Christo is known for his visually impressive and often controversial installations, which include wrapping well known items large and small, such as islands, rivers, buildings (the Reichstag), bridges (Pont Neuf), trees, toilets, and bouquets of flowers. Other works include the 24-mile-long curtain called Running Fence in Marin and Sonoma counties in California, and most recently The Gates in New York City's Central Park. Art critic David Bourdon has described Christo's wrappings as a "revelation through concealment." Christo's partner, Jeanne-Claude, manages the public relations and logistical side of the partnership, while Christo makes the final creative decisions as the primary artist and designer of the projects. Please visit the library during the month of March to learn more about this iconoclastic, creative duo. Also, in recognition of National Women's History Month, a variety of books celebrating the lives, achievements and contributions of women will be displayed throughout the month. Therefore, funds to cover part-time salary, supplies, travel, postage and other miscellaneous expenses anticipated before June must be encumbered in advance. State account numbers begin with 11- or 17- and County account numbers begin with 21-. Review Accounts All State and County accounts should be reviewed and budget transfers submitted to move funds, if necessary, to where they will be needed. Procurement should be notified if there are current encumbrances which should be released. This will allow obligated funds to be redistributed. P-Cards Charges Internal Reimbursement Requisitions (encumbrances not linked to E-procurement) must be entered to cover charges to P-Cards made in March, April and May. Be sure to include P-Card purchases already made in March in these encumbrances. Vendor #0077462 should be used on all P-Card Requisitions. This number should also be shown on P-Card reports for March, April, and May when they are submitted to Accounts Payable. When P-Card statements for March, April and May are processed, the appropriate BO will be reduced by the amounts indicated on the report. May purchases may or may not be paid from current fiscal year, dependent upon when the vendor's submission of charges to the bank. June purchases will be billed and paid from next year's budget. Non P-Card Purchases E-Procurement Requisitions for Blanket Orders (BO) and Purchase Orders (PO) should be entered to encumber funds for anticipated purchases not charged to a P-Card. The vendor for these purchases is the company or organization providing the goods or services. Travel Expenses Internal Reimbursement Requisitions (encumbrances not linked to E-Procurement) for Blanket Order (BO) should be done to cover anticipated travel expenses. A separate BO should be done for each traveler - the vendor for travel BOs is the name of the traveler. (If registration fees can be put on the P-Card, the registration fees should be included in the BO for P-Card charges and not in travel BOs.) Postage Internal Reimbursement Requisitions (encumbrances not linked to E-procurement) must be entered to cover postage charges for March, April and May. Vendor #0093444 should be used on all Postage Requisitions. When postage charges for March, April and May are processed the appropriate BO will be reduced by the amounts indicated by the Mailroom. June postage will be paid from next year's budget. Deadlines: * March 30, 2007 - All Requisitions (Internal Reimbursements & E-Procurement) for Blanket Orders and Purchase Orders must be entered by March 30, 2007. All available State and County funds will be frozen after this date. **State funds exempted from this deadline are listed below. * May 1, 2007 - All items, regardless of funding sources, must be received and all invoices submitted to Accounts Payable. If an encumbrance included an item that will not be purchased or travel expense which will not be processed, Procurement should be notified to reduce the encumbrance so those funds can be released. **State funds exempted from this deadline are listed below. * June 1, 2007 - May P card statements and receipts must be received in Accounts Payable. June 1, 2007 (NEW 2007 DEADLINE) All items associated with the below **state exemption list must be received and all invoices submitted to Accounts Payable. A: Counseling sessions are as diverse as our students, but the form below provides a summary of the content of a first meeting between a student and a counselor. The counselor completes this form for the student at the conclusion of the session. Over the course of the session, the counselor and student will have discussed academic and personal goals, along with potential obstacles to achieving the goals. Follow-up sessions with the counselor and referrals (on-campus and off-campus) are commonly used to address the identified concerns. The referral information below is specific to Central Campus, so counselors at other campuses have alternate versions which provide campus-specific locations and phone numbers. For academic planning, the right side of the form lists the student's program of study, contact information for his or her faculty advisor, placement into developmental courses based on test results, and recommended courses for the following semester. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A woman who receives a WINGS scholarship has a clear educational and career plan; she has proven her ability to accomplish not only academic work but to do well in other facets of life. Her own personal vision is so strong that people cannot help but want to support her in it. The WINGS Scholarship provides financial support but also offers something potentially even more valuable. Two or more seasoned, active, executive or professional women chosen for the specific expertise they can bring to the recipients plan for herself are assigned as mentors to every WINGS recipient. What these mentors give is their own experience, perspectives, counsel, networks, and personal support - what they give is themselves. Eligible applicants will be considered who.... * Have a clear sense for what they want to achieve through education and a plan for doing it. * Have successfully completed some post-high school studies with a grade-point average of 2.5 whether they are currently enrolled or not. * Have shown not only in their studies but in other ways that they are serious about their personal and career goals. * Are U.S. citizens * Are at least 25 years old. * Meet eligibility criteria to receive financial aid * Are the major source of financial support for themselves and/or their children, or need retraining in order to achieve higher earnings or greater financial security. After an extensive assessment of our services, including a survey of several other colleges and universities, we have made some changes this term to include the following: * A recommitment to utilizing methods which will develop independent learners * We have boosted staffing of core areas of math and English; all tutors now hold at least a bachelor's degree in their field and participate in tutor training and continuing education; * Expanded services to area campuses * Supplemental instruction in introductory/general chemistry, and anatomy & physiology * Equipment upgrades in the ALC-Computer Lab A new component this term is the Academic Success Lab. This lab will work with students on an individual basis to develop academic success strategies that will serve the student in coursework across the curriculum. Services available include: * An individual assessment of their academic concerns, their learning style and study skills. * An individualized success plan is developed with each student based on their needs. * Workshops are offered on relevant topics (study skills, note taking, test taking strategies) * Referrals to other workshops, programs and labs For any questions about the Academic Learning Center, contact Gene Ritter, Director, at 6615. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Start committee meetings with a small icebreaker especially if there are members on the committee who don't know one another or are new to the college. Check with Professional Development for ideas and/or resources. 2. Encourage your department or committee to foster partnerships with others at the College and in the community by finding common ground. 1. A: Student counselors at CPCC are available to serve as a resource to faculty and staff who are looking for ways to help students reach their goals. We also welcome the opportunity to speak with you about our department's services or to help connect you with other services in the community if they are a better match for the student's need. Student counselors are available for any student who needs assistance. If a student is in an immediate crisis, follow the guidelines at the bottom of this message. In non-crisis situations, it is the student's responsibility to seek help, and as an instructor, advisor, or mentor, you can encourage them in any of the following ways: * Speak to the student about your concern for him or her. (See suggested phrases below for initiating the conversation.) * Let the student know that free, confidential counseling is available on campus. * Discuss the benefits of speaking with a counselor with the student. * Walk with the student to the counseling office to make an appointment. * Make regular announcements in your class about services provided on campus. * Download a handout or information leaflet from Counseling's Online Help Center and share it with the student. Instructors in developmental courses for Title III students can make referrals to counseling using the Online Student Profile. Expanded use of the Online Student Profile in future semesters will increase access to this online tool for faculty. Suggested phrases for referring a student to Counseling Services: * I'm concerned about you * I want to offer you the support you need to do well/succeed * I see great potential in you * It seems like something is standing in your way * Many resources are available * Your (grades, absences, other) in my class have caught my attention * Perhaps talking to someone would help * How can I help you be more successful? * What steps would help you understand what this course is requiring? * I can help you get in touch with a counselor on campus. If a student is in crisis... * Students do not need an appointment in these circumstances. * Top priority will be given to students who appear to be a danger to themselves or others, or who are in such a highly emotional state that they seem unable to control their behavior (crying, shouting, lethargy, etc.). * If you are a faculty or staff member who is with a student at such a time, you are encouraged to 1. Listen to the student's concern or complaint. 2. Express concern for the student. 3. Speak calmly yet firmly to the student and assure him or her that CPCC has people who are ready to help. 4. Let the student know that you would like to get him/her connected with a student counselor. 5. Assure him/her that the services are confidential and free. 6. When possible, phone Counseling Services on your campus. a. Identify yourself to the person answering. b. Tell him/her that you are with a student who needs to see a counselor about a personal concern right away. (Be sure to clarify that this is not an academic matter.) c. Let him/her know that you (or someone from your area) will be walking the student to Counseling Services. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Are there any online resources I could suggest? A: Counseling and Advising offers free online mental health screenings. The screenings cover depression, anxiety, eating disorders, alcohol use/abuse, bipolar disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder. The screenings are confidential and take just a few minutes to complete. After answering the questions, students find out if their symptoms are consistent with a disorder and receive referral information to set up an appointment with a personal counselor at CPCC if they decide to seek additional assistance. The screening is not meant as a diagnosis or substitute for meeting with a mental health professional, but it is based on solid research and testing. Students answering honestly should get a clear picture of whether further professional consultation would be beneficial. The online screening is located here: http://www.cpcc.edu/ican/pcap/mental-health-screening For additional information, contact Kirk Knott, counselor, at 704.330.6381. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As a departmental secretary, I usually tell inquiring students that it's faster to apply online. Is this correct? A: That's usually true, and it's certainly convenient. Just go online at http://www.cpcc.edu/enroll/ and follow the step by step instructions. In approximately 20 minutes (in most cases), the applicant will receive an email providing his/her student ID and instructions about setting up a SNAP account. Remember that a SNAP account is required for access to online services. Q: My next door neighbor applied online, but he did not want to give too much information electronically. His application was delayed. Why was that? A: As a general rule, insufficient information means an application will require manual processing by the Admissions Office. You see, it's very important to avoid duplicate records. There may be existing files that, to the system, look very similar. It is not uncommon, in fact, that the applicant already has a file. These situations require human judgment to determine whether or not a file is a duplicate. Q: So what can a person do who does not want to send information electronically? A: Admission to CPCC is easy for anyone. Paper applications are available at all CPCC campuses as well as online at www.cpcc.edu . Applications can also be mailed to students who call 704.330.2722 and request them. The paper application provides good information as well such as instructions for mailing or faxing and steps in the admissions process for both degree and non-degree students. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... All the third graders will take a 25-question math test on April 19. We will sponsor the class with the highest number of correct answers. You can support this worthy cause by pledging an amount (of your choosing) per correct answer. The class will have no more than 25 students; therefore, there will be at most 625 correct answers. If you pledge a penny per correct answer, your donation would be at most $6.25. If you pledge a nickel per correct answer, your donation would be at most $31.25. If you pledge a dime per correct answer, your donation would be at most $62.50. Alternatively, you can pledge a flat amount, rather than an amount per problem. No pledge is too great or too small! Beyond raising money, the goals of the fundraiser are to improve the students' math skills, to help prepare them for the End-of-Grade test, and to increase their interest in and enjoyment of mathematics. We will accept pledges through April 17. To pledge, send your name and pledge amount via e-mail to Laura Tucker (laura.tucker at cpcc.edu ). During the week of April 23, you will be notified of the amount of your donation and you will have until May 14 to submit your money. The scholarships will be presented at the annual meeting of the Southern Region IPPS Oct.28-31, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The meeting site is the Chattanooga Marriot Hotel at the Convention Center. The recipients will receive a stipend of $1,000 plus $500 for travel, and will be provided free registration and tours at the meetings. (Awardees are responsible for their own travel and lodging arrangements.) Awardees must be present at the meeting on Monday, Oct. 29, to accept their scholarships. Purpose of the scholarships is to provide financial encouragement to undergraduate students in horticulture as memorial to Dr. Munday. Awards will be given on the basis of a student's expressed interest in plant propagation, financial need, activities and academic record. The Munday scholarships are offered annually to second-year students and higher at universities, two-year colleges, and technical schools in the state in which the Southern Region IPPS meeting is held that year, plus adjoining states. Because the meeting this year is in Chattanooga, horticulture students in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Missouri are eligible. An application form is online at http://inside.cpcc.edu/forms/financialaid/ippsapplication.pdf. Applicant must return completed forms to my attention by May 25. A reference in writing from each student's department head or academic advisor must be sent to me separate from the application. Please make copies of this form as needed and distribute them to your best students and other faculty who have direct contact with undergraduate students. Award winners will be announced in late summer. Additional information available at www.ipps.org/southernNA.
