As a result of this, almost everyone knows the impact that a life threatening disease or cancer can have. Breast cancer is one of many cancers for which researchers are working to find a cure. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 2.4 million women and men have had or currently have breast cancer. In 2007 alone it was estimated that approximately 40,460 women and 450 men would die of breast cancer. Today as a result of enhanced treatments and technologies, surviving breast cancer is a very realistic expectation, but for the millions of people affected by breast cancer there is far more research to complete. Creating a heightened awareness of the potential for a cure or prevention of breast cancer, October has become Breast Cancer Awareness Month in the U.S. as well as Canada. The CPCC Majors Bookstore is showing its support for creating breast cancer awareness through providing products with a pink twist. A portion of the sales for each item goes to various cancer research centers throughout the country. Items include pink stationery, writing instruments, and even pink ribbon Tic Tacs! Stop by and see our breast cancer awareness display through October. Thank you. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As a prelude to the Charlotte Symphony's presentation of Leonard Bernstein's symphonic suite from On The Waterfront,* Alan Yamamoto, resident conductor of the symphony, has made himself available for a very special symposium on October 23 at 4:00 p.m. in Tate Hall, located on the second floor of the Overcash Center on Central Campus. This event is in anticipation of a unique and exciting multimedia concert. On November 14 at Halton Theater, Mr. Yamamoto and the Charlotte Symphony will perform the symphonic suite from On the Waterfront live, accompanying a screening of a re-edited film montage from the Elia Kazan film by CPCC's own Philip Broome and George Cochran. The October 23 symposium will explore the CPCC film/video program's contribution to this multimedia experience, demonstrating the power of the music track as it supports both the original motion picture and the Broome/Cochran film creation, as well as the cultural and political implications that impacted Elia Kazan's Academy Award-winning film (1954). What a very special opportunity to be a part of a presentation that supports multiple curricula here at CPCC--a look at music, politics, and film! Come experience the behind-the-scenes efforts of two creative resources as they support cinematic and musical excellence and their ability to stimulate the audience! * Please reserve both dates on your calendars: October 23 for the class (4:00 p.m. at Tate Hall) and November 14 (8:00 p.m. at the Halton Theater) for the On the Waterfront multimedia experience. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Come work-out, have fun and enjoy the music. Debbie Bright, Health and Education, will be the instructor. Wednesday at Harris from 1:30-2:30 p.m. in HA 1236 Contact Van Branch for more information. Zumba Dance Fitness at North Zumba combines high energy and motivating music with unique moves and combinations that allow the Zumba participants to dance their way to fitness. A certified personal trainer from Huntersville Family Fitness & Aquatics will lead the class. Tuesday at North Campus from 4:00-5:00 p.m. in CJ117. Turbo Kick(r) at Central Kickboxing is the ultimate cardiovascular challenge! It's an addictive workout that combines shadow boxing, kickboxing, sports drills, dancing, yoga, and simple dance moves in a party atmosphere. The single best way for students to save money on textbooks is through buying used books. Your CPCC Bookstores buy text back every day...in fact we offer up to 50% back on textbooks after students are done with them! The CPCC Bookstores offer the most at buyback so that we can have the largest selection of used books for our students next semester. Buyback benefits the student who sells a book; the student who can then purchase that book used, and even the environment through recycling! Please turn in textbook adoptions as soon as possible (by October 15) and encourage students to sell back books! -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... CPCC has partnered with Higher One, Inc., a financial services company focused solely on higher education, to bring this new method of refund disbursement to campus. Founded in 2000, Higher One provides higher education institutions and their students with efficient, convenient, and easy-to-use solutions to handle financial disbursements. The new CPCC debit card will provide our students with increased choice when it comes to receiving their financial aid or school refunds, including the preferred "Easy Refund" method-the fastest and easiest way for students to gain access to their refund money-literally the same day CPCC releases it. This option does require students to open the OneAccount, an FDIC insured student checking account offered to all students by Higher One. They may also choose to have their refund credited to their current banking account. What students need to do: The new CPCC debit card will be mailed to each student's current address on file with the College. Therefore, it is important that all students verify and update their mailing address as soon as possible. We now offer students (and employees) the option to update their address online through MyCollege! We are very excited about this opportunity to provide CPCC students faster service and increased choices for receiving their refunds. Please join us in welcoming this exciting new service to our College. Have additional questions? Visit www.cpccdebitcard.com or higherone.com to learn more about the all-new CPCC debit card coming to the College in spring 2009. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Central Piedmont Community College has consistently enjoyed the support of its community because of our longstanding responsible stewardship of their resources, and we are determined to maintain this reputation. The governor has already asked for a 2% reversion of our budget and may soon ask for another 1-2%. It is our collective challenge to continue to serve our students despite additional reversions and increasing enrollments. In order to be proactive and best positioned to face budget constraints, the College Cabinet is examining all current job vacancies. Only those vacancies identified as "mission critical" will be approved at this time. In 2002 we faced a similar budget challenge and we benefited from the input of our faculty and staff. I am again asking for everyone's help as we face budget challenges. Though not exactly surprising due to the current economy, the current need among our own CPCC family is astounding...and the nominations continue to come in. We are accepting nominations through November 14, 2008. It is our intention as the Classified Staff to assist every nominated family. However, we need help from the CPCC family as a whole in this endeavor. Hopefully, you are now asking "How can I help?" We have several ways in which you can support your fellow CPCC family. All donations should be delivered by Friday, November 21, 2008. Please consider: * Purchasing some items for the collection boxes (located on every campus) during your weekly shopping * Adopt a family as a department or committee (contact Teraisa Tucker, 4393, for more information) * Volunteer your time to help a family with specific needs (confidentiality will be kept intact for each nominated family; contact Teraisa Tucker, 4393, for more information) The Classified Staff wishes to thank everyone for their support in fostering hope for our fellow CPCC family members. We hope to continue this as an annual tradition as we all face challenging economic times together. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
