Donated items can be dropped off at any campus library now through Monday, February 18. PBS videos now available via NC Live: Have you heard? Effective January 1, NC Live launched its new media collection of PBS videos. What does this mean? It means that you no longer have to wait for reruns of your favorite PBS programs or for the videos to be returned to the library. As a member of NC Live, North Carolina's statewide library consortium, CPCC students, faculty and staff now have free access to nearly 250 educational and entertainment PBS programs covering a wide variety of topics. Remember Ken Burns' Baseball and The Civil War? Like jazz? How about the award-winning series of American Experience and Frontline? A second group of videos will be available in the later part of January 2008 that will include children's programming from the highly acclaimed Cyberchase and Liberty Kids series. In order to watch these videos on computers in the library or at home, users will need Flash Media Player 9.0 or higher and a high-speed Internet connection. The NC Live Video Collection can be found under Browse Databases by Name on the Library's website. Library Reserve reminder to faculty: Welcome back and Happy New Year! It is hard to believe, but the first day of class is just a day away and things will be back in full swing at CPCC. In order to ensure that we have the materials you need for your class, we are asking that you check your course reserves list to make sure that the information listed is correct. Also, library-owned materials placed on reserve last semester have been removed. In addition, below are friendly policy and procedure reminders regarding reserve materials and copyright compliance: * Library owned materials placed on reserve must be renewed each semester. * To place new items on reserve, complete the Online Course Reserve Form and take items to the library where materials will be placed on reserve. * When withdrawing materials from reserve, please inform library staff of items to be removed from reserve status or come to the library to remove items. * The distribution of photocopied materials for reserves from the same instructor for the same course requires verification of copyright clearance each semester. * Consumable works such as workbooks or standardized tests cannot be placed on reserve. * Permission to use and place articles on reserve for consecutive semesters must be obtained via the Copyright Clearance Center. Your anticipated cooperation in adhering to these policies and procedures is appreciated. Please contact Yan.Wang at cpcc.edu or Jennifer.Arnold at cpcc.edu if you have any additional questions or need further assistance. We wish you a wonderful spring semester! Floppy drives gone bye-bye in the Central Campus Library: Computers in the Central Campus Library reference area have been upgraded. As a result of the upgrade, floppy disk drives are no longer available as personal storage medium. To compensate for this enhancement, 128MB USB flash (thumb) drives can be purchased at any campus library for $10 each. Upgrades to computers have also been made at the Harper and Levine campus libraries. In addition, CD-Rs will no longer be sold. Library adds Nursing Resource Center Database: In support of the nursing and allied health programs, the Library recently added Gale's Nursing Resource Center to its database collection. Designed for community college nursing programs, Nursing Resource Center provides content needed by students for research papers and basic nursing theory overviews, including nursing care plans, as well as multimedia content. The content (just like Literature Resource Center) is organized into tabs: Diseases & Conditions, Assessments, Diagnostics, Interventions, Care Plants, Multimedia, Journal Citations, and Related Articles. The Nursing Resource Center database is accessible from the library's website under databases by name. We would like to extend a big thanks to all who assisted in the evaluation process and provided us with feedback last fall. Your input was appreciated. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... An additional space has been added on the form to allow for corrections to general ledger account or position numbers. It has been determined that a general ledger account or position number change should be transparent to the employee, so a new field has been added on the form to allow the corrections without involving a new contract and employee signatures. NOTE: The new field is for corrections to contracts only and does not replace the normal PAF or Position Change Notification for positions. The day begins with an introduction to King's life and lessons. Participating students are then randomly assigned to groups and given a service project at a local organization to complete. Students must work together and utilize problem-solving skills in order to finish their task. At the end of the day, students reassemble to reflect on their accomplishments in a guided discussion. This helps students process all that happened during the day. This event is free and open only to the CPCC community. We provide transportation, breakfast, lunch and dinner. Participants are asked to dress appropriately. Registration begins 8:00 a.m. the day of the event in the Student Commons area of the Overcash Center. NSP is administered by the N.C. State Education Assistance Authority (NCSEAA). Eligibility The Nurse Scholars Program (NSP) is a competitive, merit-based scholarship/loan program available to students who have chosen to enter the nursing profession. Financial need is not a criterion. An 11-member Nurse Scholars Commission selects recipients for the award on the basis of superior academics (3.0 minimum grade point average on a 4.0 scale), leadership potential, and desire to practice nursing on a full-time basis in N.C. Recipients must be N.C. residents. Students must plan to enter a nursing program at a participating college or university in the state of N.C. or hospitals that offer nurse education programs which prepare students for licensure as a registered nurse (RN). Value The annual value of the award is based upon the type of nurse education sought. Enrolled on a full-time, 12 credit hour per semester basis. Funding amounts are: * $3,000 per year for an associate's degree in nursing (ADN) * $3,000 per year for a hospital diploma in nursing * $5,000 per year for a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) * $2,500 per year for a part time RN student in a RN-to-BSN degree program. Half of the award is made available to recipients in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. The NSP scholarship/loan is renewable. Subject to legislative funding up to three years. Up to 400 NSP scholarships/loans are awarded annually. Application Procedure The NSP application is online and may be accessed by completing the scholarship application tool (the Scholarship Wizard). Click the Apply Now link under the Related Links section below to be directed to the Scholarship Wizard. The interest rate for cash repayment is 10% and cash repayment must be repaid within ten years from graduation Prospective Teacher Scholarship Loan: Created by the N.C. General Assembly in 1957, this program was designed to provide scholarship loans to qualified individuals who are pursuing college degrees to become teachers in the public schools of N.C. Eligibility The Prospective Teacher Scholarship Loan is a competitive, merit-based scholarship-loan program available to full-time students who have chosen to enter the education profession. A school official such as a high school guidance counselor or principal must recommend high school students for this award. Any student receiving funding for these disciplines in prior years will remain eligible for service cancellation in these areas. Contact the PTSL Manager at NCSEAA if you have questions. Value The annual award is: 1. $4,000 per year for juniors and seniors. 2. $2,500 per year for freshmen and sophomores and community college students planning to transfer into a teacher education program at a four-year institution. One half of the award is made available to the recipients in the fall semester and the remainder in the spring semester. Recipients may renew the scholarship-loan up to three years. Other activities include live performances featuring African dances and drumming, a hip hop artist, panel discussions and more. View the detailed calendar of planned events . We believe that you will find these programs educational and enlightening and look forward to you joining us. To ensure that we have adequate accommodations, we are asking that you RSVP if you intend to bring your entire class to any of these programs. If you require additional information, you may contact retha.hall at cpcc.edu or Jennifer.conway at cpcc.edu. A note about Black History Month: Black History was established by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a renowned African American educator, historian and founder of the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History . To increase the awareness of the history, contributions and achievements of Africans and Black Americans, Woodson organized the first annual Negro History Week in February 1926. In the early 1970s, to reflect the change in attitude and culture, this celebration was changed to Black History Week. Due to its wide acceptance, this celebratory event subsequently evolved into Black History Month in 1976. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
