On Wednesday, August 8, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. in LR 205, CPCC
librarians will conduct a hands-on session to demonstrate the many
potential uses of Resources for College Libraries (RCL). RCL provides a
core list of titles (print and electronic) recommended for college
libraries serving undergraduates, and is one of the primary tools the
CPCC Library uses to make purchase decisions and build the library's
collection.
Come learn a new way to provide input into the development of the
library's collection for your program(s).
Don't forget to sign up in LearnerWeb for
professional development credit!

The Learning Unit is joining other units of the College during these
final days of registration to assist students. We are targeting days
when we expect the heaviest traffic, August 6-7 and August 13-17, 2007.
Registration is particularly high on Central Campus, but volunteers are
also needed at Cato, Harper, Harris, Levine, and North.
Volunteers are needed to answer general questions, direct students to
the appropriate office or individual, explain how to interpret the class
schedule, how to find open sections, and how to complete the
registration process. Volunteers are not asked to do program-specific
advisement.
Registration hours are 7:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. Please email Patricia
Williams to volunteer at Central Campus and email the campus dean to
volunteer at other campuses.

2007.
On July 30, 2007, legislation was passed to prevent this reduction in
sales tax. With this recent legislation, Mecklenburg County will

On Thursday, August 2, 2007, the water main on Elizabeth Avenue will be
shut-off from 6:00 p.m. to approximately 8:00 p.m. to allow a water main
tap on the City of Charlotte's water line. This shut-down will affect
the following buildings:
Belk, Van Every, Terrell, Central High, Overcash, Sloan-Morgan, Taylor
and the IT Building.
This work is needed to complete the Elizabeth Avenue Utility Project.

International Scholarship for the upcoming 2007-2008 school year.
Executive Women International is seeking to award a select number of
scholarships in the amount of $1,250 each to qualified applicants who
meet the following criteria:
Qualifications:
* Preference will be given to women.
* Must show financial need.
* Must maintain at least a "B" average.
* Must be in pursuit of a professional career in business.
* Must reside permanently in Gaston, Union, Stanley, Cabarrus,

Entering "WN" grades in WebEmployee
(A Quick Reference Guide)
Within 48 hours after the census date (10% date) for a class, a "WN"
grade must be posted to the grading screen in WebAdvisor for each
student who does not attend class by the 10% census date.
For fully online (IN) and Teleweb (TW) courses only: Print Bb or Moodle
statistics to support if the student has entered the course on or before

* From the WebEmployee Main Menu, select the "Faculty" link.
* On the WebAdvisor for Faculty Menu, select the "Grading" link.
* From the drop down menu, select the desired term.
* Click on submit.
* From the drop down menu on the Grading screen, select "Final"
grading.
* Choose one class.
* Click on submit.
* Enter a "WN" grade for each student in the class who did not
attend by the 10% census date. (No action is needed for students who do
not appear on the Grading screen.)
* Click on submit.
* To see that these grades were successfully posted, repeat the
above process for entering "WN" grades. After repeating the process,
you may print the grades that you have entered.
NOTE: To change "WN" to another grade --
A Grade Change Request Form must be sent to Student Records (any campus)
to change a "WN" grade once it is posted to the grading screen in
WebEmployee.

5:30 p.m. to approximately 9:30 p.m. to repair a leak on the existing

Due to the benefit changes and rate increases, the State Health Plan
will conduct a special fall enrollment to allow employees to switch
plans. Enrollment kits are being mailed to current plan participants
beginning August 7, 2007.
Employees who wish to make a change to their current plan must submit an
enrollment form to change no later than September 14, 2007.
No action is required for employees who do not wish to make a change
during the special enrollment period. Please refer to the Benefits
section of the Human
Resources' website for additional details.

Internal Applicant Posting
Infrastructure Analyst I, Position #2TELECM-FNC-5, REQ ID #195. This is
an entry level position focusing on root cause and system analysis as
needed by the Information Technology Services department in delivering
service and support to clients. Performs a variety of simple or routine
tasks required for the support of user and system requirements. This
position primarily provides first-level support to users although not
limited from working at other levels of the support model as needed.
Tasks may involve installing, configuring, troubleshooting and
maintaining user's hardware, software and network devices; implements
plan for new systems or processes and may assist in training of users;
assists users in formulating requirements and advises on alternatives
and implications; acts as a customer service advocate in resolving
service requests and arbitrates between systems and users when conflicts
arise; provides recommendations on optimizing standard processes as
related to customer service. Minimum qualifications are high school
diploma or GED and 30 hours of completed college-level coursework in
information technology from an accredited institution (associate's
degree and/or industry specific certification(s) preferred; and minimum
one (1) year of related work experience. Closing Date: Friday, August
17, 2007.

overrides (permissions)

Registration Services reminds all who perform registration overrides for
students in Colleague or WebAdvisor to pay close attention to the start
and end date of the override.
The start and end date of the override controls the length of time it is
in effect and available for the student's use.
Start Date:
* The student will NOT be able to register for the class until
the start date of the override.
* Please do NOT enter the first day of the term as the start
date. Enter the date on which the override should go into effect (become
active.)
* Normally that will be the date on which you enter the
override.
End Date:
* An end date should probably be included for all overrides.
* If an end date is NOT included:
* An override on a class (section) will be in effect for the
entire term.
* An override on a course will be in effect forever.

personnel for assistance; provides support for other Enrollment and
Student Services functions (Academic Learning Center, Career Services,
Disability Services, International Student Services, etc.) as assigned
by immediate supervisor; assists in the intake and coordination of
enrollment processes with the Student Success Center; organizes and
maintains testing files, administers placement and course tests;

Chris Buchanan, longtime employee and retiree, died on Thursday, August
9. She joined CPCC in 1969 and was executive secretary to Executive VP
N. Gayle Simmons. Chris was later executive secretary to Dr. Hagemeyer
and Dr. Shaw. Her husband, Bill, also worked at the College. Like many
others, she returned to work at the College in different capacities
after retiring.
Details about the memorial service will be tomorrow, August 11, at
Sharon Memorial Park. Details are in The Charlotte Observer obituary:

Group discounts are available to colleges sending nine or more
individuals to the Conference on Information Technology (CIT) sponsored
by the League for Innovation in the Community College. The conference is
scheduled for November 11-14, 2007, in Nashville, Tennessee.
To be eligible for the discount, all registration forms from each
institution must be sent in together.
Registrations submitted online are not eligible for the discount.
Professional Development will collect registration forms and submit them
to the league so that we can receive the discounted rate. Registration
forms should be sent to Debbie Bouton (PD303) by October 5, 2007. We
will also need the P-Card number to which the registration fee will be
charged. Please make your own hotel reservations. We will be
coordinating the registration process only. Please call Debbie (6796) or

educational materials to support instruction can be placed on reserve in
the Library. If you would like to have any library-owned or personal
materials (e.g., books, articles, audiovisual, etc.) placed on on
reserve for student use during the upcoming semester, we suggest that
you submit your request as soon as possible to allow sufficient time for
processing. Requests for reserve will be processed as soon as possible,
in the order received.

In an effort to better secure employee and CPCC proprietary information,
the Human Resources department and the ITS Web Development Team have
implemented a secure intranet site for certain information.
The new site will require employees to enter their network login
information in order to access forms, certain policy documents, and
certain contact information. The site is accessed by selecting links on
the regular HR website at http://www1.cpcc.edu/humanresources/ .
Since this is a pilot, some adjustments are being made to make the
transition as customer friendly as possible. We welcome your comments
and feedback!

Due to some unforeseen cirumstances, last night's scheduled maintenance
on the storage systems that house the H, J, U, and Z drives was not
completed.
In an effort to guarantee that the maintenance is completed before
tomorrow, ITS will be performing maintenance on the H, J, U, and Z drive
storage arrays today, August 17, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Before you leave for the day, please make sure you save and close any
documents that reside on these drives.

Subject: Advisory: Key Information for the Learning Managment System
As the start of the Fall Term has begun, ITS would like to take this
opportunity to remind faculty about several items with the College
Learning Management Systems (LMS).
The course copy feature will be unavailable starting at 12:00am on
Monday August 20. Limiting this feature allows for maximum system
performance, ensuring all students ease in accessing their courses for
the start of the Fall Term.
LMS Access for students, instructors, and teaching assistants should be
made through the College Registration System or Datatel. Instructors
should not manually enroll or create accounts within their course.
Instructors and Teaching Assistant access should be coordinate through
the respective program area. Instructor student accounts (-es accounts)
may be managed through the Course Administration Web Tools (CAW)
www.cpcc.edu/caw. Access for guest or non-CPCC affiliates should be
directed to the ITS Help Desk for assistance.
Courses will become available to students on the first official start
dates of the course. To verify the course date please visit the
Important Date Section in CAW.
Instructors are requested to review the Fall LMS Timeline for additional
key dates and information.

Subject: Advisory: Key Information for the Learning Managment System
As the start of the Fall Term has begun, ITS would like to take this
opportunity to remind faculty about several items with the College
Learning Management Systems (LMS).
The course copy feature will be unavailable starting at 12:00am on
Monday August 20. Limiting this feature allows for maximum system
performance, ensuring all students ease in accessing their courses for
the start of the Fall Term.
LMS Access for students, instructors, and teaching assistants should be
made through the College Registration System or Datatel. Instructors
should not manually enroll or create accounts within their course.
Instructors and Teaching Assistant access should be coordinate through
the respective program area. Instructor student accounts (-es accounts)
may be managed through the Course Administration Web Tools (CAW)
www.cpcc.edu/caw. Access for guest or non-CPCC affiliates should be
directed to the ITS Help Desk for assistance.
Courses will become available to students on the first official start
dates of the course. To verify the course date please visit the
Important Date Section in CAW.
Instructors are requested to review the Fall LMS Timeline for additional
key dates and information.

Subject: [Cpcommunicator] Welcome Back from the President

The fall registration process and first day of classes have gone well,
thanks to your commitment to our students. Preliminary numbers show that
registration is up. I want to thank all who have been involved in the
registration and counseling process. One of our top priorities is
providing students with the support they need in finding the right
program and registering for classes at CPCC. We all play a critical role
in ensuring success for our students.
As always, customer service is critical to everything we do at CPCC.
Whenever you see a student with a question, stop and ask if you can
help. The Information Booths scheduled at every campus this week are
vitally important to our new students, and I want to thank everyone who
volunteered to assist. I also want to thank those who volunteered to
assist with registration in the past few weeks.
At our Fall Forum, I shared some of what's new at CPCC this year. Here
are a few of the highlights:
* New programs - This year, we are excited to offer the new
Associate's degree in Non-Destructive Examination at the Harper Campus,
the new certificate in Motor Sports Technology, the new Succession
Management Program in CCE, the new partnerships with
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools including the Middle College Program at
Cato Campus and the new Construction Management Academy at Harper Campus
- just to name a few. CPCC is on the cutting-edge providing training
today for the careers of tomorrow.
* Emergency procedures and communication - Over the past few
months, we have been looking extensively at our All Hazards Emergency
Response Plan and our Crisis Communications Plan. Our goal is to seek to
provide a safe campus for our faculty, staff, and students. Please take
time with your students to review the new "What to Do in an Emergency"
card information that you received at the Fall Forum. I also encourage
you to refer to the website for additional information -

* 2007 Bond request - A $30 million bond request for CPCC is
slated to be on the November 6 ballot. This funding will provide for the
replacement of the Van Every building on Central Campus and renovations
to the Citizen's building on Central Campus. I hope you will take time
to learn more about the bonds and vote on November 6.
Thank you for the contributions you make on behalf of our students every
day. I'm excited about the new year and the opportunity to work with
you. I know this will be a year to remember for CPCC!

CCE Customer Service Coordinator position available in Corporate and
Continuing Education located at the Levine Campus in Matthews, NC, and
serves all CCE students. The Customer Service Coordinator provides
leadership and functional guidance to the Corporate and Continuing
Education (CCE) Customer Service staff by coordinating work, schedules
and training. Provides service to customers by telephone as needed. High
school diploma or GED plus training at postsecondary education level
equivalent to one full-time semester or a diploma or certification from
a technical or vocational school; two years of experience in a customer
service or call center environment and supervisory experience. Closing

Academic Advisor, Position #3CDVESL-FEP-1. REQ ID #188. The Academic
Advisor position available in Community Development location to be
determined. The Adult English as a Second Language program is an adult
English language program for immigrants who have limited English
proficiency. The program provides instruction for English language
learners to develop their English language literacy, life and work
skills in order to achieve greater self-sufficiency and participate in
American community life. The Academic Advisor conducts new student
orientations including placement testing, registration and referrals.
Bachelor's degree in education, psychology, sociology, human services,
history, communications, or counseling education from an accredited
institution and one (1) year of full-time experience related to academic
advising (or the equivalent in part-time experience). Must have strong
presentation skills and the ability to work well with individuals with
diverse backgrounds. Flexibility required. Closing Date: Friday, August
31, 2007.

Mrs. Gladys Brown, mother of JoAnn Murray and grandmother of Leran
Johnson, staff members in Admissions and Registration Services, passed
away at her Charlotte home on Sunday morning, August 19, 2007.
Visitation and services will be held Sunday, August 26, at Mt. Carmel
Baptist Church, 7237 Tuckaseegee Road, in Charlotte. Visitation will
begin at 1:30 p.m. And services will follow at 2:00. Alexander Funeral
Home is handling the arrangements.
Please join us in extending the sympathy of the CPCC family to Mrs.
Brown's family, and we hope that you will keep JoAnn and Leran in your
thoughts and prayers at this sad time. Condolences can be sent JoAnn

Entering "WN" grades in WebEmployee
(A Quick Reference Guide)
Within 48 hours after the census date (10% date) for a class, a "WN"
grade must be posted to the grading screen in WebAdvisor for each
student who does not attend class by the 10% census date.
For fully online (IN) and Teleweb (TW) courses only: Print Bb or Moodle
statistics to support if the student has entered the course on or before

Instructions for all classes:
Warning: Do not post any grades in WebEmployee before the 10% census
date because this will affect student refunds.
Note: You will be timed-out after 30 minutes on any screen. For security
reasons, do not leave your computer unattended while using WebEmployee.
* From the WebEmployee Main Menu select the "Faculty" link.
* On the WebAdvisor for Faculty Menu, select the "Grading" link.
* From the drop down menu, select the desired term.
* Click on submit.
* From the drop down menu on the Grading screen, select "Final"
grading.
* Choose one class.
* Click on submit.
* Enter a "WN" grade for each student in the class who did not
attend by the 10% census date. (No action is needed for students who do
not appear on the Grading screen.)
* Click on submit.
* To see that these grades were successfully posted, repeat the
above process for entering "WN" grades. After repeating the process,
you may print the grades that you have entered.
Note: To change "WN" to another grade --
A Grade Change Request Form must be sent to Student Records (any campus)
to change a "WN" grade once it is posted to the grading screen in
WebEmployee.

Student Tutor Assistant (PT) 2 positions, Position #3ECHDVC-HNC-1. This position is available at our Harris Campus and is part of our Early Childhood Education Program. A tutor is needed for English and reading, and a tutor is needed for math. Only CPCC students who have excelled in these areas need apply. Responsibilities include assisting with preparation for class assignments and tests, clarifying course materials, reinforcing course concept, reviewing/reinforcing course objectives, maintaining attendance records, regularly communicating with the instructor(s) of the course(s) about students' use of peer tutoring services and performing other duties as assigned. These temporary, part-time positions are funded via Smart Start Grant that provides contextualized courses in English and reading as well as math for identified students in the Early Childhood Education Program. Positions will provide 10 hours per week tutoring services for fall and spring semesters during academic year 2007-2008 on the Harris Campus. Financial Aid deadline 8/31

Financial Aid/VA will no longer be generating Financial Aid and Veterans
Affairs attendance reports. To assist in getting FA checks disbursed
quickly and to prevent FA and VA overpayments, please submit the
following information via email (julie-ann.anderson at cpcc.edu) by Friday,
August 31, for ANY student in your class who hasn't attended or has
stopped attending for the fall semester:
Name
Student ID#
Course and Section
Date student stopped attending
To assist you in the process, a Financial Aid Attendance Report form
is available at inside.cpcc. You may e-mail or fax the form (5053)
to our office.
To eliminate FA students being billed and/or VA students being in
overpayment, it is imperative that the Financial Aid and Veterans
Affairs Office receive notification of all "never attendees" and/or
withdrawals as quickly as possible.
Changes in enrollment/attendance must be reported to prevent
institutional liabilities. Throughout the semester, please continue
forwarding the names for those students who have stopped attending or
emailing the information to the Financial Aid Office and Veterans
Affairs Office at julie-ann.anderson at cpcc.edu
According to federal regulations, Title IV funds and VA Educational
Benefits are awarded to a student under the assumption that the student
will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is
awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible
for the full amount of Title IV funds that the student was originally
scheduled to receive. If the amount disbursed to the student is greater
than the amount the student earned, unearned funds must be returned to
the U.S. Department of Education within 30 days after the student
stopped attending.
The financial aid award is voided for students who never attended, and
the student is billed for any tuition, fees and/or bookstore charges.
For students who fail to receive at least one passing grade, a
calculation is completed at the 50% point of the semester and the
student is billed for Title IV funds not earned.
If you have any questions, please contact the Financial Aid and Veterans
Affairs Office at 6942.
