Instructors sometimes like to have students exchange test papers, pop quizzes, and so on to be graded in class. Since this involves grades, is this practice permissible? A. This is often asked; and, as far as the regulations are concerned, it is probably OK to do so. The rationale seems to be that these grades are not yet recorded, not part of the record. Even so, of course, students may sometimes object. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Since Chiron's supply of vaccines will not be distributed, the number of vaccines to be released in the US has been cut by 50 million and has created a national health care crisis. The CDC had requested that all agencies voluntarily restrict vaccinations for only those deemed to be at high risk. In support of the CDC's recommendations, all flu clinics are hereby suspended. Only those agencies that are at high risk (i.e., medical facilities, etc.) may still plan to have their clinics. Maxim will be contacting the groups who have submitted clinic request forms. Anyone who is considered high risk, may still go to one of 700 retail sites across the state to get a free flu shot. There will be a simple questionnaire to complete to determine their high risk status and they should still bring their State Health Plan ID card and their photo ID. We had about 100 individuals attend that meeting and a cohort of doctoral students began in the summer of 2003. Since that time, the curriculum has been revised and a program specialization in Community has been designated. UNCC would now like to have a second informational meeting for potential doctoral students from CPCC and other local community colleges. An overview of the program will be provided in a meeting at CPCC in the Central High Building, Room 301 on October 25, 2004, from 4:00- 5:30pm. The Department of Educational Leadership at UNC-Charlotte is now accepting applications for students interested in the new Ed.D. program with a Community specialization. This program emphasizes leadership in the areas of curriculum development and instructional supervision in non-public school settings. It is designed for those interested in careers as senior level administrators in educational organizations such as community colleges or for those whose professional responsibilities relate to the supervision of instruction in other contexts. To ensure the effectiveness and competence of individuals in such positions, coursework within the program also reflects the need for proficiency in program design and research. UNCC is actively encouraging people who are in the community college setting to consider this opportunity since we have developed a strong emphasis in this area. They currently have twelve students already enrolled in this new program, most of whom are currently employed full and part-time in community colleges. It is an important component of Creating Opportunities, CPCC's $15 million campaign. I hope you will take time to carefully review the information you receive. As you will learn, the College seeks to raise $10 million for scholarships, $2 million for instructional programs, $2 million for faculty support, and $1 million in unrestricted support. You will be asked to make a gift to one or more of these important priorities. You will be able to do so by check, payroll deduction, or credit card; you will be able to pledge over a period of five years. Please know that the support of the CPCC family is important on two levels. First, your gift will help the College reach the ambitious $15 million goal. Second, your participation will send a positive message to the broader community and to potential donors-a message that CPCC's faculty and staff endorse its mission and are willing to invest in assuring its success. Many thanks for what you do for the College every day and for what you will do. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me or any other member of the Institutional Advancement/Foundation staff at 704.330.6869. Sincerely, Kevin R. Students sometimes ask me for "something, just anything" to show that they are registered or are full-time. Usually it seems to have something to do with insurance or loans. Can I just print the registration screen or student schedule and sign it for them? A. The student should submit a written request to Student Records for an enrollment verification letter. The request must come from the student; not a parent, spouse, employer or anyone else. Enrollment verifications can be handled by the Records Office at any CPCC campus, and are available at no cost to the student. Q. But I just hate to send them somewhere else! A. Yes, but often you'll serve the student and the College better by doing so, and that's certainly true in this case. There are liability issues for the College here, and you should know that students have used signed screen prints to commit fraud. An enrollment verification letter is an official document bearing the raised seal of the College and the signature of a registrar. It is standard from campus to campus and includes enrollment status (full-time, part-time) as well as any necessary disclaimers. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Fall is here, and instead of this season being one of endings, it is often the source of beginnings for many of our students and employees. Many of our students at CPCC get to experience one of those new beginnings when they receive a scholarship funded by the Foundation. Several of our employees have been able to start a new phase of their lives when they receive financial assistance for educational advancement; some of our colleagues have been able to give shape to dreams through the receipt of an Innovation Grant, and others have found special needs met through the assistance of the Foundation. October marks the beginning of the Foundation's fund raising campaign. Initially, it is set to start with the CPCC Family before expanding to outside individuals and businesses. Supporting the Foundation is one of the best things you can do for yourself, your fellow employees, the college, and the community in general. Where else can you actually see your gift go to work so quickly? As you walk onto any of our campuses, you can be assured that you will meet a student who is receiving assistance through a scholarship. You can find an employee who's getting financial assistance with the cost of college tuition and books. You can see the results of a project funded by an Innovation Grant, and you can be assured that the Foundation has helped with special projects for each campus. Join us on October 13 and 14 in Pease Auditorium located in the lower level of the Learning Resources Center for a celebration of new beginnings as the Foundation hosts two information get-togethers. Come by either in the evening on October 13 at 5:00 PM or in the morning on October 14 at 8:30 AM and meet your friends, enjoy some wonderful food, and learn more about the contributions that our Foundation makes to our students and employees. We hope you will thoughtfully consider making a gift to the Foundation because it continues to make new beginnings possible for many of our students and staff. We look forward to seeing you on either October 13 or 14. While not all the power adapters sold during the noted date range are affected; ITS has already identified several that are included in this recall in the college's inventory. In an effort to ensure your safety, ITS requests that you bring your laptop computer to the Information Technology Services Help Desk, Terrell 409, beginning Monday, October 18, for testing and verification. ITS staff can quickly determine if the adapter is one of those affected by this recall, and will process the recalled product's return and replacement if necessary. The model number can be found either on the top of the laptop or on the label on the bottom of the laptop. If you have questions or concerns about this issue, please feel free to contact CPCC.ITS.Equipment at cpcc.edu. Some of us in Instruction were sharing concerns about a student and then began to wonder if this was appropriate or allowed by FERPA regulations. Our only intention was to help the student. A. This may be more of a common sense call than a true FERPA answer. Professional colleagues within the College should be able to seek advice and guidance from one another. Someone with a more objective view may provide a suggestion or solution that will benefit the student. If possible, it's probably better not to name the student; and such discussions should always be handled confidentially, sensitively, and with sound professional judgment. But that goes without saying since, after all, no one really wants to be talked about. Q. What about discussions with our peers at other institutions? A. Now, this is a FERPA answer. You can, but it is best to do so only in the abstract. The student should never be identified or identifiable - unless you have his or her written permission specifying the items to be discussed and with whom they can be discussed. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We make hard choices and tend to support those closest to our hearts. For me, CPCC is at the top of the list for three reasons; 1. I see faculty and staff here change students' lives regularly. You lay opportunity at their feet and many make the most of that wonderful gift. Because you help, those students find their way in the world, which spreads through the lives of their children and for generations to come. Because of you, our world is a better place. Because of the hope and inspiration you generate, one-half of my Family Campaign gift is restricted to faculty support. 2. Scholarships give many who badly need your gift of opportunity a real chance at success and happiness. The ability to pay should never be the criterion on which education is granted. Scholarships are a gift that can return dividends many times the value of the original investment through the productive careers of successful students who contribute to rather than cost our society. Because of the difference a scholarship can make, the other one-half of my Family Campaign gift is restricted to scholarships. 3. And last but never least, in 1969 I found both at CPCC - a scholarship that gave me a chance, a faculty that inspired me. Thank you! Please be a part of this important effort to help each other, to help students and to show the community that we believe in what happens here. If we don't, why should others? I have a small business on the side selling 100% natural nutritional supplements and would like to use my class rosters as mailing lists to send brochures to my students. Is this acceptable under FERPA? After all, I'm not disclosing any information, and these are very good products. A. No. Access to student information in any form should be used only for legitimate educational purposes, the work of the College, in other words. It should never be used for personal or private reasons - or out of curiosity. Q. Well, let me ask this then. Don't all College employees have legitimate educational interest in student information by virtue of being employed here? A. No, not at all. Many College employees have no legitimate interest or need for student information at all. It simply isn't needed to perform their jobs. Some may have a legitimate educational interest only in a specific population or set of students. For others, it may be necessary to have access to every current and former student to carry out their required duties. In any case, access is only to be used for College purposes. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Randy Dorton, one of the ten who died in the Hendrick plane crash, was a special friend who served on CPCC's Motorsports Committee and helped to foster a growing partnership between Hendrick and CPCC. The upcoming Joe Hendrick Center for Automotive Technologies was made possible by Rick Hendrick, who donated a million dollars toward the project. The new building is named after Rick's father, who recently passed away. Rick has lost a father, son, brother, two nieces, and close business associates who were like family. We wish for the entire Hendrick family strength, hope, and peace during this unimaginably difficult time. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
