Our vision to become the national leader in workforce development has actually become a reality, and the result of our outstanding efforts is being recognized across the country. Although our community college is the largest of the 58 community colleges in North Carolina, our focus is not on numbers, but on students and their success. We also are committed to providing skilled workers for area employers. Because of this focus, our enrollment numbers are increasing each year. CPCC serves more than 70,000 people throughout Mecklenburg County on six campuses. This fall, CPCC class registrations were up 15 percent. Enrollment growth has outpaced many community colleges across the state. That's why the 2007 Bond Referendum is extremely critical to our college. On Tuesday, November 6, this community will have an opportunity to vote on a $30 million bond referendum for our college. The college has been a good steward of the community's money, with all of our local bond dollars either spent or currently under contract. CPCC operates on a lower cost per square foot than the national educational market and the state community college average. The $30 million bond request will allow CPCC to address some of the growth and aging facility needs. The funds will also allow us to help drive Mecklenburg County's economy. Our website will provide you with detailed information regarding the 2007 bond request . If you have questions about the bonds or would like additional information, please contact Jerri Haigler in our Community Relations and Public Affairs office at 704.330.6660 or email her at jerri.haigler at cpcc.edu. I believe CPCC is certainly a good investment that yields a great return for this community. A: No. Flu vaccine is created from dead or inactive viruses that are not contagious. Q: Do I need a flu shot every year? A: Yes. Influenza viruses change every year. A new vaccine is used annually to fight the most current influenza virus. In addition, the antibody a person develops from the vaccine declines over time. Q: When should I get a flu shot? A: Influenza usually occurs from November until April, with activity peaking between late December and early March. The optimal time for flu shots is during October through November, however it is clinically beneficial to be vaccinated through December and January. Q: Why get a flu shot? A: Influenza usually leaves its victims unable to function for several days and is responsible for more than 200,000 hospitalizations each year.* Getting an annual flu shot is your best protection. *Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005. Q: Can children receive a flu shot? A: Maxim will immunize children 9 years old and older. Children between the ages of 9 and 17 will require parental consent in order to receive their flu immunization. Parents of children under the age of 9 will be asked to check with their primary care physician about flu immunizations for their child. Q: Should women who are pregnant receive a flu shot? A: Flu shots are recommended for women at all stages of pregnancy. Pregnant women in their first trimester are required to have a written prescription from their personal physician. Pregnant women in their second and third trimester may receive the flu shot without a prescription. Q: How effective is the flu shot? A: Flu vaccine has been determined to be about 75-90% effective in preventing the flu and is your best method of protection. Q: Who should get a flu shot? A: The CDC recommends that you receive a flu shot if you fit their criteria of high-risk or one of the following categories: * Anyone who wants to reduce the risk of contracting the flu. * Those over the age of 50 * People with high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, a history of stroke or heart attack, a chronic disease, diabetes, a compromised immune system, anemia, asthma or other breathing problems * A health care worker with high-risk patients * People who have had required regular medical follow-up or hospitalization during the preceding year because of chronic metabolic, kidney, or blood cell diseases * People traveling to a foreign country * People living or working with persons who fit into one of these categories Q: Can I still get the flu after I get the flu shot? A: Yes. Like other vaccines, flu vaccine is not 100% effective and does not take effect until one or two weeks after it is received. During this time, you will be just as susceptible to contract the flu as individuals who have not received the vaccination. Still, the best option to prevent flu is to get a yearly flu shot. Q: Am I classified as high-risk? A: You are classified as high-risk if you fall under one of the following categories: * 65 years of age or older * People who are in contact with persons at increased risk of influenza-related complications * Residents or employees of a nursing home or other chronic care facility where some of the residents have chronic medical conditions * People who have a chronic medical condition such as asthma or another lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, blood disease * People who have immune system problems caused either by disease (e.g., HIV or lymphoma) or by medication (e.g., chemotherapy or radiation therapy) * Health care workers who care for high-risk patients in the patients' homes Q: What are the side effects of getting a flu shot? A: For most people, vaccination causes no side effects. Less than 1/3 of those who receive a flu shot will experience some soreness at the vaccination site, and only 5 to 10 percent will suffer mild side effects such as low-grade fevers and headaches. Anyone who is allergic to eggs should avoid being vaccinated, since the virus used is grown in hens' eggs. Name Student ID# Course and Section Date student stopped attending To assist you in the process, a Financial Aid Attendance Report form is available at inside.cpcc. You may email or fax the form (5053) to our office. To eliminate FA students being billed and/or VA students being in overpayment, it is imperative that the Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs Office receive notification of all "never attendees" and/or withdrawals as quickly as possible. Changes in enrollment/attendance must be reported to prevent institutional liabilities. Throughout the semester, please continue forwarding the names for those students who have stopped attending or emailing the information to the Financial Aid Office and Veterans Affairs Office at julie-ann.anderson at cpcc.edu According to federal regulations, Title IV funds and VA Educational Benefits are awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of Title IV funds that the student was originally scheduled to receive. If the amount disbursed to the student is greater than the amount the student earned, unearned funds must be returned to the U.S. Department of Education within 30 days after the student stopped attending. The financial aid award is voided for students who never attended, and the student is billed for any tuition, fees and/or bookstore charges. For students who fail to receive at least one passing grade, a calculation is completed at the 50% point of the semester and the student is billed for Title IV funds not earned. If you have any questions, please contact the Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs Office at 6942. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Artwork in the 2008 exhibition will be returned to the artists after the first of the year in 2009. What's the timeline? Submission: Deadline for CPCC: Wednesday, December 5 Selection: late December 2007- January 2008 Notification: January - February 2008 Delivery: January - March 2008 Opening Reception: Spring 2008 (usually mid-March) How do artists submit works? Artists should submit images of their artworks (not the actual works) to Carol Whitman, either via email (carol.whitman at cpcc.edu ) or on a CD to Overcash 152. Be sure to include your name in the file title, such as Whitman_selfportrait.jpg. Also, I'll need a brief description of the piece, with size, medium, etc. If you have questions, please contact Carol Whitman; she will coordinate all CPCC submissions and send them as a group. Who may participate? Submissions are welcome from full-time and part-time faculty, students, alumni and staff of N.C. community colleges. Please encourage submissions from curriculum and continuing education areas, from the full range of fine arts and crafts, and from related fields such as advertising, graphic design, computer design, photography and film. Who chooses the art? President Lancaster makes the selections and supervises the placement of the artwork in the Caswell Building. The selections he makes from the photos, slides and digital images submitted are conditional. Final decisions about acceptance and placement for display will be made after the actual work is in hand. We ask that the selected works stay on display through 2008, IF POSSIBLE. Should community colleges collect submissions and send them together? Many community colleges prefer to present submissions as a package, and that's fine. It's also fine for artists to submit individually. We will notify you of the selections from your college as soon as they are made. There is no need to "pre-screen" submissions from your college. President Lancaster likes to have many pieces from which to choose when he makes the selections. How many pieces may an artist submit? There is no limit on the number of submissions. Neither is there any guarantee of selection. We suggest, however, that artists make sure submissions represent their very best work. Experience tells us that more than 20 submissions for a single artist tends to overwhelm the viewer. What kind of art are you looking for? All media suitable for use in a public office building are welcomed, including but not limited to painting, drawing, graphic design, computer design and animation, photography, pottery, stained glass, weaving, woodcarving, metalwork, sculpture, film and video and outdoor installations. We display artwork in the public spaces on all six floors of the Caswell Building, and the spaces are well suited to large-scale works. We have particular needs for large pieces in the fifth-floor assembly space, which is in constant use by groups both inside and outside the community college family. President Lancaster also looks for stained glass pieces for the main lobby, as well as large quilts, weavings and other fabric pieces. What about shipping and insurance? The artists are responsible for the safe delivery of selected pieces, which must be framed, mounted, or otherwise ready for display. We will work with artists and local community college staff to arrange pick up and delivery whenever possible, but we cannot pay shipping costs. The System Office is responsible for insuring the replacement value of the artworks while they are in the Caswell Building. Are there prizes? We do not award prizes. However, every year, a number of people buy pieces from the exhibit, and we have purchased one piece for a permanent collection, so artists do have the opportunity for both recognition and reward for participating. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Virginia Tech is still dealing with the aftermath of the incident and expects it to be an ongoing concern for the foreseeable future. Malik Rahman and the CPCC Information Technology Services department would like to invite the college community to a free webinar offered by Educause that will encapsulate summaries of the IT-related lessons learned from the Virginia Tech tragedy. This webinar will include the impact on the university's communication system; the notification issue; radio communications interoperability; and the sheer logistics of accommodating the communications infrastructure and control center needs for a variety of emergency responders and law enforcement. Identity management, privacy; data preservation and computer forensics will also be discussed. Overriding all of these issues is the question of federal, state, and local policies and ways in which policy issues were encountered, confronted, and managed.
