We have had twelve (12) major speakers in the Global Issues Forum speaker series over the past two years, attended by 1,715 students, faculty, staff and guests from the community. These speakers have generously participated at no cost whatever to CPCC. Our first speaker for spring 2003 is Ambassador Mark W. Erwin, former ambassador to Mauritius, the Seychelles and Comoros islands, and a very good friend of CPCC. Ambassador Erwin will speak at Levine Campus on Thursday, February 13, 2003. Exact time and topic will be announced soon. I am working to schedule outstanding speakers in March and April for both Tuesday/Thursday and MWF slots on Central Campus, and hope also for at least one speaker at Northeast Campus. Central Campus speakers will most likely be during 9:30-10:45am TT, and 9:30-10:20am MW time slots. I hope you can plan time in your syllabi for these events. In addition to the speaker series, thirteen instructors have implemented specific projects in their courses to involve their students more directly in relevant global issues. Some very creative global issues course components have been integrated into their courses. We still have funds (for $400 stipends) to continue this aspect of the project this spring. If you are interested in introducing a relevant global issues component into one of your courses, please plan to attend the Lunch and Learn on Monday, January 6, 2003, 12:00-1:00pm in LR404, or give me a call at 6782, or send an email. In addition to our routine Friday maintenance, ITS will be implementing a limit to the period of time email is held in each account's "Trash"; any item that has been in the trash for more than 14 days will be automatically emptied. This setting is enforced on each Post Office without intruding into any individual email accounts. If you would like to empty your trash yourself simply right click on the wastebasket icon labeled "Trash" in GroupWise and select "Empty Trash." If you are storing items in your "Trash" that you need to keep please relocate them to the "Cabinet." This can be completed by holding down on the right mouse-button over the item in your trash you wish to keep and while still holding down on the button, drag the item over the "Cabinet" Icon ("Cabinet" will become highlighted when you are over it), release the right mouse-button and with the left mouse-button select "undelete items." If you have questions, or would like assistance with this process, please call the ITS HelpDesk at x5000 prior to 3:00pm Friday. Information Technology Services cannot be responsible for items removed from your trash as a result of the implementation of this limit. Enforcing this time limit will alleviate some of the burden on our current email servers as well as make for the smoother migration of each account as we prepare to begin our email conversion. This will eventually make the deck waterproof so there are minimal amounts of water on the lower levels of the parking deck when it rains. Unfortunately, the contractor began on the top deck to ensure the lower levels would be dry when they were tackled. This caused much snow melt to collect on the third level. The weather forecast is such that the problem should be minimal by mid-morning on Wednesday. The conditions have also not helped with the ice-melt. When the temperature remains in the 20's, the ice melt substance will not clear the ice away. Today we are applying ice melt because the temperatures are reaching above freezing. The project involves caulking and sealing all the joints between the concrete slabs that form each level of the deck to prevent rain and melting ice from penetrating to the covered levels of the deck. The minimum area that will be sealed during a given workday, plus the area immediately below it where drips occur during the process, are being roped off for safety and to protect the vehicles in the deck. If the weather and temperature hold, the contractor should finish next week. This project was scheduled at this time to keep the costs within the allocated budget. The College has permanent alternative parking for faculty and staff along Kings and 4th Street at St. Mary's Chapel (enter from 3rd Street) and the former Gray's Bookstore (adjacent to Pineville Tire) and at the gravel lot adjacent to the Armory Drive Building. During the two-week period that this maintenance project is underway, faculty and staff may also use the lot adjacent to the new Facilities Services Center at 7th and Central.
