This institute is one of 11 such institutes running nationally this year. In 2002 the Microsoft Institute was joined with the American Association of Community Colleges' Working Connections program and the Institute ran in both Texas and Washington. The program proved to be so successful and well liked that additional national sponsors, namely Course Technology, Prentice Hall, McGraw-Hill, and Prosoft Training, have been found. This year 54 of the 58 NC Community Colleges nominated IT faculty members to attend the institute. In addition, three guest schools, including York Technical College of Rock Hill, SC, have sent attendees. There are approximately 100 IT faculty members in attendance at Central Campus from June 2-6. There are six tracks of training for this year's institute: Network Security, Net Server, Digital Animation, Database, E-Commerce, and Web Design. Each track has a highly qualified instructor. An important aspect of the institute is not just the technical training gained, but also the social interaction between faculty members across the state. Networking of IT faculty can benefit course and curriculum design and implementation which, of course, aid the student. This year is hoped to be the first of at least a three-year run for the institute at Central Piedmont Community College. --Ron Williams -------------- This message did not originate from the Office of Community Relations. Iyesi To: Federal Work-Study Supervisors This notice is to remind FWS supervisors that all students participating in the Federal Work-Study program must be recertified for the summer semester. Students currently working without certification are ineligible to receive FWS funds. If you have a student currently working, please submit his/her timesheet to the Financial Aid Office by the end of the day today, June 4. FWS students cannot work after this date unless once again approved by the Financial Aid Office for the new year beginning July 1. Federal Work-Study is awarded on an annual basis and it is not renewed automatically in subsequent academic years. The award is based upon annual financial circumstances. To be considered for the 2003-2004 year, students should: > Complete the 2003-2004 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); > Submit all requested documents; > Receive an award letter; > If awarded FWS, obtain a FWS Certification contract from the Financial Aid Department. This contract must be signed by the respective supervisors. > Return the signed FWS Certification contract to the Financial Aid department; and obtain a FWS job assignment location. Full-time payroll will be processed early for the month of July due to year-end closing procedures. Time sheets received after July 3 will not be processed in July. Since the vacation rollover (excess of 240 hour of vacation rolled to sick leave) will occur with the July payroll processing, it is imperative that all June Time Sheets be submitted on time. A College benefactor will double every dollar you give or pledge by June 30. Brenda and I have been working with a wonderful friend of the College. On June 19, 2003, she made a $50,000 annual fund pledge as a challenge grant. She wants to help us reach our "College Fund" goal by June 30. It has a balance of approximately $100,000. She will match every dollar we give or get by June 30, up to $50,000! Can you help? Ask your friends, business associates, relatives, even enemies who might give to CPCC. This is a wonderful opportunity. They, or perhaps you, can make an unrestricted pledge for up to five years. We only have 10 days. If you can help, please act quickly! We need gifts or written pledges in hand by June 30 at 5:00 p.m. They can e-mail me at reade.baker at cpcc.edu or Brenda at brenda.lea at cpcc.edu or donors can fax signed and dated pledge intentions to 704-330-6727. If someone would like to call us for further information, we can be reached at 704-330-6869. A pledge form may be downloaded at http://inside.cpcc.edu/forms/foundation/pledgeformgeneral.pdf Thank you for any help you might provide. --Reade Baker -------------- This message did not originate from the Office of Community Relations. Unfortunately it has been rough going since the start of summer semester. Vendor claims of scalability and performance came tumbling down as students and faculty experienced access problems and error messages. We escalated the issue to vendor management and they have been working to resolve the issues. Michael Chasen, the CEO of Blackboard, sent us a letter of apology that you are welcome to share with your students. You may download his letter at http://www.cpcc.edu/virtual/BlackboardLetter.pdf I had another conversation with him today with concerns about slow progress in resolving the issues. He acknowledged that their testing did not adequately reveal their design problems and assured me that his team of engineers will continuously focus of CPCC's installation until performance is brought to acceptable level. I wish to reassure you that your ITS team remains committed to providing you the best support possible. --Malik K. For the past few years Service Solutions Corporation, of Knoxville, TN, has provided those services. While there have been some bumps in the road, overall it has been a good journey and a good partnership. We wish them well as they move on to support other customers. With the beginning of the new fiscal year, we enter into a new partnership with General Maintenance Company, of Burlington, NC. (Their web-site is www.genmaint.com.) Several of the actual employees of SSC have been hired by General Maintenance and will continue to clean the same spaces that they clean today. You will, however, see some new faces and definitely will see new uniforms. Transitions are difficult times. Thank you for your patience and understanding during this stressful time of changing contractors. Please continue to report issues regarding housekeeping or cleanliness to the Maintenance Help Desk at 6000. If you need to elevate the issue beyond that, please call me at 6224.
