A: No. Flu vaccine is created from dead or inactive viruses that are not contagious. Q: Do I need a flu shot every year? A: Yes. Influenza viruses change every year. A new vaccine is used annually to fight the most current influenza virus. In addition, the antibody a person develops from the vaccine declines over time. Q: When should I get a flu shot? A: Influenza usually occurs from November until April, with activity peaking between late December and early March. The optimal time for flu shots is during October through November, however it is clinically beneficial to be vaccinated through December and January. Q: Why get a flu shot? A: Influenza usually leaves its victims unable to function for several days and is responsible for more than 200,000 hospitalizations each year.* Getting an annual flu shot is your best protection. *Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2005. Q: Can children receive a flu shot? A: Maxim will immunize children 9 years old and older. Children between the ages of 9 and 17 will require parental consent in order to receive their flu immunization. Parents of children under the age of 9 will be asked to check with their primary care physician about flu immunizations for their child. Q: Should women who are pregnant receive a flu shot? A: Flu shots are recommended for women at all stages of pregnancy. Pregnant women in their first trimester are required to have a written prescription from their personal physician. Pregnant women in their second and third trimester may receive the flu shot without a prescription. Q: How effective is the flu shot? A: Flu vaccine has been determined to be about 75-90% effective in preventing the flu and is your best method of protection. Q: Who should get a flu shot? A: The CDC recommends that you receive a flu shot if you fit their criteria of high-risk or one of the following categories: * Anyone who wants to reduce the risk of contracting the flu. * Those over the age of 50 * People with high blood pressure, irregular heartbeat, a history of stroke or heart attack, a chronic disease, diabetes, a compromised immune system, anemia, asthma or other breathing problems * A health care worker with high-risk patients * People who have had required regular medical follow-up or hospitalization during the preceding year because of chronic metabolic, kidney, or blood cell diseases * People traveling to a foreign country * People living or working with persons who fit into one of these categories Q: Can I still get the flu after I get the flu shot? A: Yes. Like other vaccines, flu vaccine is not 100% effective and does not take effect until one or two weeks after it is received. During this time, you will be just as susceptible to contract the flu as individuals who have not received the vaccination. Still, the best option to prevent flu is to get a yearly flu shot. Q: Am I classified as high-risk? A: You are classified as high-risk if you fall under one of the following categories: * 65 years of age or older * People who are in contact with persons at increased risk of influenza-related complications * Residents or employees of a nursing home or other chronic care facility where some of the residents have chronic medical conditions * People who have a chronic medical condition such as asthma or another lung disease, heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, blood disease * People who have immune system problems caused either by disease (e.g., HIV or lymphoma) or by medication (e.g., chemotherapy or radiation therapy) * Health care workers who care for high-risk patients in the patients' homes Q: What are the side effects of getting a flu shot? A: For most people, vaccination causes no side effects. Less than 1/3 of those who receive a flu shot will experience some soreness at the vaccination site, and only 5 to 10 percent will suffer mild side effects such as low-grade fevers and headaches. Anyone who is allergic to eggs should avoid being vaccinated, since the virus used is grown in hens' eggs. Visit www.bcbsnc.com/flu for more answers to your flu-related questions. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The event was designed to give the community a glimpse at all the College has to offer. Guests could attend more than 60 free, one-hour classes, take campus tours, visit information booths, and much more. Saturday's event was a huge success with more than 500 in attendance. An event of this magnitude would not have been possible without help from various areas of the College. More than 100 volunteers gave of their time to make the event a success. From instructors who led the classes, to volunteers who greeted and registered guests, the event was certainly a team effort. I'd like to thank everyone involved with Free College Day. Special thanks to Mark Little, who was the main organizer of the event, and the Marketing Department for all of their assistance. Thanks also to Stuart Beame for coordinating the registration process, and Libby Vagnoni for recruiting and coordinating volunteers. CPCC is fortunate to have such dedicated and committed employees. On November 6, the voters of Mecklenburg County once again expressed their confidence in CPCC by approving our $30 million bond referendum. The passing of the bonds confirms that this community values CPCC and the work we do. I want to take this opportunity to thank this community for supporting our College. CPCC has been recognized nationally as a leader in workforce development. Each year, we touch more than 70,000 people in this community at our six campuses and provide them with training and educational programs that make a difference in their lives. Without the support of this community, these success stories would not be possible. The passing of the bonds will allow us to address some of the growth and renovation needs at our College. We commit to keep our promises and look forward to beginning these construction projects in the near future. Again, thank you for your support of CPCC and the life changing work we do. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The following questions and answers contain information that will be helpful during this busy time. Q: How can students change their program of study or declare a program? A: Faculty advisors, program chairs, division directors, and student counselors can submit a program change for a student. When instructors identify students who need to declare a program or change their program, they can: a) refer them to their faculty advisor b) refer them to the appropriate program chair/division director, or c) refer them to the Student Success desk at multi-campuses or Counseling Office at Central Campus, Central High Bldg., Suite 212, to schedule an appointment to meet with a student counselor. Once the Program Admit/Change Form is completed and signed by both the student and the authorized faculty member or student counselor, it is turned in to the Office of Admissions and Registration for entry to the student's academic record. Q: I have a list of students to advise, but I don't know how they were assigned to me. What process do students undergo to get a faculty advisor? A: Here's how the process works for students: Students who have never attended college before this semester 1. meet with an academic advisor in Counseling and Advisement Services 2. discuss educational goals and strategies for success 3. select courses for the first semester 4. are assigned a faculty advisor based on the student's program of study Students transferring to CPCC from other colleges/universities 1. make an appointment to meet with a student counselor by calling 704-330-6433 or 704-330-5013 2. meet with student counselor 3. discuss educational goals and strategies for success 4. review transfer credit to determine if placement tests are required 5. discuss how previous credit will apply to CPCC programs 6. are assigned faculty advisor based on student's program of study Note: Depending on how much transfer credit the student has, the student counselor may recommend courses for the first semester or may refer the student immediately to his or her faculty advisor for course recommendations for all subsequent semesters. Note that students in A.A.S. programs work with their faculty advisors until graduation. Students in College Transfer programs work with faculty advisors until they have completed 30 hours. After 30 hours, they work with academic advisors in the Transfer Resource Center or with student counselors to prepare for graduation. Q: What is the Counselor/Faculty Liaison Program? A: The liaison program links academic divisions with student counselors to facilitate communications. Each division has a counseling partner who serves as the primary contact for updates from the academic division about new programs and curriculum changes. The counselor then passes the information along to the rest of the counseling staff. The counselor liaison also provides information to the faculty liaison about services and policies that affect students in order to facilitate academic advising and student success. In order to facilitate student registration, we're requesting that all employees not involved with registration related activities sign off from the Datatel system for the first half of the day today. The system is sized to enable 600 concurrent users. We're experiencing about 1200 users attempting to access the system simultaneously through the web. This situation is caused by a combination of factors including: 1. Design changes of the Datatel system in its release 18. 2. Change of registration opening time from midnight to 7:30AM. The students who used to register at midnight while no employees were using the system are competing for system resources with employees. Your ITS team is doing all that is possible to resolve this congestion and improve system responsiveness. Your cooperation in this effort is appreciated. We will provide updates as more information becomes available. Malik K. Throughout the semester, please continue forwarding the names for those students who have stopped attending or emailing the information to the Financial Aid Office and Veterans Affairs Office at amy.schultheis at cpcc.edu Name Student ID# Course and Section Date student stopped attending To assist you in the process, a Financial Aid Attendance Report form is available at inside.cpcc. You may email or fax the form (5053) to our office. To eliminate FA students being billed and/or VA students being in overpayment, it is imperative that the Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs Office receive notification of all "never attendees" and/or withdrawals as quickly as possible. According to federal regulations, Title IV funds and VA Educational Benefits are awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of Title IV funds that the student was originally scheduled to receive. If the amount disbursed to the student is greater than the amount the student earned, unearned funds must be returned to the U.S. Department of Education within 30 days after the student stopped attending. The financial aid award is voided for students who never attended, and the student is billed for any tuition, fees and/or bookstore charges. For students who fail to receive at least one passing grade, a calculation is completed at the 50% point of the semester and the student is billed for Title IV funds not earned. If you have any questions, please contact the Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs Office at 6942. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Oftentimes, there may be behaviors displayed in the classroom that are questionable. The following questions contain information that has proven helpful during this busy time. Q: If I have a student who makes an inappropriate comment that could possibly be of a threatening nature to the instructor, classmates or themselves, how should I handle this concern? A: Acknowledge the comment as being of a serious nature to the class and inform the student that all comments are considered serious until proven otherwise. Students should understand the repercussions of making such statements and should be told that if an inappropriate comment is made in class, a referral may be made to Security or to Counseling and Advisement as deemed appropriate. More specifically, if a student makes a direct threat to harm another person or damage property, CPCC's Office of Security should be contacted immediately at ext. 6911. Students who state a specific intent to commit suicide or otherwise inflict self-harm should be immediately referred to Counseling Services and, preferably, escorted to our offices at that time. If the student refuses to see a student counselor, then please contact Counseling Services immediately at ext. 6433/5013. If the incident occurs during nights or weekends, then Security should be notified instead. Q. How do I approach a student I am concerned about? A. Student counselors are available for any student who needs assistance with personal concerns or emotional stress. Depending on the acuteness of the situation, students may be seen immediately, may be asked to wait briefly, or may be asked to schedule an appointment for a later time. You can play a key role in helping students connect with a counselor. The following phrases can be effective when speaking with a student about your concerns: * I'm concerned about you * I want to offer you the support you need to do well/succeed * I see great potential in you * It seems like something is standing in your way * Many resources are available * Your (grades, absences, other) in my class have caught my attention * Perhaps talking to someone would help * How can I help you be more successful? * What steps would help you understand what this course is requiring? * I can help you get in touch with a counselor on campus Early Alert: Instructors who determine that a student needs intervention for the reasons listed below can make referrals to Counseling using the Online Student Profile or through the link https://success.cpcc.edu/. Log in, click on the class which the student is attending, click in box beside name of student, select Intervene at the bottom of the page and then complete questions. Finally, click "send" and your request will be forwarded to the Counseling and Advisement office. In 2004, the NCCCS indicated that individual community colleges had discretion in whether to admit undocumented aliens. Since the 2004 state system communication, CPCC has been admitting all students to the College. Our decision in 2004 was based on reviewing practices at the public schools and universities that were already admitting undocumented aliens. We have not required proof of citizenship for any student. However, all students are admitted and billed based on in-state or out-of-state residency. The November communication from the NCCCS was in agreement with our previous practice. CPCC is an open-door institution and we serve all students. Our goal is to help all students achieve their dreams, whether it's through our Adult Basic Skills program, GED/Adult High School, diploma programs, certificate programs, or to advance their skills through training. Sponsored by the Talbots Charitable Foundation, this unique scholarship fund annually awards five $10,000 scholarships and fifty $1,000 scholarships. The fund was created to fill a void in scholarship programs, which typically make awards to traditional college students. Eligible applicants are women currently residing in the United States who earned a high-school diploma or GED at least ten years ago; are currently seeking a degree from an accredited two- or four-year college, university, or vocational-technical school; and have at least two full-time semesters or 24 credits remaining to complete their undergraduate degree. The deadline for entries is January 2, 2008, or until 1,000 eligible applications have been received, whichever happens first. Applications for the 2008 Talbots Women's Scholarship are available at the Talbots website. While spring registration is already in progress, we know from experience that many students will wait until after the winter holidays to register, and they will need our help. Faculty and Learning Unit staff are asked to please consider volunteering for a couple of hours to help students use the website to find available seats, put together a schedule, direct them to appropriate personnel, and/or answer questions. You are not being asked to counsel students on specific program requirements but to help students maneuver through our registration process and to make them feel welcome. We need volunteers from 9:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on January 2, 3, 4 and again on January 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, particularly at Central, but all campuses need volunteers during the days before the semester begins. If you have not volunteered before and need some training before volunteering, please register via LearnerWeb for one of the following: Central Campus Dec. 4 - TE 500 from 10:30- 11:30 a.m. Jan. 2- TBD Levine Campus Dec. 6- LV 1319 from 2:00- 3:00 p.m. To volunteer, contact my secretary, Patricia Williams, patricia.williams at cpcc.edu or 330-6518 and tell her where and when you will be able to help. Many thanks. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
