Earn professional development units for attending! 2. Broaden students' educational experiences! 3. Hear award-winning writers! Check the festival web site for Schedule of Events and bios and all of the featured writers: http://www.cpcc.edu/literary/2003/ Sandra E. Johnson, "Journalism at Its Best: An Artful Recounting of Real-life Events" March 17, 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. - Nonfiction workshop Sandra Johnson's nonfiction book, Standing on Holy Ground, reads like a suspense novel in its frank and unbiased account of hate crimes committed by the Ku Klux Klan against South Carolina's black churches. Relating a trail of evidence, Johnson dramatizes how courage, commitment and love worked to defeat racial hatred. In her workshop, she will discuss the balance between careful research and artful reporting. Standing on Holy Ground: A Triumph over Hate Crime in the Deep South (St. Martin's Press, 2002) has been described as a "story not only of a church under siege, but also of the courage of everyday heroes who joined together to save it." The book was featured in O: The Oprah Magazine, USA Today, and Southern Living. Johnson is a frequent guest columnist for South Carolina's The State. Her work has appeared in a variety of publications, including the Washington Post, Transitions Abroad, and Columbia Metropolitan. She has presented many readings and lectures in numerous venues, including television and radio. Marjorie Hudson, "Mosaic Writing: Using Fiction, Poetry, and Memoir in Creative Nonfiction" March 19, 9:30-11:00 a.m. - GENRE BUSTER! Marjorie Hudson thought she was writing a history book when she took on the subject of Virginia Dare and the Lost Colony in Searching for Virginia Dare: A Fool's Errand. But the haunting subject, full of missing children, grieving fathers, lost nations of Native Americans, and 400 years of legends inspired her to draw on her fiction, poetry, and memoir-writing skills to fully tell the story. Hudson will read from her thought-provoking, genre-busting creative nonfiction work Searching for Virginia Dare, talk about her decision-making process as a writer and researcher, and discuss how to use text fragments and voice as tile and grout, to make a satisfying "whole picture" in the mosaic form. Marjorie Hudson has won numerous awards for her fiction, poetry, and essays, including a Hedgebrook Fellowship, two Emerging Artist Grants, and the Sarah Belk Gambrel Artist Educator of the Year 2000. In 2002, she was a finalist for the Sherwood Anderson Fiction Award. Hudson's writing has been published in Story, Yankee, West Branch, and the North Carolina Literary Review, among others. She has led writing workshops and classroom discussions for the N.C. Writers' Network, Duke Summer Writers Program, Duke Center for Documentary Studies, and Warren Wilson College. Her new book Searching for Virginia Dare: A Fool's Errand (Coastal Carolina Press, 2002) tells the story of America's first missing child in a mosaic form, using fiction, poetry, memoir, and travelogue. A self-described "reformed Yankee," Hudson holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College and has lived in Chatham County for almost 20 years. She is a 2003 Blumenthal Reader. --Irene Honeycutt -------------- This message did not originate from the Office of Community Relations. Being able to say to a potential donor that CPCC employees have already shown their support is a powerful motivator for others to give, especially those with deep pockets. A successful Employee Campaign is a great way to celebrate CPCC's 40th Anniversary and show the community we are willing to help ourselves. Maimonides, a 12th century rabbi, described eight steps leading to a more noble approach to giving. One of the final steps is when the giver gives without knowing the recipient, and the recipient never knows the benefactor. I think this step best describes our contributions to the Foundation. For example, we will never know exactly which student reaps the benefit of our gift through a scholarship or which Innovation Grant we help fund. Neither will the scholarship recipient nor the faculty member who is awarded the grant know whose individual gift of $40, $100, $200, etc. made this possible. Our individual gifts are important and collectively they make a lasting difference. Our gifts also help inspire others outside the College family to give. State budget support looks bleak for next year. This is all the more reason why the Foundation needs your support in its Fabulous Forty Campaign. Your gift will demonstrate to the community that "we care enough to give back" at a time when support from the community is more critical than ever. Please join me in support of this year's Fabulous Forty Campaign. Lisa Williams Kline, "Family Photos & Letters: Triggers for Historical Fiction" March 18, 2:00-3:15 p.m. -- Fiction workshop Several years ago, Kline found a photo of her grandmother as a teen standing next to a 1915 Model T with a young man who was not her grandfather. This photo was the inspiration for her first novel. Recently, her mother-in-law gave her a photo taken in Latvia around 1910. Grim parents posed with their seven sons. Only one person was smiling -her husband's grandfather. That photo inspired her present novel. For the workshop, Kline asks participants to bring a photo or letter that has some family significance. She says, "We'll start your stories!" Lisa Williams Kline, raised in Winston-Salem, is a graduate of Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill where she earned her MAC in Radio, Television and Motion Pictures. She has won an IABC Gold Medal for scriptwriting, a Silver Screen Award from the US Industrial Film Festival, and a Silver Medal at the International Film and TV Festival in New York. Kline started writing fiction in 1992. Her stories for adults have appeared in many journals and anthologies, and her stories for children and teens have been accepted by Spider, Cricket, and Cicada. Kline's first novel, Eleanor Hill (Front Street/Cricket Books, 1999), won the 2000 Juvenile Fiction Award given by the North Carolina Chapter of the AAUW. Her second novel, The Princesses of Atlantis (Front Street/Cricket Books, 2002), was chosen as a 1999 Publisher's Finalist for the Mary Molloy Fellowship for a Juvenile Novel in Progress. She lives in Mooresville. Mary Sue Koeppel, "What I Learned About Writing by Being an Editor for 15 Years" March 17, 2:00-3:15 p.m. - Kalliope's Editor Koeppel has been a mainstay in Northeast Florida's literary community for nearly two decades, guiding and encouraging countless wordsmiths in the classroom and through her work as editor of Kalliope for 15 years. Her generosity in support of other writers has left little time for her own writing. In this session you'll hear Koeppel discuss her balancing act: how she maintained her integrity as an editor and applied what she learned to her own poems. Mary Sue Koeppel, perhaps best known for her role as editor of Kalliope, a nationally renowned journal of women's literature and art, is also an award-winning teacher, poet and writer. Her own writing has appeared in over 50 journals, anthologies, and magazines. She interviews writers for two TV series: Writer to Writer (PBS) and Worth Quoting broadcast by Florida Community College at Jacksonville. Her text, Writing Strategies-Plus Collaboration (Simon & Schuster), is in its third edition. She is co-editor of an anthology, Women of Vision: An Expression in Seeing by the Visually Impaired. Her first collection of poetry, In the Library of Silences: Poems of Loss (Rhiannon Press, 2001) is in its second printing. --Irene Honeycutt -------------- This message did not originate from the Office of Community Relations. While the sidewalk on Kings drive will remain open, construction fencing will close off Pease lane from through pedestrian traffic. A construction fence will initially be constructed along 4th St. and Kings Drive to terminate at Pourlos. Note that there will be no parking available to faculty/staff at the rear of Pourlos -- as this access drive will be utilized for construction traffic only. Also Note: That at intermittent times access to the first level of the faculty parking deck from Elizabeth via the Taylor Sloan Morgan path will be via the stairs/elevator to the 2nd level and then down to the first level. This detour will be due to welding activity for the new Central Energy Facility. --Jay Dorfer -------------- This message did not originate from the Office of Community Relations.
