Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE1E6EC8@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Library Services
Amnesty Month begins today.
Today is the first day of amnesty month at the CPCC Libraries! So get
busy looking under your bed, in your closets, in the trunk of your car,
or any where you think you have overdue or lost library materials (e.g.
books, DVDs, videos, etc.) This is your chance to bring 'em back without
any questions being asked. What's even better is that outstanding fines
will be waived if the materials are returned in good condition. So how
does this work, you ask? It's simple. All you have to do is:
1. Return any overdue or lost library materials to any CPCC
library.
2. Bring in a canned good or other nonperishable food item, and
outstanding, unpaid fines from overdue items already returned will be
waived. This excludes lost materials. Replacement fees for damaged
materials will not be waived.
Library materials and food item donations will be received at all campus
libraries until April 30. Food contributions from students, faculty and
staff without current fines or overdue materials are also welcomed.
All food items collected will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank
of Metrolina, Charlotte.

ESS FAQ #2 Twelve Months of Residence
Q. Sometimes a student will ask what he can use to prove he's been here
a year so he can be a resident. What can I tell him?
A. The majority of our students are in-state residents, and it's
usually not difficult for them to prove that, but the widespread
understanding that simply being here 12 months makes one a resident for
tuition purposes can be somewhat misleading, actually. There are folks
who've been here for more than 12 months who do not qualify, and some
who've been here less than that who do. There are many, many factors
that go into residence classification - age, immigration status, reason
for being in the state and many others. The duration of residence is
only one part of the picture.
Of course, there's no particular document or set of documents that is
required of anyone. We can only suggest documents that we might be able
to use. Those include, but are not limited to, the N.C. driver's
license, N.C. tax returns, leases, utility bills, voter registration
cards, and so on. We're quite willing to review anything a student has
to bring to us to make a case. If that is insufficient, we will suggest
other options that may help. Additional information can be found online
at

I know everyone is very busy with the end of the semester rapidly
approaching.
This is just a reminder (in case you haven't done it yet) to complete
part 1 of the faculty-staff survey at the following URL:
http://surveys.cpcc.edu/45127/45127.htm
In order to improve what we do, we really need to receive feedback from
faculty and staff. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey.
For those who have already completed it, thank you. I hope you all have
a nice holiday weekend.

ESS Enrollment FAQ #3
Q. I'm a program chair and have a student who's been taking
classes in my area, and he wants to be admitted to our program of study.
Is there a way I can help him do that?
A. Yes, you certainly can do that. Use the Program
Admit/Change form available online to submit the student's request to
either:
* Ask that a student be admitted to a program
* Ask that an existing program be changed.
* Ask that a program be added.
The form can be found by clicking on the Faculty & Staff tab, clicking
on Instruction and then on Forms, or simply use the link below.
http://www1.cpcc.edu/instruction/forms/students/3106_progchange.pdf/view
The form is self-explanatory and confirms via your signature and that of
the student that you have appropriately advised the student and that
this is being done with his understanding and authorization. Please be
sure to remind the student of other applicable admissions requirements
such as:
* High school transcript with proof of graduation or
college transcripts showing an associate's or higher earned at an
accredited college
* A Transcript Evaluation Request form if applicable
* Placement testing.
After advising the student and completing the form, ask him to sign it,
sign it yourself (legibly, please!) and submit to the Admissions Office
at your campus. In most cases, the student will be provisionally
admitted within 24 hours or less after receiving the form. Per College
policy, he will need to provide proof of high school completion or of
having earned an associate's or higher before he can be officially
admitted. If you have questions about the form, the Admissions Office at
any campus will be happy to help you.

ESS Enrollment FAQ #4
Q: When we talk to students who're interesting in CPCC, they often ask
about financial aid and whether or not they should apply. What should we
tell them?
A: We hope that all students will be encouraged to apply for financial
aid. Financial aid assists students meet the costs of attending college
in many ways--grants, college work-study program, and/or scholarships.
In addition, there's something new this year. Students who previously
did not qualify for financial aid may qualify for the NC Educational
Lottery Scholarship. The best information for students and the College
can be found through the CPCC Financial Aid web pages at

Graduation 2007
Plans are underway for graduation ceremonies on Thursday, May 10, 2007,
at Cricket Arena, 2700 East Independence Boulevard. The Adult High
School/GED ceremony is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The College ceremony is
scheduled for 7:00 p.m. All CPCC faculty and staff and all guests will
need to go through a security check, so they should allow adequate time.
Participants and Volunteers
According to the full-time instructor job description, one of the
responsibilities of a full-time faculty member is to participate in
activities which enhance the College's service to students and to the
community. Participation in graduation ceremonies is one way faculty
meet this responsibility.
Because the College conducts only one graduation ceremony each year, all
faculty are expected to march in cap and gown in the ceremony unless
they are assisting with graduation as a member of the graduation
committee or as a volunteer or unless they are participating in or
assisting with the Adult High School/GED ceremony. If a faculty member
is unable to participate in the graduation ceremony, the faculty member
is expected to inform the division director. Exceptions to active
participation in the graduation ceremony will be handled on an
individual basis at the division level.
Mark Helms (6127) is coordinating volunteers for the College graduation
and Florence Patterson (6746) is coordinating volunteers for the Adult
High School/GED graduation.
Academic Regalia for Students
The Graduation Committee is charged with the responsibility of
developing guidelines to ensure a ceremony that is both orderly and
celebratory. For this reason, we have required graduates to wear the
traditional CPCC cap and gown if they wish to participate.
In order to make graduation go as smoothly as possible, the Graduation
Committee asks that any faculty advisor who wants an exception for the
graduates of a particular program explain the exception in writing and
send it to the Graduation Committee by April 16, 2007. The committee
will consider the request and respond.
The committee also asks that faculty and program advisors support the
position of the Graduation Committee by discouraging graduates from any
deviation of the approved academic regalia.
Academic Regalia for Faculty
All participants must wear academic regalia. Faculty are also reminded
to wear dark slacks or dresses and dark shoes. If faculty want to order
caps and gowns they can do so during Central Campus Bookstore hours.
Orders must be entered by April 20 to ensure delivery. Payment will be
taken when order is placed. If you have any questions please call Nancy
Fase at the Central Campus Bookstore.

Earth Day Celebrations at CPCC begin today!
An Inconvenient Truth has generated great attention both in our country
and around the world. Roger Ebert wrote, "I have only once in my almost
40 years as a film critic written these words: 'You owe it to yourself
to see this film.'"
We are proud to begin our Earth Day Celebrations at CPCC with a
screening of the Academy Award-winning documentary An Inconvenient
Truth.
This screening will take place in the Levine Auditorium (Room 2150) on
Tuesday, April 10, at 10:00 a.m.
On Thursday, April 12, Diane Frederick, a nationally trained volunteer
with Al Gore's "The Climate Project," will be on Central Campus from
11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in LRC 404 to deliver her slideshow
presentation on global warming. Learn about what we're doing to our
Earth and small things we can do to help make a change. A light lunch
will be served.
If you didn't make the Levine screening of An Inconvenient Truth, you
have another chance! On Monday, April 16, An Inconvenient Truth will be
showing at Harper Campus throughout the day in the Student Lounge (Room
341) with the first screening beginning at 10:00 a.m.

knowledge of budget and college systems at the American Academy of

>From Terri Manning
Greetings to all CPCC full- and part-time faculty and staff,
I want to thank everyone who participated in the first part of the
annual faculty/staff survey. We had well over 300 responses, which is
pretty good. I mentioned in my first email that this was a two-part
survey, so here is the link to the second part:
http://surveys.cpcc.edu/22536/22536.htm
This survey in shorter and contains questions about Facilities
(maintenance and management), Distribution Services (shipping/mail
room), Compliance & Audit, Health and Safety, EEO, Basic Skills
Compliance, Inventory Control, Security and the CPCC Foundation. These
units really want feedback from all of you so they can better serve the
college, its staff and its students.
I thank you in advance for your participation in this important piece of
our IE processes.

Service opportunities during our Earth Day Celebrations provide you the
chance to take action on environmental issues!
On Tuesday, April 17, a group will gather at the Levine Front
Information Desk at 11:30 a.m. for the Adopt-a-Street program. Please
join this effort to clean the roads around Levine and encourage your
students to help also. Students who have participated in the past have
promised never to throw litter from their vehicles again!
Saturday, April 21, has been selected as National and Global Youth
Service Day (NGYSD). On this day, youth across the world will
participate in a variety of service projects. You can join this global
effort right here at CPCC! CPCC's NGYSD activities will span three
campuses and include seven project sites. At each campus, students will
work on Phase I of Campus Wildlife Habitat areas by preparing designated
areas and planting vegetation to attract wildlife. Creek cleanups on
Little Sugar Creek and Irwin Creek, near Central and Levine campuses,
will beautify our county's waterways and reduce water pollution.
Finally, students working along the Little Sugar Creek Greenway will
create a new garden.

Emergency Response Plan
Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE1E6FBC@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Jerri Haigler
In light of the recent tragedy at Virginia Tech, CPCC employees are
reminded of the College's All Hazards Emergency Response Plan. The new
emergency services website at www.cpcc.edu/emergency-services includes
the entire all hazards emergency response plan, evacuation plans for
each campus, information on the building captain program, and much more.
In addition, the crisis communications plan is outlined in the all
hazards plan.
In the event of an emergency, information would be emailed to all
employees and students, posted on the CPCC website, and included on CPCC
TV.
College officials are continuously reviewing the Emergency Response Plan
to ensure that it provides the greatest amount of security possible for
our students and employees. Instructors are asked to share this
information with their students.
The entire CPCC family extends its deepest heartfelt sympathy to the
families of the victims at Virginia Tech. Please take time to remember
the students, faculty, and staff in your thoughts and prayers at this
extremely difficult time.

Subject: [Cpcommunicator] ADVISORY for users of Report to Web software
Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE1E6FBE@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From ITS
Effective Wednesday morning -April 18, 2007
To the users of the Report to Web software: we are proud to announce
that the latest version of the software will be available for use. What
follows are some of the changes, improvements and, for some users,
exceptions.
Changes:
A new web address is required to access the application. Click here to
access the application: http://webreports.cpcc.edu/report.web. We will
be asking Network Services to setup a redirection path to the new web
site using the REPORTS.CPCC.EDU address. We will notify users via a
broadcast email when this is completed. Until the redirection is set up
and users are notified, use the new address.
The user and password are now the same as your network user and
password.
Instead of closing the web page as you did in the past, there is the
ability to logoff from the system. (See the upper right corner of the
screen).
The first time you view a report you will be asked to accept a security
certificate. Click the Always Trust button. You need to do this ONLY ONE
TIME.
Users of the Singularity software will no longer have to set/unset the
Java (Sun) option in the advanced section of Internet Options. The flag
should be set on and left that way.
Improvements:
The Report to Web application has been loaded on a new and faster
server. Users should notice a significant improvement in the display of
reports.
Those users who pull spreadsheets can now just click on the report
(without having to save to your PC) and the spreadsheet will come up on
your PC.
The ability to customize the look of the Report Folder display is now
available. Click on View Preferences for the options.
Exceptions:
Users attempting to view Mainframe (Legacy) reports may receive the
following error message:
Too many published reports to list.
The list of published reports you are trying to access exceeds the
maximum number of published reports that may be requested at one time.
Please use the Search function to find the published reports you are
looking for.
This error will primarily occur when trying to view Cashiering reports.
Use the Search function to specify the report name and a date range.
Current users of Report to Web should find positive changes in the new
version of the software and have little difficulty adjusting to the new
format.
There are still a few lingering security issues to be worked out -
please call ITS if your access has changed
Whom to Contact:
Anyone having trouble logging on to the application and/or viewing
reports should contact the ITS Helpdesk at 5000.

The student and alumni club of the TRiO-SSS program is holding a raffle
of several really nice gifts during the International Spring Fest
Wednesday, April 18, on Central Campus.
Stop by our table and take a chance on either an arts and craft basket,
school supplies featuring a 512 MB flash drive, or a floral arrangement.
All proceeds go to the TRiO-SSS 20th anniversary celebration in June
2007.

Thanks to the dozens of students, faculty, and staff who have already
volunteered to help with the Skyline Run on Saturday, April 21, 2007. We
still need help primarily with two areas: intersection monitors to stand
at an intersection along the route to keep traffic from entering while
runners are passing, and volunteers to hand out water to runners along
the route and pick up litter that runners may have dropped.
If you can donate two hours from 8:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m., please email

Graduation cap and gown:
A quick reminder that Herff Jones will be taking orders for all cap and
gowns at the CPCC Majors Bookstore today and tomorrow (April 18 and 19).
All attending faculty members are encouraged to place orders as soon as
possible to allow enough time to receive and fit their graduation
regalia. Students will be able to pick up cap and gown at time of
purchase.
The CPCC Majors bookstore also offers graduation announcements, diploma
frames, greeting cards, and many assorted graduation gifts.
Adoptions due date reminder:
For our students to receive the most for their text at buyback, the
bookstore must have a book adoption for that title.
* Summer adoption due date: March 15
* Fall adoption due date: April 16
Please help us serve our students better by turning in all remaining
fall adoptions before finals week!
Textbook buyback starts now!
Looking for ways to save on textbook costs?
The single best way for students to save money on textbooks is through
buying used books. Your CPCC Bookstores buy text back everyday...in fact
we offer up to 50% back on your text after students are done with them!
The CPCC Bookstores offer the most at buyback so that we can have the
largest selection of used books for our students next semester. Buyback
benefits the student who sells a book, the student who can then purchase
that book used and even the environment through recycling! Keep the
cycle going...please encourage students to sell back books!
A word about Guaranteed Buyback:
CPCC Bookstores offer Guaranteed Buyback on many of the most popular
titles required for classes at CPCC. Guaranteed Buyback means that your
students are guaranteed to receive 50% of the purchase price back on
titles with the Guaranteed Buyback sticker! We are committed to saving
students money through used books. Look for the Guaranteed Buyback
sticker when you purchase new or used books at your campus bookstore!

If you are in need of assistance with submitting the FAFSA via the
internet for the upcoming 2007-2008 school year, today is your day!
In collaboration with the College Foundation of N.C., the N.C. Community
College System and College Goal Sunday, the CPCC Financial Aid
Department will be hosting an additional FAFSA Day today, April 19, from
1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on the Central Campus in Central High, Room 323.
This additional spring FAFSA Day will provide an opportunity for
students to complete their federal financial aid forms online and submit
them in time to be considered for a variety of College financial aid
programs for the upcoming 2007-2008 school year.
Participants are strongly encouraged to do the following prior to
attending this event:
1. Bring student's and parents' federal 1040 tax forms for 2006 to
the FAFSA Day program.
2. Obtain a Personal Identification Number (PIN) prior to FAFSA Day
from the Department of Education PIN web site, (http://www.pin.ed.gov/)
3. Complete as much of the 2007-2008 FAFSA or FAFSA on the Web
Worksheet as possible and bring it with you on FAFSA Day.
Note: Don't worry if you don't know all the answers; experienced
financial aid staff will be on hand to assist you with the FAFSA on
FAFSA Day. Students interested in completing the FAFSA on the Web
Worksheet for 2007-08 can access copies of this form at
(http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/)

counseling
Message-ID: <0FE9B5355B63894FAB7FC320CBCD94AE1E6FFD@CEVS7-CENTRAL.cpcc.edu>
>From Kirk Knott, student counselor
In light of the tragic events at Virginia Tech this week, we at
Counseling and Advising would like to remind the college community that
we are here to assist students who may be having difficulty coping.
Following a senseless and traumatic event like this, some students may
experience a variation of a normal stress reaction. Symptoms such as
difficulty concentrating, deep sadness, anxiety and depression, or sleep
difficulties can be triggered, especially with the large amount of media
coverage. If these reactions occur, it's important for students to talk
to someone they trust about their feelings and a good idea for them to
seek professional help if the feelings persist.
Students who are experiencing distress can seek assistance or be
referred to Counseling and Advising at the campus locations listed
below:
* Central Campus: Central High Building Room 212, 704.330.6433,
704.330.5013
* Levine Campus: Main Reception, 704
