writer.
It was Mike who guided the weekly Communicator and who mentored its

Upon his retirement, Mike composed a farewell message to his CPCC

>From Tracie Tallant
Today, with high-quality, regular mammography, monthly breast
self-examinations and regular check-ups by your physician, most breast
cancer can be detected at an early stage and can be treated
successfully.
CPCC Occupational Health and Safety is encouraging our female employees
to get a screening mammogram at Charlotte Radiology's Morehead Medical
Plaza Breast Center location. Charlotte Radiology will bill your
insurance for this exam. If you do not have insurance, they offer a
discounted price when you pay at the time of your visit.
Women between age 20 and 39 should have a clinical breast exam performed
by a health-care professional at least every three years; women 40 years
of age or older with no significant breast problems, should have annual
exams and screening mammograms.
Charlotte Radiology will have appointments available on the following
dates and times:
Monday-Friday
December 4 - 8, 2006
7:45 a.m. - 4:15 p.m
Please call 704.367.2232 or toll free 877.362.2232 to make your
appointment! To ensure that you are scheduled correctly, please identify
yourself as CPCC employee when you schedule and at the time of your
appointment. You and your physician should receive your results within
10 business days.
For directions, you can visit their website at
www.charlotteradiology.com . If any
additional information is needed, please contact Tracie Tallant
at 6580.

>From Library Services
The CPCC Libraries are pleased to announce that CPCC faculty, students,
and staff now have access to the electronic version of Resources for
College Libraries (RCL), an exciting new collection development tool.
RCL provides a core list of titles (print and electronic) recommended
for college libraries serving undergraduates. The core list features
65,000 titles in 58 curriculum-specific subjects. Titles have been
selected for academic libraries by more than 300 subject specialists and
bibliographers, and reviewed by outside, independent referees. Titles
were also selected to reflect today's undergraduate curriculum.
The CPCC Libraries will be using RCL to strengthen and improve the
library's collection. The Collection Development liaisons for subject
areas and programs will be creating lists to share with faculty for
potential purchase. We would also love to have you share with us! If you
would like to share a list or title with your liaison, just click the
"Add to List" button and follow the simple directions. Once you've
created a list, you can email it to your liaison. To find the liaison
for your area, click here
.
You can browse by subject or Library of Congress Classification, or
search by keyword, title, author, or ISBN. The information provided on
each title includes the publication information, audience level,
subjects, and reviews and synopses when available. To start searching,
click here . RCL can also be found in the
library's alphabetical listing of databases.
Stay tuned for more details on the libraries' efforts to improve the
materials available for students, faculty, and staff.
RCL is a combined effort of the Association of College and Research
Libraries and their journal Choice and R.R. Bowker, publisher of Books
in Print. If you have any questions regarding RCL, please contact

>From Library Services
In honor and recognition of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and
the many unsung heroes of the Civil Rights Movement era, the CPCC
Libraries is hosting a special program. Dr. Robert S. Smith, Assistant
Professor of Africana Studies at UNCC, will speak to students, faculty
and staff on the history and ramifications of the Montgomery Bus Boycott
Movement and what it means to us today. The event will be held on
Wednesday, January 10, from 11:00 a.m.-12:20 p.m. in Tate Hall (recital
hall) on the second floor of the Overcash Center.
As part of the presentation, Dr. Smith will show the documentary Mighty
Times: The Legacy of Rosa Parks, which focuses on why and how the
boycott was organized. The documentary also illustrates how, amid
opposition and this period of social unrest, Martin Luther King Jr. and
other citizens mobilized their communities to jump start what we now
know as the Civil Rights Movement.
After the presentation, Dr. Smith will entertain audience questions. We
encourage you to integrate this with your class assignments, bring your
classes, and/or recommend this special program to students as it will be
very enlightening and educational. To ensure that accommodations are
sufficient, please RSVP to retha.hall at cpcc.edu or call 6113.

>From Amanda Capobianchi
Preparation has begun for Information Tables at all of our campuses
during the first days of the spring semester. Volunteers are needed to
man the tables, assisting students with finding the right building and
classroom, navigating through their schedule, answering basic first-week
questions, and giving them a smile and a few encouraging words about the
start of a great semester. We hope you can volunteer an hour or two of
your time to assist us with this important effort! Please contact your
campus coordinator to sign-up!

Microsoft Time Saving Shortcuts is for anyone who would like to save
time accessing, organizing, and managing documents and files. By
understanding the way that Office applications "think," you will make
the most of the Microsoft programs you use all the time.
Topic areas include Windows terminology, numerous shortcut keys, and
quick launching buttons/menus/toolbars. In addition, organizing files
and folders will be covered.
After attending this workshop, with the basics in hand, you will be
amazed at the amount of time you will save.
This new PD training will be offered at Central on January 2, 2:00-4:00
p.m. and at Levine on January 3, 1:00-3:00 p.m.
