unit invites you to join us in honoring Mitchell Hagler and
thanking him for his 50 plus years in education. A drop-in reception
will be held on Thursday, February 24, from 2-4 p.m. in the Overcash
Lobby on Central Campus.
So many of us have had the privilege of working with Mitchell and
appreciate and value his dedication, integrity, and vast expertise.
Mitchell has made valuable contributions to the College, starting as an
instructor in the English department in 1960. He played a major role in
the SACS reaccreditation process, led the annual updates of the College
catalog, organized innumerable graduation ceremonies, volunteered every
year for the Skyline Run, and served on committees too numerous to name.
However, the true significance of our friend Mitchell is in all the
small kindnesses and considerations he quietly bestows on a daily basis.
He is the consummate gentleman of CPCC.
Please drop by to wish him well; and if you cannot attend but would like
to send a note or letter of appreciation and best wishes, you may direct
them to the attention of Patricia Williams in the Learning unit.
