We hope that his comments will spark further interest in this topic and that many will want to attend two follow-up sessions. Session II will follow Janet's meeting, starting about 10:40-noon. Session III will run from 12:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. An added treat for Session III is that pizza will be served! Register for session II and III through Learner Web. Bill Roberson, Ph.D. University of Texas at El Paso Since 1982 Bill Roberson has been in the pursuit of teaching excellence-for faculty, for programs, and for whole institutions. Since 1992 this pursuit has become the focal point of his professional activity and practice in Faculty, Instructional and Curriculum Development. His primary area of interest is designing courses and assignments that ensure active engagement of students and the development of their ability to think critically. His public workshops and presentations emphasize extensive interplay with the audience, small-group processing, problems to solve, cases to figure out, scenarios, and other mini-challenges that require frequent analysis and reflection. His facilitation goal is for participants to exit these sessions not only with the enthusiasm to innovate in their teaching but also with a clearer idea of their teaching goals, and concrete plans to put new ideas into action. Dr. Roberson has held positions in faculty and curriculum development at UNC-Chapel Hill, Indiana University-Bloomington, and currently University of Texas-El Paso, where he serves as Executive Director of Instructional Support Services. In this interactive workshop we will examine common university teaching practices, assumptions about critical thinking, and student learning habits to see how successful we've been in making critical thinking a learning goal. Participants will develop a working definition of critical thinking and apply this definition to their own classes. You will come away with a clear understanding of the process of critical thinking and several strategies for teaching it. Since this workshop is about doing critical thinking, you will not just hear about strategies, but also experience some approaches to teaching critical thinking. Session II: "Will this be on the test?" and other questions that frustrate faculty In this workshop, you will play the "Perry Game," a lively, interactive exercise designed to diagnose student assumptions about learning. Participants will develop strategies that move students toward more sophisticated thinking and clarify where the stumbling blocks lie on the road toward critical thinking and learning. An added benefit is that you will receive a copy of the game with full instructions so that you can use it in your classes to enhance students' understanding of what critical thinking is and how well they do it. Session III: "A Simple Plan" Designing Lessons for Inquiry and Discovery This session develops "A Simple Plan" that you can use to design assignments that promote critical thought and reflection. Participants will have the chance to design critical thinking exercises both in teams and individually. Participants will also come away with ideas on how to design assessment strategies that demonstrate the critical thinking students are doing -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... On February 24, at 12:30 p.m. in Pease Auditorium, CPCC will host two Palestinians and two Israelis who recently participated in one of the most widely publicized expeditions in history, known as Breaking the Ice. In January of 2004, the international organization Extreme Peace Missions, a German-based foundation, sent four Palestinians and four Israelis on an expedition from Chile to Antarctica. After sailing the gale-driven seas off Cape Horn, these men and women hiked Antarctica and climbed a previously unnamed peak that is now known as the Mountain of Palestinian and Israeli Friendship. The Dali Lama, Kofi Annan, Yasser Arafat, Shimon Peres and other international dignitaries lent their public support to this landmark peace mission. In addition to speaking engagements, members of the Breaking the Ice expedition are currently involved in selecting a group of five Palestinian and five Israeli youth for an upcoming Unity Project expedition in the mountains of N.C. The N.C. Outward Bound School has sponsored Unity Project activities since 1997 and is partnering with Breaking the Ice in this new effort to further the cause of peace. Faculty/Staff/Student Wellness Announcements Gentle Yoga for Health The classical techniques of Yoga date back more than 5,000 years. In ancient times, the desire for greater personal freedom, health and long life, and heightened self-understanding gave birth to this system of physical and mental exercise which has since spread throughout the world. The word Yoga means "to join or yoke together," and it brings the body and mind together into one harmonious experience. Yoga is suitable for most adults of any age or physical condition. Because of the nonstrenuous nature of our approach to exercise, even those with physical limitations can find a beneficial routine of Yoga. Currently, there is a substantial amount of prime material that has been checked out to faculty and staff, much of which is more than a year past due. We would like to get this material back so that we can circulate it to others who may need it. The library catalog automatically labels long overdue materials as being "Lost." Although they are not truly lost, they are virtually lost to others who want to use them. In addition we have students expressing great frustration when what they want is in the catalog but reflected as lost. Lost items must be physically returned and cannot be renewed via phone or email. I would like to have this material returned to the library no later than February 1. If you are not sure if you have material checked out, you can check your account online by clicking the My Library Account tab in the library catalog or by emailing Angela Sox. If we have not received the material by February 1 or heard from you by then, we will contact you individually and let you know what is outstanding on your account. This is an unprecedented achievement in faculty-staff support for CPCC. The folks at City View have been recognized with a celebratory luncheon. The race for the highest participation is still on among CPCC's six largest campuses. A celebration and College-wide bragging rights are up for grabs. North Campus is in the lead but Levine is making a move, now trailing by only four percentage points. West Campus and Central are also closing the gap. There is still plenty of time for any campus to step up and take the lead, in spite of what Captains Beverly Dickson and Lili Johnson believe to be an insurmountable advantage. They're ready to order the food and party. Get your pledge form , then complete and send it to the CPCC Foundation by campus mail. Your participation is more important than the amount you can give. Every gift counts and helps CPCC better serve both faculty and students! Give $5.00 for every year of your employment. Increase your gift by making it a five-year pledge. In any amount, stand and be counted by getting your name on the list of CPCC faithful. Show your fellow citizens that we believe investing in CPCC is a sound investment in our community. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... His memoir, The Color of Water, remained on the New York Times Bestseller List for two years, has been translated into more than a dozen languages, and has become an American classic read in colleges and high schools. It is the autobiographical account of his mother, a white Jewish woman from Poland who raised 12 black children in New York City and sent each to college. His newest book, Miracle at St. Anna (Riverhead 2003), which the Baltimore Sun called a "searingly, soaringly beautiful novel," has been dubbed "a lyrical, touching fable about the miraculous power of love" by Publishers Weekly. The book, already climbing the bestsellers' list, is the story of a black American soldier who befriends a six-year-old Italian boy in Italy during World War II. For more information visit; https://payforprint.cpcc.edu/pfp/ PayForPrint is a print management service which will track printing by individuals. Why does the college need to implement a print management system? 1. Print costs need to be managed; the college continues to grow, adding on open labs, libraries and computer classrooms with printers but there is no commensurate increase in funding to cover the consumables at these additional locations. 2. Managing printing will hopefully curtail the waste and abuse which commonly occurs. One student printed 3038 times last semester. The average student makes only 44 prints. 3. As CPCC has evolved into a multi-campus institution we have moved away from designated program labs. For example the ATC open lab printing/consumables had been provided for by the IT division but all students used that area. Rather than have the lab fees of students from a few program areas support the printing of all students, we are moving the base cost to the Technology Fees account which is a single central account managed by ITS. Here, in brief, is how the service will work: Every registered student will have a print account which can be accessed using their SNAP userid and password. Students who pay technology fees will have a free quota of prints in their personal print account. Student quota amounts will vary. The ratio of free prints is directly proportional to the amount of tech fees paid by the student. So for example if a student has paid $5.00 in tech fees they will have 100 free prints. If a student's program of study does not require payment of technology fees then that student will have an account but will not have any free prints associated with it. Prints/Additional prints can be purchased online using a credit or debit card, or cash can be accepted at any of the cashier's offices. When paying by cash, the receipt must be presented to an open lab facilitator who is authorized to credit the student's account. Facilitators can also credit students for print jams or other print related problems. The actual printing process begins when the student selects "print" while in any application. He/she then goes to the print release station, logs in and is presented with a screen which provides account details, displays the print jobs and the associated cost of each print job. You can see right away the potential for savings and reduction of waste. There are several benefits to students: * * No print card to keep up with, only the same userid and password which is used to access everything (Single Sign On). * * A consistent print service available at most campus locations, CityView and NO are the exceptions at this time. * * A fair distribution of costs for printing. * * Reduction of waste and its negative impact to the environment............ According to federal regulations, Title IV funds are awarded to a student under the assumption that the student will attend school for the entire period for which the assistance is awarded. When a student withdraws, the student may no longer be eligible for the full amount of Title IV funds that the student was originally scheduled to receive. If the amount disbursed to the student is greater than the amount the student earned, unearned funds must be returned to the US Department of Education within thirty days after the student stopped attending. For those students who "never attended," the student's financial aid award is voided and the student is billed for any tuition, fees and/or bookstore charges. To eliminate students being billed, it is imperative that the Financial Aid Office receive notification of any "never attendees" and/or withdrawals. (Student accounts were billed over $30,000 for the fall 2004 semester due to late attendance slips and/or withdrawals being received after pell checks were issued.) You may download instructions on completing the attendance slip from inside.cpcc at http://inside.cpcc.edu/forms/financialaid/attendancereportinstructions.d oc. Throughout the semester, please continue forwarding the reports for those students who have stopped attending or emailing the information to the Financial Aid/Veterans' Affairs Office. If you have any questions, please contact the Financial Aid Office at 6942. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... The eligibility requirements are as follows: Eligibility * You must be a U.S. citizen as of the application deadline. * If you have been attending college full-time, you must be in your second year of college attendance as of the application deadline. If you have attended college on a part-time basis since completing high school, you must have completed a total of at least 45 but no more than 60 semester hours (60 to 75 quarter hours) as of the application deadline. * You must be majoring in the physical, mathematical, computer and information, life, or social sciences, psychology, selected humanities, or engineering. See Fields of Study List. * You must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.3 or higher on a 4.0 scale, averaged over all institutions attended, including fall 2004 grades if enrolled during that term. * You cannot simultaneously be a DHS Scholar and participate in a co-op program. * If you have earned a bachelor's degree as of the application deadline, you are ineligible. * If you have an outstanding active military service commitment as of fall 2005, you are ineligible. * If you plan to study abroad during fall 2005, you are ineligible. Stipend * $1,000/month for 9 months during the academic year. $5,000 for the 10-week summer internship. Tuition * Full tuition and mandatory, nonrefundable fees paid. Duration * Appointments are for two years, given satisfactory academic progress and availability of funding. Internship Requirement * A 10-week, continuous, off-campus internship at a DHS-designated facility will be required during the summer between your first and second year of tenure. Other Important Items * You must be enrolled as a full-time student at an accredited college or university located in the United States or its territories while on tenure. * If you are currently enrolled at a two-year institution and you are awarded a scholarship, before you can accept the scholarship, you must be accepted at a 4-year institution that has agreed to accept your first two years of study as transfer credit. * Because this is a 2-year scholarship with a required internship during the summer following the first year, it is not appropriate for students who plan to graduate in less than four years. * While there is no guarantee of employment, you must indicate a willingness to accept, after graduation, competitive employment offers from DHS, state and local security offices, DHS-affiliated federal laboratories, or DHS-related research staff positions. This condition will not interfere with plans to attend graduate school in a supported field immediately after graduation. * No deferrals of a DHS award or the internship component of a DHS award will be allowed. * Students in a 4-year or 5-year joint baccalaureate-master's degree program should apply in their second year of college attendance. * If you accept a DHS Scholarship, you cannot accept any other scholarships, grants or loans while on DHS tenure except educational benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. There has never been a better time to encourage your students to apply for the Gilman Scholarship. The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the US Department of State has recently announced that Congress has approved a bill that increases funding for the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program from $1.575 to $2.6 million. This significant increase in funding will enable the Gilman Program to make a minimum of 500 scholarship awards during the 2005-2006 academic year. We thank all of you who have supported the program and the increased funding by encouraging your students to submit applications, by talking with your state and national leaders about how important this program is to your campus, by volunteering your time as a selection panelist, or by promoting the program at conferences, with colleagues, and in meetings. This is a win for all of us who know the importance of study abroad and its value to the greater society. Thank you. Fall 2005 Application Cycle Now Open The Institute of International Education (IIE) is currently accepting applications for the Fall 2005 cycle.
