In collaboration with the College Foundation of N.C. and the N.C.
Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the CPCC Financial
Aid Department will be hosting a FAFSA Day 2007 on Saturday, February
17, 2007, from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the Levine Campus.
The event is designed to provide students with free assistance for
completing the Free Application for Financial Student Aid, or FAFSA. The
morning will include in-person and online help from financial aid
professionals and is open to any college-bound student, regardless of
their school.
The FAFSA Day Committee at CPCC is asking for volunteers to assist with
the event - greeting students upon arrival, assisting with refreshments,
and acting as runners between the student check-in and the financial aid
assistance. No financial aid experience is necessary and volunteers will
not be expected to give out financial aid information. Volunteers may
help with the entire event or just a portion, depending on their
schedule.
If you are interested in volunteering for the event, please contact
either Stephen Lancaster or Reggie Pincham by responding to this request
via email.
An orientation for all volunteers will be held on Friday, February 16,
2007, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in room LV2150 at the Levine Campus.
Thanks in advance for making this event a success!

Black History Month is celebrated annually during the month of February.
In recognition and celebration of this event, the CPCC Libraries are
partnering with the Diversity Committee, the CPCC Foundation, and
Student Life to bring you some exciting programs and activities
throughout the month of February. These programs have been designed to
promote knowledge of the history, cultural heritage, and contributions
Black people have made to America and elsewhere.
Our celebration of Black History Month will begin at 10:30 a.m. on
Wednesday, February 7, in Pease Auditorium with a live panel discussion
featuring legendary individuals: Mr. Harvey Gantt, Dr. Reginald
Hawkins, Mr. J. Charles Jones, and Ms. Fannie Watermann--all of whom
were involved in different aspects of the civil rights movement in North
and South Carolina. Our own president, Dr. Tony Zeiss will extend the
welcome.
We invite you to stop by the library to check out the African American
inventions and Charlotte-Rock Hill Sit-In Reunion exhibits. For all of
the "history buffs," there will be a weekly trivia challenge on African
American history. Prizes will be given away each week. To view the
detailed calendar of planned events, click here

Magic turns to mime.
Today's scheduled magicians' performance at 12:30 p.m. in SL 101 has
been canceled due to the inability of the European magicians to enter
the U.S.
Friday night, February 9, at 7:30 in Pease Auditorium will feature
Hardin Minor and Eddie Williams. These long-time Charlotteans are
leading artists and nationally known for their superior work in mime. As
Hardin might say, "Mime is an international language; it's for anyone"!
Hardin and Eddie have graciously agreed to step in at the last minute to
perform in a program that will be enjoyed by adults and children alike.
They will be magicial!
Through their civic good will, audiences who expected to be entertained
by the European magicians will not be dissappointed by this mime
performance.
A goodwill donation will be accepted to support the Farm Art Project
sponsored by the CPCC Art Department and taught by Elizabeth Ross.

To date, we have over 80 students who have registered to attend the
FAFSA Day event scheduled for this Saturday. With this in mind, the
FAFSA Day Committee is asking for volunteers to assist with the large
number of students planning to attend the event - greeting students upon
arrival, assisting with refreshments, and acting as runners between the
student check-in and the financial aid assistance.
No financial aid experience is necessary and volunteers will not be
expected to give out financial aid information. Volunteers may help with
the entire event or just a portion, depending on their schedule.
If you are interested in volunteering for the event, please contact
either Stephen Lancaster or Reggie Pincham by responding to this request
via email. An orientation for all volunteers will be held on Friday,
February 16, 2007, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in room LV2150 at the Levine
Campus.
Thanks in advance for making this event a success!

Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE0D5297@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Facilities Services
Do you want to help with the College's recycling efforts? The main
thrust of our recycling efforts is the paper and cardboard generated
primarily in offices. You can do your part by collecting paper and
cardboard in your office and then depositing it into larger collection
bins in common areas. If you need a small office bin or a larger bin in
your work/common rooms, call Facilities Services Help Desk at 6000.
Cardboard boxes are an item we would like to highlight. There are two
kinds. The first is those that are specifically used to assist us with
the many office moves the College makes. We reuse boxes until they are
no longer serviceable. (That's the second R in Reduce-Reuse-Recycle.)
Once you've emptied your moving boxes, stack them in a common area and
contact the Facilities Services Help Desk at 6000 to arrange for
maintenance to pick them up.
If you have empty boxes that you want housekeeping to pick up please
write RECYCLE on the boxes, because if nothing is written on the boxes
housekeeping is instructed to leave them where they are.
If you have any questions, please call 6000. You can look forward to
other recycling updates in the future.
Thank you.

Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE0D52A5@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Pat McDaniel
Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) is a global, nonprofit organization
active in more than 40 countries. SIFE - CPCC is currently seeking
students in all majors to participate in our chapter.
SIFE offers students the opportunity to apply what they are learning in
the classroom to solve real world problems. As the students go about the
process of organizing their team, developing educational projects, and
competing in national competition, they develop teamwork, leadership,
and communication skills.
Participation is open to and encouraged across a variety of majors.
Please identify one or two students who you believe would be good
candidates. We will contact them directly with additional information.
Please send their names to Nadine Russell, Eric Taylor, or Pat McDaniel.
Thank you for your assistance.

Subject: [Cpcommunicator] The CPCC Futures Institute Second Life Project
Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE0D52AB@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From D.I. von Briesen
The Futures Institute examines what is up-and-coming in our lives, particularly as it applies to education and the community college. We believe that three-dimensional, immersive environments provide a glimpse of the future of the World Wide Web. The Second Life project, started by The Futures Institute and initially funded by a CPCC Innovation Grant, provides us an environment within which we can pioneer this amazing new interface.
Last Friday, I led a short Second Life workshop, assisted by Jean Hardy and several others. We had a great turnout, and the feedback since then has been enthusiastic. You may have also noticed the article on this in last Saturday's Charlotte Observer. We plan to run weekly workshops and will be sending out announcements about this shortly.
Just as the web would be useless without web pages, Second Life will be useless to us without us in it. It may sound like a clich?, but it's the people that make the world, and it is turning out to be a very interesting world indeed. If you're interested, please read further. If not, thanks for listening!
I am looking for exploring, innovative, creative, and fearless folk--both faculty, staff AND students--to pioneer CPCC's presence in the 3D world. No covered wagons necessary--since you can fly there!
HOW WE MIGHT USE THIS
There are two primary areas for which Second Life will provide tremendous opportunity in education. The first is as another form of student interaction. Second Life can complement and in some cases even replace forms of communication we already use. It provides a sense of "being there" even though the people you are with may be on the other side of the world. A CPCC support center in Second Life could be staffed by one person on one campus, but be "present" for any student at any campus, or anywhere on the web.
The second area is that of building education exercises and scenarios. Because Second Life has a built-in 3-D modeling toolset that is surprisingly easy to use and because there are already MILLIONS of items created and available for use, it's relatively easy to set up real-life scenarios. Suppose you're an emergency first-responder and you need to re-create an accident, or scene of a crime? Imagine you're training to be a bank teller and want to actually stand behind the counter and have a line of customers? Second Life makes it easy to mock-up these situations and have teachers and students play alternate roles.
So if you are interested, shoot me a note, or better yet, go to www.secondlife.com and create a free account and then shoot me a note. I'll work with departments, groups, and individuals and look forward to working with YOU.
We will be scheduling open workshops in LearnerWeb. You can register at http://pd.cpcc.edu. The first is today, February 14, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in IT5122.
I'll also be holding real and virtual office hours from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesdays on the CPCC Campus Island, and in IT5121. You may drop in on Second Life or in-person as is convenient for you.
Thanks for your support!

>From Jerri Haigler
CPCC Theatre will hold auditions for Of Mice and Men on Monday, February
19, and Tuesday, February 20, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in Pease
Auditorium on Central Campus.
The production calls for nine men, one woman. All roles are open. Roles
range in age from 20 to 60+.
Two drifters with a dream of a better life are at the heart of John
Steinbeck's Of Mice and Men. A simple enough idea. But, oh so difficult
to achieve. CPCC Theatre is proud to bring this classic of the American
theatre to our stage this season. The great American dream has never
been so beautifully captured as in Of Mice and Men. George and his
friend Lenny just want a place of their own. But one mistake turns that
dream into a nightmare.
The auditions will consist of cold readings from the script. You do not
have to be a current CPCC student to participate. College credit is
available to those who qualify.
Rehearsals will begin mid-March 2007. Performances will be held on April
27, 28 and May 4, 5, 6, 2007. Director is James Duke.
We are also looking for people interested in working backstage as stage
manager, set crew, props, etc.

Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE0D52FC@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From ITS
In order to comply with N.C. State Information Technology Guidelines, a
new College policy regarding employee network accounts went into effect
last year on March 31, 2006.
This policy requires College employees to reset network account
passwords periodically to ensure the security of student and other data
residing on College information systems. New passwords must adhere to
security "best practices" listed in the Frequently Asked Questions
.
To avoid problems logging in to College computing resources, passwords
must be changed every six months.
You can change your password from any campus workstation by selecting -
Clt-Alt-Delete. This process will provide you the ability to change your
password. Passwords must match the security criteria
o Is at least 6 characters
o Has not been used in the previous 3 passwords
o Must not have been changed in the last 1 day
o Does not contain your account or full name
o Contains at least 3 of the following 4 character groups
* English uppercase characters (A through Z)
* English lowercase characters (a through z)
* Numerals (0 through 9)
* Non-alphabetic characters (such as !, $, or % - but please do
not use a \ (backslash) or a & (ampersand))
If you have not done so already, please take a moment to visit the CPCC
Account Manager (same as the
SNAP interface for students) to create your secret questions and
answers. We also ask that you review our Frequently Asked Questions
regarding the
password reset process.

their content, blogs can also be a great way to communicate with
students. In this session, Deanna Campbell, IT instructor and musician,
will talk about what makes blogs work and what doesn't.

During this cold and flu season, stop the spread of germs that make you
and others sick by following these simple rules:
* Cover your mouth. When you sneeze or cough, cough into your
upper sleeve, use tissues and discard properly, afterwards.
* Wash hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds,
clean with alcohol-based hand sanitizer:
* Clean hands after using the restroom, before you eat, before
touching your eyes, mouth, or nose.
* Keep a social distance of at least three feet.
* If you are sick, stay at home!
* Here are the most germ-ridden areas associated with your
workplace:
* Desks
* Phones
* Keyboards
* FAX and copy machines
* Door knobs
* Restrooms

>From Malik Rahman
Colleagues,
It is with mixed feelings of excitement and sense of loss that I share
the news of David Goble's leaving the College to accept an exciting job
opportunity in a neighboring state. David has successfully led Library
Services since September of 2002 and transformed it into an attractive
learning environment for our students, faculty and staff.
The college community is invited to join the Library and Information
Technology Services staff at a reception in his honor on Friday, March
2, from 1:00-2:30 p.m. in LRC 404 for wishing him a fond farewell and
good luck in his future endeavors.
Until we fill this key position, Jennifer Arnold will be the interim
head of college libraries, working with the dedicated group of
professionals who deliver library services to the college community.

spoken-word artist Rives, who has some unconventional ideas about how
the internet should be run.
