Financial Aid/VA will no longer be generating Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs attendance reports. To assist in getting FA checks disbursed quickly and to prevent FA and VA overpayments, please submit the following information via email (julie-ann.anderson at cpcc.edu) by Friday, June 8th, for any student in your class who hasn't attended or has stopped attending for the summer semester:

To eliminate FA students being billed and/or VA Students being in overpayment, it is imperative that the Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs Office receive notification of all "never attendees" and/or withdrawals as quickly as possible.
Changes in enrollment/attendance must be reported to prevent institutional liabilities. Throughout the semester, please continue forwarding the names for those students who have stopped attending or emailing the information to the Financial Aid Office and Veterans Affairs Office at julie-ann.anderson at cpcc.edu
According to federal regulations, Title IV funds and VA Educational Benefits are awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of Title IV funds that the student was originally scheduled to receive. If the amount disbursed to the student is greater than the amount the student earned, unearned funds must be returned to the U.S. Department of Education within 30 days after the student stopped attending.
The financial aid award is voided for students who never attended, and the student is billed for any tuition, fees and/or bookstore charges. For students who fail to receive at least one passing grade, a calculation is completed at the 50% point of the semester and the student is billed for Title IV funds not earned.

In an effort to ensure that College resources are used in a manner appropriate to the mission of the College, access to certain websites will be blocked for students, faculty, and staff. This initiative will also provide added benefits in bandwidth reduction and increased security.
It is recognized that some of the blocked sites may have academic value and a process is in place to allow for access to such sites on a per-semester basis with the approval of a Vice President or designated person.
Content filtering will be gradually phased in over the course of the next few weeks to ensure a smooth transition between the existing system and the new system. For more information, check out the Frequently Asked Questions below, call 704-330-6812, or email fran.lilly at cpcc.edu :
* Why is CPCC now blocking certain websites?
CPCC is now actively blocking certain websites in a good faith effort to promote the utilization of CPCC equipment in line with the mission of the college, increase the security posture of internal network computers, reducing the potential for litigation.
* What types of websites will be blocked?
Sites that are deemed by an independent, non-CPCC affiliated group, to be pornographic or of a strong adult nature, virus or spyware producers and gambling sites.
* What do I do if a site is blocked but is needed for my class?
Please inform your instructor or Dean and they will be able to whitelist sites on your behalf.
* What do I do if a site is blocked but I disagree that it is inappropriate?

Eventually, everyone with a network account will be filtered. Initially, a phased, but random, rollout will occur to evaluate and measure load.

Work begins June 11 to bring the College's underground utilities for HVAC and voice/data across Elizabeth Avenue at two locations. This project involves trenching, installing concrete ductbank underground, laying piping and conduit in the ductbank, backfilling the trenches, and repaving the sidewalk and roadway cuts.
The first stage of this 6-week project involves the area between Student Parking Deck 1 and Taylor Hall and the area between the Belk and Van Every buildings. Construction fencing will be erected on June 11 to enclose these areas for safety during construction. Limited space on the first floor of Student Parking Deck 1 will be closed to pedestrians and parking. This stage should be concluded in mid-July, weather permitting.
The final stage begins June 25 and involves trenching approximately one story beneath Elizabeth Avenue in two locations. The first location is near the crosswalk at Student Parking Deck 1. The other location is near the walkway between Sloan Morgan and Overcash. Elizabeth Avenue will be closed to vehicular traffic from Pease Lane to Charlottetowne Avenue (formerly Independence Boulevard) during this work. This part is scheduled to conclude before the start of Fall Semester 2007.
Sidewalks will be open on at least one side of Elizabeth Avenue throughout this project. Signage will be posted to alert pedestrians of detours. We thank you in advance for your patience and cooperation.

students with matters outside the classroom; participates in activities
which enhance the college's service to students and the community.
Teaches administrative and clinical courses in traditional and online
formats, and travel for clinical supervision. Associate's degree in a
health care discipline or diploma in Medical Assisting with minimum of
Associate Degree in a field which will complement program needs
required. Current CMA certification plus minimum of three (3) years
work experience in a physician's office or ambulatory care center.
Prefer minimum of two (2) years experience in clinical and/or classroom
instruction. Documented coursework (college courses, seminars, or
in-services) on topic such as learning theory, curriculum design, test
construction, teaching methodology, or assessment techniques preferred.

Instructor Welding, Position # 3WELDNG-FEF-6, REQ. #158.
The successful candidate for this position shall have, as a minimum, a
two year degree from an accredited institution with a concentration in
welding technology. The candidate should have a minimum of 5 years of
progressive experience working in the welding industry and have
"hands-on" knowledge in welding various metals using a variety of
welding processes such as SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, OFW, OFC, PAC, and should
have good blueprint reading skills. Documentation of current or past
certification in these welding processes is essential. AWS CWI/CWE
certification is a plus. The successful candidate should have strong
written and verbal communications skills, be PC literate, and enjoy
working with a diverse group of students. Prior experience in education
will be a definite plus. This position will require working a non
traditional schedule. The successful candidate will be located at Harper
Campus and will report to the Division Director, Applied Technologies.
This is a 10 month position. Student copies of all transcripts are

Executive Director, Theatre, Position # 6PRARTP-FEA-1, REQ, ID # 162.
The Executive Director, Theater is responsible for the financials,
operation, marketing/sales and client management of the newly
constructed Dale Halton Theatre, Art Gallery, Recital Hall and Lawn in
the Overcash Academic Performing Arts Center Building (in addition to
Pease Auditorium, Pease Art Gallery, Bryant Recital Hall and Sloan Lobby
area). This position will create a stabilized performance, conference
and social bases of business which creates revenue to fulfill the
college's community service goals and financial return requirements.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and minimum of three
(3) years experience in theatre management. Three (3) to five (5) years
of progressively responsible administrative experience, of which one
year shall have been in theatre management. Closing Date: Sunday, June

CPCC seeks an individual to serve as Records Management Specialist at
our Levine Campus. This Records Management Specialist position is

position at Gaston College and in her current position as Executive Vice
President at CPCC since 1994, she is responsible for the College's
financial, information technologies, and facilities management. Prior to
that, she spent four years in industry and ten years in various levels
of financial services for a private college.
CPCC has instituted many innovative means of revenue enhancement under
her direction, including the development of a 501(c) (3) Services
Corporation that funds entrepreneurial business ideas at the College.
Dr. Drumm also serves on the Board of CPCC's BizHub, a collaborative
effort with the city and county that promotes small business success
leading to economic development. As the key administrator over the
facilities of CPCC's six campuses, she has steered several local college
construction bond campaigns, all of which were successful and totaled
over $300 million.
Dr. Drumm's strong leadership, strategic thinking, and planning
abilities have served her well in a key position with the League for
Innovation in the Community College. As a National Association of
College and University Business Officers (NACUBO) member for nearly 30
years, Dr. Drumm exemplifies the ethical and professional standards of
those in business. Additionally, Dr. Drumm utilizes her business
abilities as a volunteer for several local organizations, including the
State Employees' Credit Union, her church, and the United Way.
While we are most fortunate to have Dr. Drumm at CPCC, she has earned
the respect of financial administrators and business leaders on a state
and national level, and she deserves this recognition as an influential
executive in the Charlotte area.
Dr. Drumm will be recognized for her accomplishments at the 11th Annual
Women in Business Achievement Award luncheon on Monday, July 16.

We are pleased to announce the availability of the GlaxoSmithKline
Teacher Preparation Scholarship/Loan Program for prospective teachers.
The GlaxoSmithKline Foundation, Inc., the N.C. General Assembly, and the
Bank of America have contributed more than $2 million to establish an
endowment within the N.C. Community College Foundation to support an
expanded role for North Carolina's community colleges in teacher
preparation. The endowment funds an annual grant program which provides
scholarships to prospective teachers who are enrolled in community
college degree programs tied to baccalaureate completion programs.
Scholarship awards for the 2007-2008 academic year will be awarded to a
limited number of students enrolled full-time in their first or second
year of a community college degree program. In addition, students must
be enrolled in a degree program that is transferable to a baccalaureate
degree in elementary or secondary education. The total award per student
will be $2,500 per semester for up to two consecutive semesters of full
time study. Recipients may reapply for a second year of funding. Each
scholarship recipient must sign a promissory note for each award which
will be forgiven as the teaching obligation is fulfilled. Applications
are available through the CPCC Financial Aid Website.
The application deadline is July 23, 2007.

The Financial Aid and Veterans Affairs Office is proud to announce the
"Mini-FAFSA Day" initiative beginning this coming Friday, June 22. The
Mini-FAFSA Day program will provide an opportunity for students to
complete their federal financial aid forms online and submit them in
time to be considered for a variety of college financial aid programs
for the upcoming 2007-2008 school year.
The event will be held every Friday beginning June 22 through August 17
between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. on the Central Campus in
the IT Building, Room 1118.
Participants in the Mini-FAFSA Day are strongly encouraged to do the
following prior to attending this event:
Bring student's and parents' federal 1040 tax forms for 2006 to the
FAFSA Day program.
1. Obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) prior to FAFSA Day
from the Department of Education PIN web site, (http://www.pin.ed.gov/)
2. Complete as much of the 2007-2008 FAFSA or FAFSA on the Web
Worksheet as possible and bring it with you on FAFSA Day.
Note: Don't worry if you don't know all the answers; experienced
financial aid staff will be on hand to assist you with the FAFSA at the
Mini-FAFSA Day.

College creates new position to focus on continuous improvement of
student intake
In order to enhance the overall student intake experience at CPCC, a new
Assistant to the Executive Vice President has been created. This
position will focus on the continuous improvement of the student intake
process. Dr. Maha Gingrich has been selected for this one-year
initiative, which will be reviewed for further need following the first
year. Mary-lynn Mitchell, Director of Communication and Quality
Assurance, and Stacey Brown, Communication and Quality Assurance
Specialist, will report to Dr. Gingrich and support the ongoing
continuous improvement process at the College.
The new position was created to provide a center of responsibility for
overseeing student intake, identifying areas of improvement, providing
recommendations, and coordinating implementation of those
recommendations. Some of the position responsibilities include:
* Review and become familiar with all student intake processes
including admissions, registration, counseling and faculty advising,
business office functions, technology services, financial aid, marketing
for registration, and course availability.
* Convene the cross-functional registration gear-up team and other
task forces as needed.
* Coordinate the implementation of recommended enhancements to
student intake and verify the completion of the recommendations,
including sources such as customer service solutions and student focus
groups.
* Periodically report progress to Cabinet, including budget
implications, new issues, and recommendations for additional
improvement.
* Act as the liaison to the vice presidents as well as all
departments involved in the student intake process.
* Continually seek and review student feedback and work with
quality assurance to make improvements.
Dr. Maha Gingrich was selected for this position as a result of her
experience with the College and broad knowledge of the various aspects
of student intake. Currently, Dr. Gingrich serves as Associate Dean for
the Central Campus. Since 1986, Dr. Gingrich has managed six divisions
and nearly 120 faculty and staff members. Over the past 20 years, she
has served as an Associate Dean for Library Services/Academic Learning
Center/Media Services on the Central Campus, an instructor for the Arts
and Communication Division, Director of the Information Center (Call
Center)/Adult High School/GED, as well as special projects coordinator
and an instructor of Computer Office Information Systems (IT). Dr.
Gingrich has been a tremendous asset to the College over the years and
will provide strong leadership in this position.
As in all of our new initiatives, inter-departmental cooperation will be
a critical component for success. Please join me in supporting Dr.
Gingrich in this new role.

Harris, and Central campuses and scheduling will likely include both day
and evening classes. The successful candidate must hold a master's

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Department will perform a test of the
underground water main on Thursday, June 21, 2007, from 4:00-5:00 p.m.

30-45 minutes.

Elizabeth Ave. construction beginning 6/25

Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) bus service to the CPCC Central
Campus will be re-routed beginning Monday, June 25, 2007. These changes
are necessitated by a CPCC construction project which will close
Elizabeth Ave. from its intersection with Charlottetowne Avenue
(formerly Independence Blvd.) to a point in front of the Central High
Building. This closure will take place on June 25 and continue until
early August.
CATS buses will detour around Elizabeth Ave. using 7th Street for
outbound trips, and either 7th or 4th for inbound trips. The inbound
stop on Elizabeth Ave. near the Terrell Building will be temporarily
relocated on Elizabeth Ave., on the uptown side of Kings Drive. The
outbound stop near Taylor Hall will be relocated to the existing bus
stop on Kings Drive beside the Central High Building.
These are the only changes affecting CATS for this construction
project-no additional bus stop signs will be put in place at any other
locations. Additional stops may be programmed in as a result of a
longer-term Elizabeth Ave. construction project planned by the City of
Charlotte.
Special Transportation Services (STS) buses will continue to use the
Pease Lane drop-off site. They will access that site by using the
driveway in front of Overcash and crossing over to Pease Lane. Anyone
needing to reach the Terrell Building parking lot would need to follow
the same access path. STS personnel have driven the route to ensure they
understand how to instruct their drivers.
Barricades will be erected on Elizabeth Ave. beginning the evening of
Sunday, June 24, 2007. Information on this project will be published in
The Charlotte Observer. In addition, several local TV stations will be
covering this story over the weekend.

In recognition of the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the
Survey of the Coast, The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(NOAA) and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service
(SITES) have created the exhibit "From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 Years of
Charting America's Coasts." CPCC is one of 200 venues nationwide to be a
part of this special celebration. The exhibit will be housed in Pease
Gallery from June 21-July 27, 2007. Gallery hours are 9:00 a.m. until
7:00 p.m., Monday-Thursday, and 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday
This exhibit celebrates the history, accomplishments and scientific
contributions of the nation's first science agency. The 20 colorful
posters are illustrated with photos, charts and artwork from the
Survey's archives.
CPCC is hosting a series of special presentations in conjunction with
the event. Employees attending any of the following events may receive

your MFP, please give us a call and we can get it done. For any other

Associate Dean of Central Campus, Position #3CENTDN-FEA-3, REQ. ID #175.
(internal only) This position is located on Central Campus. The
Associate Dean of Central Campus supports the responsibilities of the
office of the dean of Central Campus including program areas of
Hospitality Education, Health Sciences, Nursing, Human Services & Health
Education, Arts & Communication. In addition, the associate dean
supervises the Arts Festival coordinator, oversees artistic director of
Summer Theatre and executive director Theater; monitors and reconciles
revenue budgets for Summer Theatre, Winter Theatre, Opera, ArtsFest and
Halton Theaters. This position also serves as Central Campus liaison to
Security and Parking, monitors division projects, program reviews,
articulations and manages Campus Enhancement Funds. Master's degree in
management, adult education or related field from an accredited
institution; five (5) years experience in training or education; and a
minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience. Initially a one
(1) year assignment with potential for continuation. Closing Date:
Thursday, July 5, 2007.
Instructor Welding, Position #3WELDNG-FEF-6, REQ. ID #158. (reissued
6-26-2007). The successful candidate for this position shall have, as a
minimum, a two-year degree from an accredited institution with a
concentration in welding technology. The candidate should have a minimum
of 5 years of progressive experience working in the welding industry and
have "hands-on" knowledge in welding various metals using a variety of
welding processes such as SMAW, GTAW, GMAW, OFW, OFC, PAC, and should
have good blueprint reading skills. Documentation of current or past
certification in these welding processes is essential. AWS CWI/CWE
certification is a plus. The successful candidate should have strong
written and verbal communications skills, be PC literate, and enjoy
working with a diverse group of students. Prior experience in education
will be a definite plus. This position will require working a
nontraditional schedule. The successful candidate will be located at
Harper Campus and will report to the Division Director, Applied
Technologies. This is a 10-month position. Student copies of all
transcripts are required with the CPCC application for faculty
positions. Originals of all college transcripts are required at the date
of hire. Closing Date: Thursday, July 5, 2007.

The CPCC Libraries invite you to join us for a special lunch-n-learn
presentation by Rodney Jackson, Director of CPCC's Geospatial Technology
Education and Training Program, on the history of and uses of geospatial
technologies in responding to large-scale disasters, such as Hurricane
Katrina and 911. The session will be held on Wednesday, June 27, 2007,
from 1:00-2:00 p.m. in LRC404.
This workshop is one of a series being held in conjunction with the
Smithsonian and NOAA "From Sea to Shining Sea: 200 years of Charting
America's Coasts" poster exhibit. Additional presentations will be held
on July 11, 18, and 19.
The NOAA exhibit is being hosted by the CPCC Libraries and is on display
in Pease Gallery through July 27, 2007.

The current leave balances on WebEmployee
indicate:
Leave earned through June
And
Leave taken through May
June full-time timesheets must be submitted to Human Resources no later
than 5:00 p.m. July 5, 2007. If you will be on vacation next week, your
timesheet should be turned in to your supervisor before you leave in
order to comply with this deadline.
Ten-month faculty are not required to submit a timesheet for the months
of June and July.
Please be advised that for the month of June only, leave that was taken
in June will be entered manually and will be updated in WebEmployee as
soon as it is entered. Only leave accrued for the month will be
reflected on your July pay stub.
Timesheets may be scanned to Linda Anderson or faxed to 6066 if it is
not possible to have them dropped off or mailed to Human Resources by
the deadline.
It is not necessary to send originals if you choose to scan or fax
timesheets.

from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the CJ Student Lounge at North Campus. We
will convene to wish Rose the best in her retirement after 28 years of

She has touched every process and many students at the college and will
be tremendously missed.

Subject: [Cpcommunicator] BizHub Network to merge with CPCC Institute for
Entrepreneurship

The BizHub Network board of directors today announced it will merge its services with the CPCC Institute for Entrepreneurship. Located on the Central Campus, the nonprofit group will transition its support and informational services, including small business counseling, to the college effective July 1, 2007.
Established in 2003, the BizHub Network received its funding from founding partners CPCC, the City of Charlotte, and Mecklenburg County. The Charlotte Chamber and the Public Library of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County also played key support roles in the organization since its inception. The Institute for Entrepreneurship will seek support from the city and county to assist in counseling an increased number of clients as a result of the merger.
With its initial funding cycle nearing an end, the board took the opportunity to examine the structure and services of the BizHub Network, including a potential overlap in services, the cost of operating a separate entity and the capacity to raise self-sustaining funds. Lori Day, now serving in a part-time role as the Executive Director of BizHub Network, will help manage the merger and will direct the transition in her full-time capacity as Executive Director for the Institute for Entrepreneurship.
The existing BizHub Network hotline (704-330-OPEN) will be re-directed to the Institute for Entrepreneurship, and the website (www.bizhub.org ) will remain active during the transition. The regional calendar and free counseling information will be posted on the institute's site (www.cpcc.edu/e-institute).
With the merger, the Institute for Entrepreneurship will focus its counseling services on businesses and individuals in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County - the service area of the college. The institute now serves about 2,000 students a year through courses, seminars, counseling and visitors to its Resource Center. CPCC is a member of the Small Business Center Network (SBCN) of the N.C. Community College System. Other N.C. community colleges are a part of the SBCN and offer counseling and similar services throughout the region. Those individual colleges and many other service providers, including the Small Business Technology Development Center (SBTDC) and SBA, will continue to offer direct and local small business assistance.

As fall registration draws closer, Counseling Services will become
increasingly focused on assisting students in the enrollment process.
However, we also want to remind the College community that we are here
to assist students in crisis.
If you are speaking with a student who is in emotional distress or
experiencing a personal crisis, please refer him or her to the
Counseling Services office at the nearest campus. It may prove helpful
if you offer to initiate a phone call to us with the student present or
if you walk with the student to our office.
At the same time, please note:
* If a student is acting aggressively or violently, CPCC's
Security Office (ext. 6911) should be called immediately.
* If a student has made a threat against someone on campus, CPCC's
Security Office (ext. 6911) should be called immediately.
* A student who is not in crisis - but would still benefit from
speaking with someone about a personal concern - will be better served
after the schedule adjustment period has concluded.
All services provided through Counseling Services are free and
confidential.
