Watch your email for information on e-Way online pledging and for more information about United Way. If you would prefer to receive a paper pledge form, please contact a committee member who can provide one for you. This year's United Way Committee (Amanda Capobianchi, Frank Granger and Keith Beam) would like to thank you for your past and continued support. Because of your donations last year, we were able to exceed our goal, raising over $32,000. This year we look for continued success and aim to raise $35,000. Through United Way's Community Care Fund, local help agencies address critical needs by assisting people in our community who need it the most: our children, our families, and our older adults. United Way's impact touches one out of every three people in our community, and it doesn't take much to remind us that many of these people are the students we serve every day. Thank you for continuing to play an important part in making a real difference in our community at CPCC. However, to ensure each student has a thorough understanding of the importance of the placement tests, and to avoid possible confusion regarding our schedule, students should visit the Testing Center website for current testing hours and related information about the CPTs, including the online study guide, before visiting the Central Campus Testing Center. For testing hours at the other campuses, students should contact each campus directly. Key reminders for students before taking the placement tests: 1) The admissions application must be on file in Colleague. 2) Review online practice tests and test taking strategies. 3) Make sure the Testing Center's schedule has not changed. During regular semester hours, students may take the placement tests anytime from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and from 8:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Friday. Hours will vary during break periods. 4) Plan on testing at a time when you are at your mental and physical best. 5) Permission to retest is not automatic. In order to retest, current College policy requires students to either take and pass the recommended developmental course with an A or B, or wait one (1) year. Any exceptions require permission from the English or math division directors. Thanks for your assistance in keeping our students informed. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Legislature, annual compensation increases for 2006-2007 are at an all-time high. At the Fall Forum, I shared with you that the N.C. Legislature had approved a 6% increase for full-time professional staff and faculty as well as a one-time 2% bonus. I am equally as pleased to announce that the CPCC Board of Trustees will be providing this increase and one-time bonus to ALL full-time CPCC employees who were employed as of June 30, 2006. At CPCC, we value each and every employee of the College and have made every effort in the past to ensure that increases and bonuses are provided across the board. Other compensation increases for 2006-2007 include the following: * A $50 increase for part-time instructional contracts will be awarded this year. A three credit hour contract will be increased from $1,600 to $1,650 effective with the 2007 spring term contracts. * Part-time hourly employees will receive a 3% increase beginning with the October 2006 pay date for hours worked in September 2006. A part-time hourly employee is eligible for this increase if (a) the employee was employed at CPCC during May or June 2006 and (b) the employee is issued a part-time hourly contract for 2006-2007. The compensation increases will be included in the September 2006 full-time pay and retroactive to July 1, 2006. Individuals must also be employed during September to be eligible for the payment of the compensation increase. The 2% bonus will be computed on the June 30, 2006, base pay with a planned pay out as a part of the September full-time pay. For ten-month faculty positions, the salary increase will commence on August 1, 2006, which is the beginning of the 10-month faculty contract period for the 2006-2007 fiscal year. Offering this increase across the board to all employees comes as a result of the funds the College received by being named a "superior performing institution" by the N.C. Community College system. Our College met 10 of the 12 total measures last year, and we hope to achieve all 12 this year. I want to commend you on a job well done. I can't remember a time when I've been more proud of this institution and our outstanding faculty and staff. Each day, you give 100 percent to our students to ensure they receive a successful learning experience. Thank you for what you do each and every day for our students. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This number reflects the state employees, teachers, retirees and dependents who chose the NC SmartChoice Blue OptionsSM PPO plans, effective October 1, 2006. "The PPO will save N.C. taxpayers more than $25 million dollars from October 1, 2006 through October 1, 2007. Most State Health Plan PPO members and their families will also realize notable health care savings," said Executive Administrator George C. Stokes. "As requested by members, the PPO enables the State Health Plan to deliver on its promise of improved affordability and choice." The total State Health Plan budget for the current fiscal year is approximately $2 billion. Director of Network Operations Chris Evans emphasized that "based on the enthusiastic response to expanded choice and increased affordability during this initial enrollment, it's very likely that we will see a larger percentage of our members in the PPO after the next annual enrollment." PPO plans contract with various physicians, hospitals and other providers to form medical care networks. For the State Health Plan, NC SmartChoice Blue OptionsSM PPO members will receive services at lower premiums and reduced out-of-pocket costs when they use in-network providers. Members decide when to visit a specialist and whether to select a provider from in-network or out-of-network. They may also use out-of-network providers at a reduced benefit. Physician referrals are not required. Other features of the State Health Plan's new PPO include: * A new Employee-Spouse tier, in addition to existing tiers * Reduced premiums for dependent coverage * Network availability in all 100 N.C. counties * No deductibles or coinsurance for non-hospital based physician's office visits -- only co-pays (in-network) In late February of this year, the Plan's Board of Trustees, in consultation with the Committee on Employee Hospital and Medical Benefits (a legislative oversight committee), approved a PPO contract with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina to provide the physician and hospital network to the State Health Plan. The PPO was offered for the first time, along with the current indemnity plan, during the 2006 open enrollment. A full breakdown of PPO membership will be available once members are officially switched to the PPO from the indemnity plan on October 1, 2006. Additional details will be released by the N.C. State Health Plan after October 1, 2006. About NCSHP: Prior to offering the new PPO plans during the recent open enrollment, the N.C. State Health Plan covered more than 590,000 teachers, state employees, retirees, current and former lawmakers, state university and community college personnel, state hospital staff and their dependents on the indemnity plan. A breakdown of that total includes: More than 340,000 active employees; 144,000 dependents and non-Medicare retirees; and more than 93,000 retirees and their dependents, with one or more members covered primarily by Medicare. Dependents include spouses and unmarried children under age 19 (or under age 26 if full-time students). The State Health Plan is self-insured and exempt from ERISA as a government-sponsored plan. Visit the State Health Plan Web site at www.shpnc.org for more information about the NC SmartChoice Blue OptionsSM PPO Plans and NC HealthSmart, a healthy living initiative available to members at no additional cost. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... As recently announced, procedures have been changed so that postage will now be directly charged to accounts, eliminating the need for BOs (blanket orders) from July through February. As the College enters its year-end closing process in March of each year, BOs will be required to ensure sufficient funds remain in budgets to cover all anticipated expenses. Financial Services is handling the deletion of BOs that had already been set up for the entire fiscal year. Instructions will be provided as the year-end closing process begins to remind you of the need for BOs from March through May. As always, June postage charges are assessed against the following year's budget. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Timothy, 13, nearly lost his life to the streets. He watched his brothers, cousins, and nephews turn to violence and drugs to make the quick, easy dollar. Until Right Moves for Youth - a United Way agency - came into his life, he was headed down the same destructive path. He was skipping school and saw no point in getting an education. But after being referred to the Right Moves for Youth club at his school and becoming a member, he soon learned there was an alternate path, one more positive and productive. After becoming involved in the Right Moves for Youth curriculum and participating in a variety of community service projects, Timothy acquired self-esteem and the coping skills he needed to avoid the violent lifestyle to which he had become accustomed. Today, he is a smart, well-behaved student who has taken on leadership roles in both his club and school. Timothy now dreams of attending college and becoming a teacher. CPCC's United Way Campaign runs through October 20. Last week employees should have received information from United Way about making an online pledge. If you did not receive this information, or if you would prefer to donate through a traditional paper pledge, please contact Amanda Capobianchi, Frank Granger and/or Keith Beam. The process enables departments to enter their requests through our on-line technology planning application starting Wednesday, September 13, through Friday, September 29. ITS staff will schedule meetings with department and division heads from October 2 through mid-October to review all needs identified through this process. Department heads are requested to enter their technology requirements at Submit Your Requests and Review Requests Submitted by their Department . Faculty are welcome to provide their input through this process. Requests entered by 5:00 p.m. on September 29, 2006, will be considered in this fiscal year's plans. Requests entered beyond that date will be reviewed subject to availability of funds. Please review the following information before submitting technology requests: Items to consider for inclusion in your requests: 1. Computer needs for expansion of existing facilities e.g. new labs, classrooms. 2. Hardware and/or software for new projects and initiatives. 3. Volume licensing needs for software. 4. Big ticket items. 5. Smart Classrooms. Items to exclude: 1. Any item costing less than $500: The state considers such items 'supplies'. Equipment funds cannot be used for these items so they should be acquired using departmental supply budgets. (Items between $500-$999 are considered 'minor equipment' and those above $1,000 are classified as 'equipment'.) 2. Replacement of existing desktop/laptop computer and projector equipment: All computers and projectors are on a prescribed refresh cycle depending upon changes in technology and functional requirements. 3. High speed laser printers: Two trends in this area have driven our approach. Personal printers have become more affordable (<$500). These are often not worth repair and should be replaced with new ones when they become defective. High speed printers have converged with copiers and scanners into multi-function devices. The College is acquiring these multi-function devices for placement in almost every office cluster as existing equipment is replaced. Scanning will be at no cost but printing and copying will be subject to chargeback by College Services. The College will also be moving all network printers to the Staff Print Accounting System by the end of the year. Departments are encouraged to keep this in mind during the budget preparation cycle. 4. Equipment for new positions: This is already included in equipment planning. Please note that new employees filling an existing or vacant position normally inherit offices and equipment that was in use by the previous person in the position. Departments are asked to place a new position equipment request at the start of the hiring process. 5. Portable projectors and laptops: Most requests for laptops and portable projectors are addressed by increasing the number of laptops and projectors available for short-term checkout through the library. Existing devices in the libraries and departments will be on an upgrade cycle. 6. Peripherals: Departments are requested to acquire peripherals like CD or DVD burners, DVD drives, scanners, LCD monitors, additional computer memory, digital cameras and desktop printers using their supplies budgets. ITS web site lists recommended products, recent prices and vendors for these items. For assistance with this process, please contact the ITS Help Desk at 704.330.5000. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Our series begins today with the following questions: Q: I have a list of students to advise, but I don't know how they were assigned to me. What process do students go through to get a faculty advisor? A: Here's how the process works for students. Students who have never attended college before start by completing the admissions application and then taking the placement tests. After testing, they meet with an academic advisor in Counseling and Advisement Services to discuss educational goals and strategies for success, and then select courses for the first semester. Academic advisors assign a faculty advisor based on the student's program of study during this meeting. Students are advised to contact their faculty advisor when it is time to select courses for all subsequent semesters.* The process is slightly different for students who are transferring to CPCC from other schools. Transfer students apply for admission, turn in transcripts from their previous schools, request transfer credit evaluation at Student Records, and then make an appointment to meet with a student counselor. During this session, the student counselor discusses educational goals and strategies for success. After reviewing transfer credit to determine if placement tests are required, the student counselor explains how previous credit will apply to CPCC programs. A faculty advisor is assigned during this session based on the student's program of study. Depending on how much transfer credit the student has, the student counselor may recommend courses for the first semester or may refer the student immediately to his or her faculty advisor for course recommendations. Students are advised to contact their faculty advisor when it is time to select courses for subsequent semesters.* * Students in A.A.S. programs work with their faculty advisors until graduation. Students in college transfer programs work with faculty advisors until they have completed 30 hours. After 30 hours, they work with academic advisors in the Transfer Resource Center. Q: Has the administrative process of assigning faculty advisors changed since the conversion to Datatel? A: Yes. In the legacy computer system, counselors and advisors could view a list of faculty advisors for each program code and see the number of advisees assigned to each person. There is no equivalent to this screen in Datatel. Instead, academic advisors and student counselors refer to printed lists of faculty advisors by division to match up students with appropriate faculty advisors. Equitable distribution of advisees is difficult since there is no "master list" that shows how many advisees are assigned to individual faculty members. The College is looking for ways to improve this process. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A: Student counselors at CPCC are available to serve as a resource to faculty and staff who are looking for ways to help students reach their goals. We also welcome the opportunity to speak with you about our department's services or to help connect you with other services in the community if they are a better match for the student's need. Student counselors are available for any student who needs assistance. If a student is in an immediate crisis, follow the guidelines at the bottom of this message. In non-crisis situations, it is the student's responsibility to seek help, and as an instructor, advisor, or mentor, you can encourage them in any of the following ways: * Speak to the student about your concern for him or her. (See suggested phrases below for initiating the conversation.) * Let the student know that free, confidential counseling is available on campus. * Discuss the benefits of speaking with a counselor with the student. * Walk with the student to the counseling office to make an appointment. * Make regular announcements in your class about services provided on campus. * Download a handout or information leaflet from Counseling's Online Help Center and share it with the student. Instructors in developmental courses for Title III students can make referrals to counseling using the Online Student Profile. Expanded use of the Online Student Profile in future semesters will increase access to this online tool for faculty. Suggested Phrases for Referring a Student to Counseling Services * I'm concerned about you * I want to offer you the support you need to do well/succeed * I see great potential in you * It seems like something is standing in your way * Many resources are available * Your (grades, absences, other) in my class have caught my attention * Perhaps talking to someone would help * How can I help you be more successful? * What steps would help you understand what this course is requiring? * I can help you get in touch with a counselor on campus. If a student is in crisis... * If a student is an immediate danger to him/herself or others or is behaving irrationally, call Campus Security at 704.330.6911. * If the student in crisis is able to communicate with you about what is happening, he/she can meet with a counselor without an appointment. If you are a faculty or staff member who is with a student at such a time, you are encouraged to do the following: 1. Listen to the student's concern or complaint. 2. Express concern for the student. 3. Speak calmly yet firmly to the student and assure him/her that CPCC has people who are ready to help. 4. Let the student know that you would like to get him/her connected with a student counselor. 5. Assure him/her that the services are confidential and free. 6. When possible, phone Counseling Services on your campus. a. Identify yourself to the person answering. b. Tell him/her that you are with a student who needs to see a counselor about a personal concern right away. (Be sure to clarify that this is not an academic matter.) c. Let him/her know that you (or someone from your area) will be walking the student to Counseling Services. 7. Walk with the student to Counseling Services. Identify yourself to the front desk staff member as the person who called earlier. 8. Stay with the student until he/she is greeted by a counselor. * Out of respect for the student's privacy, please be aware that Counseling Services will not be able to discuss the outcome of the student's meeting with a counselor. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Sherry's mother was a single parent trying to make ends meet and had her own issues with an addiction to crack cocaine. Often, Sherry was put "in charge" of two younger siblings when her mother left for days at a time. After awhile, Sherry and her siblings were removed from their mother's care and placed in a number of foster homes. Unfortunately, Sherry's behavior became problematic, as she began to act out violently, engage in risky behavior and experience hallucinations. Fortunately, Sherry and her mom were referred to The Family Center, a United Way agency that provides treatment, programs and family support services for those dealing with child abuse and neglect. At the Family Center, Sherry and her mother received therapeutic counseling and her mother got help for her addiction. In addition, the entire family received In-Home Family Education. Today, after plenty of hard work, the family is reunited. Sherry has made great progress and is an honor roll student. CPCC's United Way Campaign runs through October 20. Employees should have received information from United Way about making an online pledge. If you did not receive this information, or if you would prefer to donate through a traditional paper pledge, please contact Amanda Capobianchi, Frank Granger and/or Keith Beam. A: The ACCUPLACER measures students' abilities in four subjects: sentence skills, reading comprehension, arithmetic, and algebra. Test scores in these subjects determine a student's placement into developmental or college-level courses based on the cut scores in the chart below. The sentence skills test determines placement into ENG 080 and ENG 090/ 090A. The reading comprehension test determines placement into ABE Reading, RED 080 and RED 090. Before enrolling in ENG 111, students must meet the prerequisites in both English and reading. These prerequisites can be met with test scores, with developmental courses (ENG 090/090A and RED 090), or with a combination of both. The arithmetic test determines placement in ABE Math, MAT 050, 060, or 070. The algebra test is used for placement into MAT 080 as well as college level math courses. Students frequently ask to retake the placement test; however, retest permission is granted only in the following circumstances: * The student's test scores are more than one year old, and he/she is not enrolled in developmental courses. * The student has completed a developmental course with an "A" or "B" and wishes to test out of the next developmental course. Contact Division Directors for retest permission: Karen Williams (English and Reading) or Suzanne Williams (Math). * The student has completed Adult Basic Education (ABE) Math. Contact Suzanne Williams for retest permission. * Extenuating circumstances during the test administration affected the student's score. In this rare instance, retest permission is given at the discretion of the Division Directors listed above. Failure to prepare for the test is not an extenuating circumstance. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... A: The Integrated Counseling and Advisement Network is a framework made up of faculty, staff, academic advisors, and counselors working in collaboration to enhance student success. One component of iCAN is an interactive website designed to assist both faculty and students: http://www.cpcc.edu/ican Q: Can iCAN help when students say they cannot come in for advising? A: Students can be referred to the online advising service (www.cpcc.edu/ican/live) for answers to quick questions. If additional assistance is needed, an online chat appointment can be arranged. Q: My students do not seem familiar with the campus, college life or resources. What is available to assist in the transition? A: The College offers a college student success course, ACA 111. In addition, an online college orientation is available for viewing. The orientation is found at www.cpcc.edu/ican/orientation and focuses on transitioning to college, exploring academic paths and CPCC people and resources. Q: What resources are available to students who need additional information on goal setting, prioritizing or time management? A: Talking with a counselor in person is the best option, but for students who cannot come to campus, a wealth of information is available in our online Help Center, located here: www1.cpcc.edu/ican/help . The Help Center provides information and action plans addressing a variety of student concerns. In addition to printable handouts, internet links to external and internal resources are available. Q: The CPCC website is huge. Can iCAN help my students find what they need? A: The student directory is a comprehensive list of all topics related to CPCC students, and it is arranged alphabetically. A student simply identifies a key word and clicks the link to go to the site. Also, every Thursday in October, look for links in the Communicator to some great breast cancer information on the Susan G. Komen website. For more information, please contact Student Life at 6584. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... At two years old, Alan was showing signs of developmental delays. His parents were told that he would likely be placed into a class for exceptional children with disabilities, and though his parents accepted the possibility, they were concerned about labeling their son at such an early age. They brought him to Logan Community Day Care, a United Way member agency that serves children aged six weeks to five years old. There, Logan Day Care Staff, along with the help of Piedmont Developmental Services and Cabarrus County Head Start, provided speech and language therapy and worked with Alan so that he was able to function at his developmental level. Alan is now five years old and will be entering kindergarten this fall with his peers. CPCC's United Way Campaign is currently at 35% of our goal of $35,000. Your donation to United Way goes to support supports 97 member agencies and more than 200 programs that address the most pressing health and human service needs of people in our region. Please become a partner with many others in our community to make a difference. You have received information from United Way via email about making your pledge online. If you would prefer to receive a paper pledge, please contact a member of the United Way Committee: Amanda Capobianchi, Frank Granger and Keith Beam. Halton Theater Concept by Richard Lewine and John Fearnley Music by Richard Rodgers Lyrics by Lorenz Hart Before there was Rodgers & Hammerstein there was Rodgers & Hart. In over 30 musicals and films this exciting writing duo set the standard for musical comedy. From their first hit song in 1925 through their final show-stopper in 1943, the prolific team of Rodgers & Hart continually redefined the musical theatre with their wit, freshness and intelligence. In this rousing revue, the first act sets the stage for romance while the second act presents their more satiric gems. Filled with such standards as "Ten Cents a Dance," "Falling in Love with Love" and "The Lady is a Tramp," Rodgers & Hart: A Celebration explains their success. Perhaps master tunesmith Irving Berlin summed it up best: "Tuneful and tasty, schmaltzy and smart-music by Rodgers, lyrics by Hart."
