How can I get help for this student? A: Student Counselors are available for any student who needs assistance. It is the student's responsibility to seek help, and as an instructor, advisor, or mentor, you can encourage them in any of the following ways: * Speak to the student about your concern for him or her. (See suggested phrases below for initiating the conversation.) * Let the student know that free, confidential counseling is available on campus. * Discuss the benefits of speaking with a counselor with the student. * Walk with the student to the counseling office to make an appointment. * Make regular announcements in your class about services provided on campus. * Download a handout or information leaflet from Counseling's Online Help Center and share it with the student. Instructors in developmental courses for Title III students can make referrals to counseling using the Online Student Profile. Expanded use of the Online Student Profile in future semesters will increase access to this online tool for faculty. Suggested Phrases When Referring a Student to Counseling Services * I'm concerned about you * I want to offer you the support you need to do well/succeed * I see great potential in you * It seems like something is standing in your way * Many resources are available * Your (grades, absences, other) in my class have caught my attention * Perhaps talking to someone would help * How can I help you be more successful? * What steps would help you understand what this course is requiring? * I can help you get in touch with a counselor on campus. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Yazir Henri was a soldier in the armed wing (Mkonte we Sizwe - "MK") of the African National Congress. He left South Africa at the age of 15 and was trained in Moscow, becoming an officer at the age of 19. He was one of the MK soldiers to testify at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). For those who have seen the movie "Long Night's Journey into Day" you will recall the testimony of the killers of the Guguletu Seven. One of the projects that the Direct Action Center has spearheaded is the Mother's Support Initiative, which began with support for the mothers of the Guguletu Seven. The Direct Action Center for Peace and Memory is a nongovernmental peace activist and human rights organization formed to face the manifold challenges that returning soldiers and political activists had in adapting to South Africa's hard won peace. The center grew out of returning soldiers' and anti-apartheid activists' need of self-reintegration and healing in a postwar democracy. The center conducts Peace Building Workshops and memory tours called Journeys of Remembrance. Yazir now travels extensively, working with groups in the USA, Germany, Ireland, and other parts of the world. Please join us for an engaging and thought-provoking talk from someone who committed his life to the liberation struggle during South Africa's war, and who is now an advocate for peace and post-TRC work in South Africa. Section shells are created based on the information entered in the CODs (Course Origination Documents) for summer 2006. Only courses whose COD lists an instructional delivery type of IN, WB, HY, TV, or TW will have class section shells created. If you need a section shell created, simply have your program chair update the COD. Only the instructor listed in the COD can access the section shell. Choosing to use the Moodle LMS: Request a course shell by visiting the CAW site and selecting your course section from the list. Previous Moodle semesters are also able from the CAW site. The requested shell will appear in Moodle approximately 24 hours after you place the request. Creating new master courses: Master courses can be created on either Blackboard or Moodle at any time by using the 'Master Courses' option on CAW . Copying course content into section shells: All copy activities must be completed by May 19 before the semester begins. Please note, the course copy feature will become unavailable to instructors on May 20. After this deadline instructors will need to contact the Distance Learning department at x6111 to have a course copied. Prior semester section shells are available to instructors, in Blackboard and Moodle, for one year. For prior semester BB shells, login to Blackboard. For prior semester Moodle shells, visit the CAW site. On May 17, the spring 2006 courses will be moved and made available to instructors through the CAW site. Batch copying: If you need course content copied into more than 5 section shells, that service is available via a form on the CAW site. Copy instructions are also found here . All batch copies are due by May 5 and are acted on in the following order: Fully online classes and then earliest start dates of hybrid classes. Combining several class sections: on either Blackboard or Moodle, you may submit a request form located on the CAW site Course Administration Webtools . Student enrollment in class section shells: Students will be automatically enrolled in Blackboard and Moodle section shells on the official start date listed in the COD. Online sections (IN) will be made available automatically on the official start date listed in the COD. Instructors are responsible for making Hybrid sections available. Assistance with setting course availability can be found here , or call your instructional developer at ext. 6111. To contact students prior to the start date of class: An email distribution list for your class section is available on the CAW site. You can use this tool to email your students before class begins. An email broadcast will be sent to all CPCC students on May 12: The email message alerts them to the necessity of looking up their SNAP accounts before their first class meeting. It also contains information on using the SNAP userID and password and steps to take when participating in an online/TV course at CPCC. The online grading application is available for instructors on the CAW site: Instructors are required to submit final grade rosters electronically within 48 hours after the official end of the class as reported on the Course Origination Document. Grades may be submitted electronically up to one week prior to the official end of the class. Grades submitted electronically after the 48 hour deadline will be considered late and students affected will not receive notification of their grades. Students with Incompletes: In Blackboard, a class section containing a student who has been given an "I" incomplete, the shell will remain available to that student. The section shell will continue to be available until "I" students have received a grade or for a period of 6 months. In Moodle, the class section will become unavailable to all students (including Incompletes). Instructors must make the shell available to the student with an Incomplete. On May 17, the spring 2006 courses will be moved and made available to instructors through the CAW site. A link must be sent to the student with the new URL to the previous semester. Student access to classes after the official end date: Students will no longer be able to access their classes after the official end date listed in the class COD with the exception of students receiving 'Incompletes'. Students should visit here to view their grades after this date. Scheduled system maintenance: Due to system maintenance, both platforms will be unavailable on the follows days: Blackboard: Monday, May 15, 2006, 3:00- 9:00pm Maintenance Outage Friday, June 16, 2006, 1:00- 6:00pm Maintenance Outage Moodle: Please note that these windows may not be needed for Moodle. Do they need to make an appointment? A: Student counselors are trained to assist all students, regardless of their program of study. This provides students with the convenience of meeting with any counselor at any campus. Counseling is available for students dealing with a wide variety of issues, including academic skills, goal setting, time management, relationship issues, connecting to CPCC and community resources, and educational planning. Educational planning is a responsibility that is shared between academic advisors, student counselors, and faculty advisors. * After meeting with an academic advisor to plan their first semester, students in A.A.S. programs are assigned a faculty advisor who provides advising until graduation. * After meeting with an academic advisor to plan their first semester, students in college transfer programs work with a faculty advisor until they have completed 30 hours towards their degree, and then student counselors provide academic advising until graduation. Student counselors meet with students by appointment on Monday through Thursday. Appointments are available from 8:30 am to 5:00 p.m., with extended hours at the beginning of fall and spring semesters. On Fridays, students can drop in to the Counseling offices without an appointment. In an emergency situation, arrangements will be made to see a student anytime during business hours. Academic advisors meet with students on a drop-in basis. Online advising is available for students in a chat room at this address: http://www.cpcc.edu/ican/Live/default.htm. Can I remove the flag or does the student have to meet with a counselor? A: If students are flagged because of low grades or poor academic progress, faculty advisors can remove the flag if it says First Intervention or Second Intervention. Students who are flagged for Academic Suspension must see a student counselor. Here are the steps to remove an academic intervention flag in the mainframe. >From the Advisement menu in the mainframe, go to Screen Y (Student Flag Display/Update). Verify that the flag says First Intervention or Second Intervention. Explain CPCC's Standards of Academic Progress to the student, available on page 68 of the 2005-06 catalog, and discuss strategies for improving academic performance. Counseling's Online Help Center has information leaflets that you can use with the student, and this is also an excellent opportunity to refer a student to Counseling Services for academic assistance. Follow the steps below to remove the flag. 1. Type "UPDATE" over the word "DISPLAY." 2. Tab to the term that you want to clear, and press the space bar to remove the "X" in front of that term. Press Enter. 3. Your name will appear beside the term that you cleared. 4. Add a note to the student's advisement history summarizing your discussion with the student. Q: What if the flag says "Limited T3 Student Success"? A: The T3 flag is used to identify new students who qualify for the Title III cohort. New students in developmental courses are automatically referred to an academic advisor to receive assistance with their transition to college. Sometimes, however, continuing students are flagged if they repeat the placement test. If the flag on Screen Y says T3 Student Success, you may remove the flag using the steps above if the student meets the following criteria: * Student has completed curriculum courses at CPCC in previous semesters. (Verified on Screen C, History File Display) * Student repeated the placement test and scored into developmental courses. (Verified on Screen F, Placement Testing Display) Questions? Unified messaging is a convergence of technologies that delivers voice mail and fax messages to your Outlook mailbox. The benefits of this service include: * A single location for all your messages. * Ability to access them all from your office Outlook. Access from any computer connected to the college network or the internet will be available starting July 2006. * Processing email, voice mail and faxes uniformly to review, forward, delete or store these messages. The new system will create some new folders in your mailbox and follows the best practice of organizing and managing information in folders. A folder called My Cabinet will be created in all Outlook mailboxes (if it already doesn't exist) and will contain two new folders called Voice mail and Faxes (where applicable). The system will automatically forward all your voice messages and incoming faxes to these folders. Please note that voice mail messages will not remain accessible through the telephone 48 hours after being received. Fax messaging pertains mostly to departments. Outlook address book will contain departmental resource addresses e.g. CPCC ITS Helpdesk or CPCC Registration etc for each department at the college. Faxes to the departmental fax number can be directed to be delivered to this common address and authorized individuals as identified by each department can have access to these folders. Notice to Communite' Users: If you have been using the Communite" unified messaging system, your account will be migrated to the new Call Pilot system. Detailed information regarding your migration will be sent to you. All Communite' users will be migrated by May 12. After you have been notified, you will need to dial into the call pilot system and record your new greeting. http://www.cpcc.edu/itservices/telephone/Voice_Mail_Central.pdf Please review our Project Page located on the ITS Web Site . A: The ACCUPLACER measures students' abilities in four subjects: sentence skills, reading comprehension, arithmetic, and algebra. Test scores in these subjects determine a student's placement into developmental or college-level courses based on the cut scores in the chart below. Students frequently ask to retake the placement test; however, retest permission is granted only in the following circumstances: * The student's test scores are one year old or older. Contact Admissions to schedule retest. * The student has completed a developmental course with an "A" and wishes to test out of the next developmental course. Contact Division Directors for retest permission: Karen Williams (English and Reading) or Suzanne Williams (Math). * Extenuating circumstances during the test administration affected the student's score. In this rare instance, retest permission is given at the discretion of the division directors listed above. Failure to prepare for the test is not an extenuating circumstance. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... You may recall that during the first two weeks of each of the past two semesters the database hung and had to be restarted. Course copy activity is database intensive and when combined concurrently with import/export of content, test pools, placement tests, etc. it degrades performance dramatically. So when Blackboard's professional services team reviewed our system, they suggested we make a simple procedural change by segregating course copy activity. This change does put some pressure on the program/discipline chairs to insure that both online and hybrid courses are copied before the semester start date. If complications arise preventing you from meeting the deadline, you can submit a request using the Course Administration Website's batch copy form and copying will be done for you. Please allow 2-3 business days. Thank you for your partnership in improving the online experience for students and fellow faculty members. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I especially want to acknowledge my church family, Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, for a $1,000.00 donation, Jennifer Ennis, Julie Post, Shelia Clemons, Carolyn Pence, Dwight Evans, Inga Treveiler, Peggy Pressley, Renata Ashe-Warren, Kathie Cox, Martha Taylor, Cathy McLendon, Johnnie Roach, Shawn Weathers, Barbara Potts, Aaron Sigmon, Arlender Watkins, Don Thomas and Donna Mackey for their support and participation which enhanced the success of our fundraising drive. Also to Gwendolyn Gillespie for creating the big check that was presented to the Buddy Kemp Caring House and Mae McDowell for providing the paper the big check was printed on. Total donation: $ 2,200.00. This is great news! We far exceeded our goal and donated 2.5 times what we did last year! We accomplished a worthy task working together as a family. Togetherness does have benefits. Again, I appreciate so much your wonderful support. It is a privilege to be a part of the CPCC Family and Friendship Missionary Baptist Church. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... If you have a student who has "Never Attended" or who has "Stopped Attending", please complete the form and return it to the Financial Aid Office (Central High 206) or e-mail the name of the student, Social Security number and course to julie-ann.anderson at cpcc.edu. To prevent institutional liabilities, attendance reports and/or email verification will need to be returned to the Financial Aid Office by Tuesday, June 6, at 5:00 p.m. According to federal regulations, Title IV funds are awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of Title IV funds that the student was originally scheduled to receive. If the amount disbursed to the student is greater than the amount the student earned, unearned funds must be returned to the US Department of Education within 30 days after the student stopped attending. For those students who "never attended", the student's financial aid award is voided and the student is billed for any tuition, fees and/or bookstore charges. To eliminate students being billed, it is imperative that the Financial Aid Office receive notification of any "never attendees" and/or withdrawals. Throughout the semester, please continue forwarding the reports for those students who have stopped attending or emailing the information to the Financial Aid Office. If you have any questions, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 6942. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
