In order to provide excellent customer service, we provide Outlook "Out
of Office" notices when Payroll staff are not available to accept
emails, scanned documents, and phone messages. When payroll forms are
scanned directly to a staff member through the MFP printer/scanner, you
will not receive the messages.
You can be sure we receive your payroll forms if you first scan the
document to your email address and then forward it to Payroll staff. If
a team member is not available, you will then receive the message and be
re-directed to another staff member who is able to assist you.
We are committed to processing your payroll accurately and timely and
want to make sure we receive your timesheets and payroll forms in time
for payroll processing.
Thank you for your cooperation.

Kickboxing is the ultimate cardiovascular challenge! It's an addictive
workout that combines shadow boxing, kickboxing, sports drills, dancing,
yoga, and simple dance moves in a party atmosphere. Regardless of your
fitness level, you CAN (and should!) participate. The beauty of
kickboxing is that it's rooted in athletics; it's repetitious and, most
importantly, it's user friendly. The classes will tailor to meet
employees' fitness levels.
If you have any questions, contact Lynne Kilgore, Marketing Services, at

wear comfortable clothing.

Please join us today at 11:30 a.m. for the first of two special
presentations and discussions on social entrepreneurship. Snacks will be
provided courtesy of the Family Resource Center.
Through a grant funded by FRONTLINE/World and the American Library
Association (ALA), the Library, in partnership with the Business and
Accounting Division, SIFE and the Institute for Entrepreneurship, will
host a film viewing and lecture/discussion program:
* Wednesday, September 10, 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m., Central
Campus, PD 304.
Film viewing and discussion of "Uganda: A Little Goes a Long Way" - This
short film shows how a San Francisco-based nonprofit called Kiva.org is
revolutionizing the world of micro-credit.
"South Africa: The Play Pump" - This film focuses on social entrepreneur
Trevor Field and his Play Pump water project in South Africa to provide
clean water to poor communities: a school yard merry-go-round that
powers clean water.
Note: these are two of 16 in documentary series.
* Wednesday, September 17, 6:00 p.m., Central Campus, PD304.
Public lecture/forum - "Passing on the Gift: Social Entrepreneurship"
with guest speakers Alex and Ann Smythers of Heifer International.
The goal of the FRONTLINE/World Social Entrepreneurs Film Program is to
engage the general public, students and professionals in a discussion
with leaders in business, humanitarian aid, academia and/or social
activism on the concept of social entrepreneurship as a way to create
meaningful solutions to social problems in developing countries, in
contemporary society and in our local communities.
FRONTLINE/World is the award-winning PBS international news magazine
that turns its lens on the global community, covering countries and
cultures rarely seen on American television. The special Social
Entrepreneurs Series features the stories of people whose ideas and
organizations create new and sustainable markets and services that
benefit underserved communities everywhere in the developing world.
Entrepreneurs change the face of business; social entrepreneurs change
society by creating solutions to social problems that leap beyond
charity and encourage the development of systematic solutions that help
eradicate poverty, enhance educational opportunities, provide better
health care and champion social justice.

All the old Imagistics copiers on all campuses should be gone now except
for student machines requiring a copy card or coins.
However, if that's not the case, and you know of one of these old
machines in your area, please email Campus Printing at
campusprinting at cpcc.edu and let us know about it. We'll have it picked
up as soon as possible.

Subject: [Cpcommunicator] News Concerning AIG Retirement (Formerly VALIC)
Message-ID:
>From Kim Heffernan
Recent developments in the U.S. financial markets have been truly
extraordinary. VALIC's parent, AIG, has gotten a lot of media attention
in regards to its position in the current environment.
We have information from VALIC for employees currently participating or
considering participation in the VALIC's 403(b) :
Is My Money Safe?
1. Yes. VALIC is financially strong with $3.4 billion in adjusted
capital and surplus as of 6/30/08. VALIC's capital and surplus are
completely separate from our ultimate parent, AIG.
2. FIXED: VALIC client assets in the guaranteed fixed investment
options are protected by Texas state insurance regulations. The fixed
options provide fixed rate earnings and a guarantee of principal. This
guarantee is backed by the "general account" of VALIC, which supports
only the obligations of VALIC, not any obligations of AIG.
3. VARIABLE: Client assets in the variable account options, which
include variable annuities and mutual funds, are invested in mutual
funds regulated by the SEC. A mutual fund's assets are owned by its
shareholders and managed by a professional portfolio manager; thus, such
funds are not affected by business actions involving AIG or AIG
Retirement.
a. Further, Texas state law requires insurance company separate
accounts to be held apart from the rest of the company assets.
Therefore, the separate account assets in these mutual funds are held
for the exclusive benefit of the clients and their beneficiaries. This
insulation provides safety for each client, and ensures that the account
is not subject to claims from any person or entity other than a contract
owner, plan participant or beneficiary.
b. This also means that client investment returns depend on the
performance of the individual investment funds the client selected and
not on the performance of AIG or AIG Retirement.
For further information on VALIC, please go to www.aigretirement.com or
contact your VALIC representative, Marschon Blackwell, at 800-892-5558.

Message-ID:
>From Library Services
Please join us tomorrow, Wednesday, September 17 at 6:00 pm for a
special presentation and discussion on social entrepreneurship. Snacks
will be provided courtesy of the Family Resource Center.
Student participation is highly encouraged!
Through a grant funded by FRONTLINE/World and the American Library
Association (ALA), the Library, in partnership with the Business and
Accounting Division, SIFE and the Institute for Entrepreneurship, will
host a lecture/discussion program:
* Wednesday, September 17, 6:00 p.m., Central Campus, PD304.
Public lecture/forum - "Passing on the Gift: Social Entrepreneurship"
with guest speakers Alex and Ann Smythers of Heifer International.
"Passing on the gift" is fundamental to Heifer's entire approach. Heifer
International works with communities around the world to end hunger and
poverty and to care for the earth. Since 1944, Heifer has helped 9.2
million families in 125 countries move toward greater self-reliance
through livestock, training and "passing on the gift." By providing
animals and training, Heifer enables families to overcome poverty and
make lasting improvements in their quality of life. Heifer's Program
Information Services offers technical literature for field workers and
planners that focuses on sustainable approaches to development;
small-scale farming; animal husbandry; and planning, monitoring and
evaluation techniques.
Speaker biographical sketch;
Ann and Alex Smythers became involved with Heifer International in 1974
through their church in western New York, but it wasn't until they took
a mission and study trip to Honduras with Heifer in 2000 that they
became really passionate about it. The first hand meetings with the
people running the projects and meeting the people receiving gift
animals and training really transformed their lives. Since then, they
have both retired from their self employed jobs, Alex as a computer
consultant and Ann as a CPA to make "social engineering" an effective
mission of their church and of the Charlotte Hiefer Volunteer
organization. In addition to their work for Heifer, they are Co-chairs
of the Latino Ministries Committee for the Charlotte District of the
United Methodist Church, members of the Western North Carolina Latino
Ministries Committee, and on the Board of Directors of the Peace and
Justice organization of the United Methodist Church. They have visited
Honduras, Guatemala and Costa Rica, worked with the Latin American
Coalition, and their church, Blair Road United Methodist Church in Mint
Hill has provided animals to make 10,000 individuals self sufficient.
They are familiar with animal gifts, community organization, community
gardens, micro-credit, and fund raisers. They speak frequently at
churches and community organizations.

We have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that our new
LearnerWeb site is now up and available. The bad news is that it is not
completely functional, i.e. not all of the scheduled classes appear on
our calendar of events. Also, you can't register for classes in
LearnerWeb. Please check the below schedule and simply show-up for the
classes you wish to attend. We hope to have everything working properly
by tomorrow afternoon.
We encourage employees to attend one of our classes entitled, "What is
New with LearnerWeb," to learn how to navigate through the new version.
Tomorrow afternoon you should be able to view the complete schedule and
register for one of these classes on the campus most convenient to you.
We thank you in advance for your patience during this transition.

>From Karen Streppa:

Subject: [Cpcommunicator] Update on pension fund from Treasurer Moore
Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE696C3F@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Human Resources
The following message from State Treasurer Richard Moore provides an
update on the pension fund in light of continuing financial market
problems.
A message from Treasurer Richard Moore
With the stream of bad news about Wall Street and the financial sector,
pension fund members have been concerned about our investments. I want
you to know that I am carefully monitoring the unfolding situation in
the market, as is our team of investment experts. While recent
developments are serious for all investors, the pension fund is
conservatively invested and diversified in order to protect members'
benefits over the long haul.
As of June 30th, the companies being watched most carefully made up
about 0.3 percent of the pension fund. Many of our holdings in those
companies have decreased, some dramatically, since that time. That
shows that our managers have seen the problems coming and responded
appropriately.
Our insistence on being diversified, within our stock portfolio and
across different kinds of investments, is more important now than ever.
While the stock market, and especially financial sector stocks, have
been volatile, many of the fund's other investments are doing well. The
fund's bonds, alternative investments and real estate holdings continue
to perform well and provide support to the pension fund. In our stock
and bond portfolios, we have remained committed to high quality
investments, something that continues to pay off.
I want to reassure members of our pension fund that your fund is
structured to weather market downturns and shifts. That is why we
carefully invest the pension fund and responsibly manage the retirement
systems.

Message-ID:
>From Jerri Haigler
Student Park Deck 1 and Faculty Deck Impacted by Construction Beginning
September 22
Over the next few months, students and faculty on Central Campus will
notice some changes and traffic delays as a result of construction to
Student Parking Deck 1 and the Employee/Theater Parking Deck. Students
and employees can anticipate traffic delays and a decrease in the number
of parking spaces in these two lots periodically.
During the construction, the ground level of parking in the employee
parking deck will be closed at times. In addition, the entrance from
Charlottetowne Avenue to the Student Parking Deck 1 will be closed at
times, thus requiring students to enter from 4th street. Motorcycles
parking in Student Deck 1 will notice directional signs and barricades
for parking during the construction.
These changes will take place beginning September 22. Watch CPCC Today
and the CPCC website for more details.

Project Vote! Be Informed!
This fall, Student Life and Service-Learning have joined with Generation
Engage and Democracy NC for Project Vote!, a series of events designed
to get students engaged in the political process and excited about
casting their vote in this year's election.
We hope that you and your students will join us for the Project Vote!
Festival on Wednesday, September 24, 10am-2pm on the Central Campus
Green. We have invited a wide array of community organizations,
political parties, and non-partisan groups to talk with students and
share information. Students may also register to vote with the
Mecklenburg County Board of Elections & League of Women Voters, use
sample voting machines, and determine their correct precincts.
The event will feature music, poetry, and a DJ, and FREE PIZZA* for
those students who participate and visit at least 5 different booths
(*while it lasts!).
This event is an excellent opportunity for your students to hear from
local groups who have a stake in the coming election and is a great
chance to get involved!

To learn more about domestic violence in our community, take a moment to

During the month of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month,
the silhouettes will travel to area campus in conjunction with programs
sponsored by Student Life and the Counseling Services. Check the Student
