Subject: [Cpcommunicator] WINGS Scholarship opportunity for women
Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE377862@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Shane Jeter
The WINGS Scholarship--Women Initiating and Nurturing Growth Through
Scholarships--is a scholarship program for women at Charlotte-area
colleges and universities, women who are 25 or older who need help
overcoming the obstacles that stand in the way of achieving their goals.
A woman who receives a WINGS scholarship has a clear educational and
career plan; she has proven her ability to accomplish not only academic
work but also to do well in other facets of life. Her own personal
vision is so strong that people cannot help but want to support her in
it.
The WINGS Scholarship provides financial support but also offers
something potentially even more valuable. Two or more seasoned, active,
executive or professional women chosen for the specific expertise they
can bring to the recipient's plan for herself are assigned as mentors to
every WINGS recipient. What these mentors give is their own experience,
perspectives, counsel, networks, and personal support - what they give
is themselves. Throughout the year, recipients meet with their mentors,
and attendance is required at the WINGS scholarship luncheon which
honors the recipients and graduates.
Eligible applicants will be considered who...
* Have a clear sense for what they want to achieve through education
and a plan for doing it.
* Have successfully completed some post-high school studies with a
grade-point average of 2.5 whether they are currently enrolled or not.
* Have shown not only in their studies but also in other ways that they
are serious about their personal and career goals.
* Are U.S. citizens
* Are at least 25 years old.
* Meet eligibility criteria to receive financial aid
* Are the major source of financial support for themselves and/or their
children, or need retraining in order to achieve higher earnings or
greater financial security.
If you are interested in applying for this wonderful scholarship
opportunity for the upcoming 2008-2009 school year, please come by the
Financial Aid office (Central High Building, Room 206) to pick up a
scholarship application.
All applications received by April 18 (application deadline) will be
considered.

Subject: [Cpcommunicator] Employee volunteers needed 3/13 for mock crisis
drill on Harper
Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE377867@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Jerri Haigler
On Thursday, March 13, CPCC will partner with the City Emergency
Responders Planning Group to conduct a mock crisis drill on the Harper
Campus. The purpose of the event is to provide the College with an
opportunity to role play a "real-life" crisis event and to test our
emergency preparedness and crisis communications plans.
Please note, due to security reasons, the Harper Campus will not be open
to the public that day. Only those signed up to assist with the drill
will be allowed on campus.
The drill will be held during Spring Break; therefore, we are in need of
more than 200 volunteers to assist with this effort. Volunteers should
report to the Harper Campus at 8:00 a.m. for breakfast and an
orientation session. Volunteers will learn more about the crisis
situation and receive their assignment at that time.
The mock crisis drill will be completed by no later than 1:00 p.m.
Volunteers should plan to dress for an indoor or outdoor volunteer role.
Volunteers are eligible for three hours of professional development
credit. Anyone interested can sign up through LearnerWeb
.
For more information, contact Kathy Watkins at 704.330.6299.
Please note, anyone volunteering must have a CPCC photo ID card. Photo
ID cards can be made at any campus from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

Professional Development Workshop entitled "Energizing Innovative
Brains: Tools for Creative Thinking" (presented by Jonathan Vehar)
Everyone is creative. It's part of the human condition. Yet bringing out
creativity and putting it to work productively in a group setting can be
a challenge. This is a dynamic, interactive presentation designed to
look at the blocks and barriers that get in the way of teams working
together effectively. This workshop will focus on strategies for
engaging everyone to participate, not just the boisterous, the
extroverts, or the loudest. By looking at a set of ground rules for
working together, initiatives to help demonstrate good teamwork and
tools and techniques to help students collaborate effectively, you'll
walk away with more strategies and tactics to integrate teamwork in the
classroom.

Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE377887@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Pat Emch
To update and clarify: Effective March 3, 2008, Office Depot removed
numerous restricted (non-contract) and formerly visible items from the
term contract and the online catalog.
Office Depot is the exclusive office supplies vendor for term contract
615A. However, products not listed or covered by the contract may be
purchased from best available sources including CPCC's new secondary
Office Depot account #47751820 by calling national customer service at
800.419.4624.
The contract indicates a minimum order of $100.00 for any single order;
Office Depot itself does not impose this minimum order. CPCC is
authorized to purchase from best available sources on orders less than
this minimum order value. This provision shall not be used by an agency
to circumvent the intent of the contract.
Understanding that Office Depot incurs costs each time a delivery is
made, users are encouraged to manage their office supplies purchases and
order at least $100.00 minimum whenever possible. If you have an urgent
requirement and elect to place an order for less than the minimum order
value, transportation charges will not be charged by Office Depot.
To view current pricing on all of Office Depot's state contract items,
visit http://www.doa.state.nc.us/PandC/numlistt.asp (click on 615A),
open contract. Scroll to Page 5, Item D, and double click on the PDF
link (View Pricing in Schedule format (PDF file). Check your
invoice/statement to verify state contract pricing. Report any
discrepancies to CPCC's Office Depot representative, Steven Tarlowe, at
704.678.8360 for correction.
Procurement will announce an important special class "Office Supply
Contract Training."

freight charges
Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE37788C@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Marie Helms
Commodity codes:
Users should make sure to enter the appropriate commodity code when
adding a non-catalog line item in E-Procurement. When purchasing goods,
users should select a non-900 commodity code. When purchasing services,
users should select a 900 commodity code. If a requisition contains both
goods and services, these line items should be separated and marked
accordingly.
For non-catalog items, users can search for a commodity code in
E-Procurement by typing in the commodity code or the item description.
Commodity Codes can also be found on P&C's webpage
(http://www.ncpandc.gov/nigpcode.htm).
Entering freight charges:
The E-Procurement transaction fee is not assessed on freight. Unless
your entity's policies indicate otherwise, users should enter freight
charges in E-Procurement as a separate non-catalog line item. Freight
line items should be assigned the freight commodity code - 962-86
Transportation of Goods (Freight).
Please contact your buyer if you need assistance.

>From Employee Campaign Campus Captains
Dear Colleagues:
You should have recently received information by mail about the CPCC
Employee Annual Campaign. We want to thank you in advance for
considering a gift. We are pleased that in addition to Unrestricted,
Scholarship, Faculty, and General Program support, you can now designate
your gift to a specific program or campus.
As employees, our daily commitment to the College's mission and goals
make CPCC the outstanding educational resource that it is for our
community. Another important way to demonstrate our commitment to CPCC
is through our financial support. As the College's enrollment continues
to grow, we faculty and staff know better than anyone the need for
additional financial resources. Please join us in making a gift to CPCC;
by doing so, you will help change lives, and you will send a powerful
message to our entire community-that CPCC is indeed deserving of
everyone's support.
You can make your gift online or download the brochure at 2008 Employee
Campaign .
Sincerely,
Employee Campaign Campus Captains
Mark Helms - Central Campus

>From the Advising Management Team
Midterm Progress Reports should be posted during the dates of March 17
through March 20.
These reports inform students of unsatisfactory progress toward course
completion and should be submitted only for students who are not
performing satisfactorily. Students who receive Midterm Progress Reports
will receive an email notification encouraging them to contact
instructor(s) to discuss their progress.
Faculty are encouraged to inform their classes about Midterm Progress
Reports and advise students to check their CPCC email accounts.
To post Midterm Reports:
* From the Web Employee Main Menu, select the "Faculty" link.
* On the WebAdvisor for Faculty Menu, select the "Grading" link.
* From the drop down menu, select the desired term (spring
2008).
* Click on submit.
* From the drop down menu on the Grading screen, select
* "Midterm/Intermediate" grading first! (Hint: move your
cursor and click outside of that box. Otherwise, when you scroll down,
you may change your selection from "Midterm" to "Final" grading. )
* Select class section; select "Submit"
* IMPORTANT - Check at the top of the class list. Be sure that
it still says "Midterm Grading" (If the screen reads "Final Grades" go
back to the previous screen to select "Midterm/Intermediate Grading.")
* Enter "MID" for students who should receive Midterm Progress
Report. Do not enter any other grades!
* When all "MID" grades have been entered, select "Submit" at
the bottom of the screen.
* Once "MID" grades have been submitted, revisions may continue
until the end of the reporting period.
Contact your Advisement Management Team coordinator with any questions
regarding Midterm Progress Reports.

>From Mandy Saunders, Counseling Services
Much to our dismay, the nation continues to experience a series of
senseless acts perpetrated upon innocent victims and unsuspecting groups
of individuals engaging in daily routines. We continue to hear of
perplexing events very close to home also - across the state, in the
city of Charlotte and, even here at the College.
This is simply an ongoing reminder that student counselors are here to
assist students if they were to need someone to talk to about these or
other concerns.
As needed, please refer students to any of the following counseling
offices for assistance:
Central Campus - Central High Building, room 212 - 704-330-6433 or

Introducing MS Office 2007
When you use any function of Microsoft Office 2007, you'll see a lots
that's familiar, such as your Word document or Excel worksheet. But
you'll also notice a new look at the top of the window.
The old look with menus and toolbars has been replaced by the Ribbon at
the top of the window. The Ribbon contains tabs that you click to get to
the commands you already know how to use.
The Ribbon is just one of the tools to make it easier for you to
organize and analyze information using MS Office 2007.
ITS and Professional Development have teamed up to offer introductory
classes to MS Office 2007 at all campuses. Register in LearnerWeb
for the next convenient class.
For further information, check out the ITS MS Office 2007 project page
at http://www1.cpcc.edu/its/faculty-staff/office-2007.
For support with this or any other IT service, contact the ITS Help Desk
at 5000.

Please note that volunteers are still needed to assist with the mock
drill. Today (March 11) is the last day to sign up through LearnerWeb
. Volunteers who have registered through
LearnerWeb should report to the Harper Campus at 8:00 a.m. for breakfast
and an orientation session. Volunteers will learn more about the crisis
situation and receive their assignment at that time.
Please note, due to security reasons, the Harper Campus will not be open
to the public that day. Only those signed up to assist with the drill
will be allowed on campus. The Harper Campus will re-open at 4:00 p.m.
on March 13.
The mock crisis drill will be completed by no later than 1:00 p.m.
Volunteers should plan to dress for an indoor or outdoor volunteer role.
For more information, contact Kathy Watkins at 704.330.6299.
Please note, anyone volunteering must have a CPCC photo ID card. Photo
ID cards can be made at any campus from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

>From Jerri Haigler
Yesterday, CPCC, in conjunction with the City Emergency Responders
Planning Group, conducted a mock crisis drill at CPCC's Harper Campus.
The event was scheduled to better prepare for possible threats to campus
security and to test the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Public Safety Plan.
The live exercise involved staff and student volunteers in a simulated
incident. In addition to CPCC, the exercise involved other public safety
agencies including the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department,
Charlotte Fire Department, Medic, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency
Management, and Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
The mock incident involved various scenarios, including role playing of
an active shooter, an explosion, gunfire, and injuries. Following the
mock incident, CPCC participated in a debriefing session to discuss ways
to strengthen the All Hazards Emergency Response Plan and the College's
crisis communications plan.
The mock drill allowed the College to test communication vehicles such
as email to all students and staff, text messaging to a core group of
staff, an alert button on the CPCC homepage, messaging on CPCC TV,
information at the CPCC Call Center, and the recorded message on our
emergency phone line at 704.330.6888.
CPCC will use the information learned from this mock drill to enhance
the overall crisis plan for the College. Many thanks to all who played a
part in this effort.

Manage Your Mailbox: Find Its Size and Trim It Down
If your goal is to reduce the overall size of your mailbox or of a
specific folder in your mailbox, one strategy is to read and respond to
messages, and then file or delete them based on their size. To achieve
this goal, you can use Outlook to monitor individual message sizes. For
example, you can sort your messages so that they appear in order from
largest to smallest.
If you want to know the exact size of each of the large messages in your
mailbox, you can see them by displaying the message in Table View. After
you find big messages, you can then decide whether they're worth keeping
(considering their size).
For options other than deleting, please see CPCC's MS Office 2007 page

Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE377936@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Amy Bruining
Plans are underway for graduation ceremonies on Tuesday, May 13, 2008,
at Cricket Arena, 2700 East Independence Boulevard. The Adult High
School/GED ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The College ceremony is
scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
All CPCC faculty and staff and all guests will need to go through a
security check, so please allow adequate time.
According to the full-time instructor job description, one of the
responsibilities of a full-time faculty member is to participate in
activities which enhance the College's service to students and to the
community. Participation in graduation ceremonies is one way faculty
meet this responsibility.
Because the College conducts only one graduation ceremony each year, all
faculty are expected to march in cap and gown in the ceremony unless
they are assisting with graduation as a member of the graduation
committee or as a volunteer or unless they are participating in or
assisting with the Adult High School/GED ceremony. If a faculty member
is unable to participate in the graduation ceremony, the faculty member
is expected to inform the division director. Exceptions to active
participation in the graduation ceremony will be handled on an
individual basis at the division level.
Regalia are on sale now at the CPCC Majors Bookstore. Faculty are
reminded that rental orders need to be placed by April 18, 2008, and
purchases of the Class Keeper Graduate Fabric need to be ordered by
April 7, 2008, in order to arrive in time for the ceremony.
Mark Helms is coordinating volunteers for the College graduation, and
Florence Patterson is coordinating volunteers for the Adult High
School/GED graduation.

>From Diann Back
Microsoft Office 2007 Tip of the Week: Outlook 2007 Calendar Basics
Scheduling activities in Outlook 2007 is as simple as choosing the
correct type of entry. You can schedule activities in your Outlook
Calendar as appointments, meetings, events, or tasks. Your choice of
entry type will depend on who else is involved and how you want the
entry to appear. By selecting entries in your calendar correctly, you'll
know at a glance what's going on, when, and with whom.
You'll choose from four types of entry.
1. Appointment: An appointment is an activity that involves only you, at
a scheduled time.
2. Meeting: A meeting occurs at a scheduled time, like an appointment.
The difference is that you invite other people by using a meeting
request that's sent via e-mail.
3. Event: An event is an activity that lasts all day long. Unlike an
appointment or meeting, an event doesn't block out time in your
calendar. With an event, you can still have other entries appear in your
schedule for that day.
4. Task: A task is an activity that involves only you, and that doesn't
need a scheduled time. New to Outlook 2007 is an area in your calendar's
Day and Week views that shows tasks.

Do you wish your program had more resources? How about your campus?
Here's your opportunity to make it happen! This year, for the first
time, the CPCC Employee Annual Campaign allows you to designate your
gift to a specific program area or to a specific campus fund. Imagine
the possibilities you could create and the rewards you, your programs,
and your campus could benefit from directly!
Maybe you'd like more resources for the development or promotion of a
new certificate or course offering. Or perhaps you'd like to enhance the
appearance of your campus. It's your choice - choose an amount you can
donate, then choose what area you'd like your gift to support. You, your
program, your campus, our students, faculty, and staff, and our entire
community will benefit!
Visit 2008 Employee Campaign
for more
information or to make your gift online.
Thank you in advance for your support of the CPCC Employee Annual
Campaign.

pieces for us. Come celebrate with us and experience some amazing art in
action! Authors will participate in a book signing following the event.

Crafting the Query with Jodi Helmer
Thursday, March 27, 10:00-11:00 a.m.
Overcash, Room 300
Our research has established that CPCC Press is the only community
college publishing house in the entire United States. Our mission is to
offer CPCC faculty, staff and select community writers the opportunity
to become published authors. Whether it's academic and text materials,
or the next great American novel, the CPCC Press wants to celebrate new
Carolina authors by providing them with this informative workshop.
What's the best way to capture an editor's attention? It's with a great
query letter! Crafting the Query provides the essential tools for
writing a great query. Jodi Helmer will cover the basics of selecting a
topic and researching publications as well as specific details on what a
query letter should contain and how to promote your expertise as a
writer. At this workshop, Susan Alford, project coordinator for CPCC
Press, will be present to answer all of your questions related to CPCC
Press and the publishing industry. We hope you will join us for this
fun, educational and eye-opening workshop!
Please contact Susan Alford for more information.

The 13th Annual Skyline Run/Walk is scheduled for Saturday, April 26.
Hopefully, you have been doing your "Be Well" walks in preparation for
this event. The team captains for each campus have met and are in the
final stages of developing their master strategies to capture the
coveted Skyline Run/Walk trophy. We also have the "Stepping Up" trophy
that goes to the campus team with the largest percentage increase in
participation.
Please show your support for our students by registering as a member of
your campus team. Fast or slow, graceful or awkward, we need you. The
registration fee is $18, and proceeds go to support student
scholarships. There are also a limited number of complimentary
registrations. Please contact your team captains if you are interested.
You can also register online by going to the following website:
http://www1.cpcc.edu/foundation/skyline
For the past five years, Cato Campus has won the Skyline Run/Walk
trophy. Last year, Levine Campus had the largest percentage increase and
took home to "Stepping Up" trophy. We look forward to seeing who will
win this year.
