Where does North Carolina's next governor stand on transportation issues
that affect the Charlotte region? Find out when the Regional Roads
Committee presents a series of forums with each of the 2008 N.C.
gubernatorial candidates.
The Regional Roads Committee is a consortium of representatives from
chambers of commerce from 13 counties in the Charlotte region. Its
purpose is to harness the regional business community in support of
regional transportation needs focusing particularly on roads, transit
and land use planning.
The "Meet This Candidate" forums give each candidate an opportunity to
present his or her platform on how to meet our regional transportation
needs and create the viable infrastructure that will help to grow
existing businesses and attract new ones.
The forums will be held at the Tate Recital Hall in the Overcash Center:
Justice Bob Orr (R)
Tuesday, February 5
10:00 a.m. - Noon
Mayor Pat McCrory (R)
Monday, February 11

Nursing Resource Center:
The library recently obtained access to a group of online videos from
PBS through NCLive that we hope you are
enjoying. But, did you know there are other video clips available online
that you have access to as well?
One of the most recent electronic resources is the Nursing Resource
Center database. It contains many health-related, animated clips that
are usually one to three minutes in length. It can show the action of
the heart, various types of fractures, or what pneumonia looks like in
the lungs.
How do you view these online clips? First find the Nursing Resource
Center database by searching databases by name
or the subject
list of Health databases. Within the database, choose the Advanced
search option. Put in a keyword for the desired topic then Limit the
search to Animation. All available clips on the topic will be returned.
Happy viewing!
New Reference Source: Icons of Hip Hop: An encyclopedia of the movement,
music and culture:
Icons of Hip Hop: An encyclopedia of the movement, music and culture,
edited by Mickey Hess, is a two volume reference set chronicling the
history of the hip hop movement from its inception in the late '70s
through present day. In addition, this comprehensive resource provides
in-depth biographies and histories for both popular and lesser known hip
hop artists. Some of the featured artists include one of the first
groups of hip hop, The Sugarhill Gang; Eminem of the '90s, as well as
Kayne West, Russell Simmons and Jay-Z, who are still considered some of
the more popular artists performing today.
If you or your students are interested in knowing more about the history
of hip hop and its impact on society, this book lays it out in an
easy-to-read format. These volumes along with other featured books and
DVDs are currently on display in the Central Campus Library during Black
History Month. Stop by and check them out!

Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE37776F@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Professional Development and ITS
In order to provide the latest technology to our learning environment,
the College will migrate to Office 2007 this term. This migration is
essential to many course offerings throughout the College and to ensure
compatibility with outside constituents.
As an initial phase of this project, both Office 2003 and 2007 will be
installed in all instructional areas including labs, Student Technology
Centers, and Smart Classrooms. As a proactive step, the College is
installing Microsoft's backward compatibility update to all
workstations. This update allows employees to open files saved in the
new Office format.
To continue the migration, Professional Development in partnership with
ITS will provide training to the College community over the next few
months. The training opportunities will act as an overview, providing a
bridge between the most frequently performed tasks in applications
including Outlook and Word. Additional detailed training will be offered
as the College moves forward with this conversion.
Training sessions will be focused by campus, building, and area to
ensure each department or workgroup is transitioned to the new software
will minimal impact to its operations. Training will also include an
open lab session to provide one-on-one facilitation as needed. After
completing the two-hour training session, employees will have the new
Office 2007 installed on their workstations. This training course will
be listed in LearnerWeb and provide employees with professional
development credit.
The new software will require a hardware upgrade to operate effectively
in the various areas. ITS will coordinate the College's annual desktop
equipment deployments along with the training sessions.
For additional information regarding this effort, please review the

On Thursday, March 13, CPCC will partner with the City Emergency
Responders Planning Group to conduct a mock crisis drill on the Harper
Campus. The purpose of the event is to provide the College with an
opportunity to role play a "real-life" crisis event and to test our
emergency preparedness and crisis communications plans.
The drill will be held during Spring Break; therefore, we are in need of
more than 200 volunteers to assist with this effort.
Volunteers should report to the Harper Campus at 8:00 a.m. for breakfast
and an orientation session. Volunteers will learn more about the crisis
situation and receive their assignment at that time. The mock crisis
drill will be completed no later than 1:00 p.m.
Volunteers should plan to dress for an indoor or outdoor volunteer role.
Volunteers are eligible for 3 hours of professional development credit.

Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE3777A9@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Jerri Haigler
At CPCC, we continue to seek ways to provide safe campuses for our
students and staff. In light of yesterday's unfortunate tragedy at
Northern Illinois University, we wanted to update our students and staff
about our security measures and communication efforts at the College.
Students and staff are reminded to use the current emergency call boxes
located around the campus at the Student Parking Decks, elevators, and
in select locations such as Central High Building and Giles Building on
Central Campus to inform security of any emergencies. Students and staff
are also encouraged to contact CPCC security officers on campus
regarding any emergency situations.
During this semester, CPCC will be adding call boxes on all six campuses
with alert systems. The new call boxes will enable CPCC security to
alert students and staff with a siren indicating the need to remain
within a building. The new call boxes are scheduled to be installed on
all campuses by the end of the spring semester.
As always, we encourage you to partner with our security staff in our
effort to keep our campuses safe. If you see any suspicious behavior or
become aware of an emergency situation, contact CPCC security at 6911
(from a campus phone) or 704.330.6911. To obtain emergency notification
information or campus closing information, call 704.330.6888. In the
event of an emergency, students and staff will receive information by
email, on CPCC TV, on the CPCC website, and through our building captain
program.
For more information on what to do in an emergency, go to
http://cpcc.edu/emergency-services.
Thanks for your support as we strive to keep our campuses safe
throughout the year.

Civil Rights, Students and 1968: Where Are We Today?
* Tuesday, Feb. 26 11:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m.
* Pease Auditorium
Please join us as we celebrate Black History Month by taking a step into
the past with three former organizers of the Student Nonviolent
Coordinating Committee (SNCC). SNCC was formed in response to the
Greensboro sit-ins as a way to support those students in the movement.
Steve Crump, local news anchor and documentary filmmaker will moderate a
panel led by Theresa El-Amin, who began her civil rights leadership work
with SNCC in Tuskegee and Atlanta in 1966. Ruby Nell Sales and Isaac
Coleman will join Theresa as they speak of their experiences during the
1960s and detail the strategies that provided the foundation for
organizing communities into effective social action. For faculty and
classes: If you are interested in bringing your class to this program,
please RSVP to Amanda Capobianchi or Jennifer Conway in Student Life to
reserve ample seating for your class.
PLEASE NOTE: The lunch discussion (in LRC 404 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.) that
was advertised for students to attend after this program is now full.
Due to room constraints, we cannot accept any additional students,
faculty or staff for this portion of the program.

It is suggested that you print a screen copy showing the item and the
restriction to attach to your FS-25 P-Card form.

Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE377831@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Amanda Capobianchi
This spring, several guests have been invited to CPCC to talk in-depth
with faculty, staff and students about topics related to the core
competencies. There are several ways in which you can participate or get
your students involved. Watch the Communicator for continued updates on
featured speakers.
Our second guest, Jonathan Vehar, senior partner at New & Improved and
co-author of More Lightning, Less Thunder: How to Energize Innovative
Teams, will be joining us on Tuesday, March 4. Mr. Vehar is excited to
meet with both faculty, staff and classes of students while visiting to
discuss the promotion of effective teams to generate creative and
innovative solutions to problems.
For Classes & Students:
Jonathan Vehar's interactive discussion with students will focus on how
to create good teams and the common pitfalls and habits that get in the
way of our being effective team members and leaders. He'll present some
good techniques to use when working in teams and will suggest new ideas
and techniques to use when working in groups. This session is perfect
for any student, student organization, manager, and employee.
9:30- 10:45 a.m.
Tate Recital Hall, Overcash
Seating is limited. If you would like to reserve seats for you and your
class, please contact Amanda Capobianchi
or Jennifer Conway
in Student Life (6584).
For Faculty & Staff:
If you have selected Personal Growth and Responsibility (contributes
effectively as a team member) as the core competency for your class or
program, or if you want to learn more about helping students work better
in teams, this hands-on workshop is for you. Everyone is creative. It's
part of the human condition. Yet bringing out creativity and putting it
to work productively in a group setting can be a challenge. This is a
dynamic, interactive presentation designed to look at the blocks and
barriers that get in the way of teams working together effectively. This
workshop will focus on strategies for engaging everyone to participate,
not just the boisterous, the extroverts, or the loudest. By looking at a
set of ground rules for working together, initiatives to help
demonstrate good teamwork and tools and techniques to help students
collaborate effectively, you'll walk away with more strategies and
tactics to integrate teamwork in the classroom. For more information on
this workshop, please contact Karen Streppa
