The good news is that a new day is dawning for Sugar Creek, and CPCC stands to benefit greatly. President Zeiss currently chairs a vision committee advocating restoration of the creek by developing a greenway along the stream banks. Benefits of the Sugar Creek Greenway include improved water quality, flood protection, bike and walking paths, educational opportunities, and wildlife habitat. Neighborhood improvement opportunities are also created as greenways are developed, and this greenway will be a real asset to Central Campus and the surrounding community. Come hear Dr. Zeiss speak about the project and learn how you can support this worthy effort. Faculty are encouraged to invite your students and bring your classes as well. Please also join Student Life and the Science Department for a service project on Sugar Creek on Saturday, September 15, from 9:00 am to 12 noon. Volunteers will pick up trash along the creek and do maintenance work on the tree plantings and biological filter that we installed during previous service projects. Here are a few of the initiatives that are under way. Campus Forums: Over 500 students, faculty, and staff attended the open forums led by Dr. Zeiss at each campus location, generating discussion of many ideas about what can be done at the College. Monetary Contributions: News reports indicate that material supplies supporting the rescue efforts are abundant and that the real need is for cash. Contributions are being collected at all campuses and will be donated to the American Red Cross. Checks should be written to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. Student Life staff on each campus are coordinating collection of cash contributions. Blood Drives: The immediate need for blood has diminished, but is expected to increase again during the coming weeks. CPCC has three blood drives scheduled in the coming weeks as follows: October 23 at Central Campus, October 29 at North Campus, and October 30 at South Campus. Contact Student Life to sign up to donate a pint. Sympathy Cards: Student Life at each campus is collecting signatures on cards expressing our sympathy and our thanks to the FDNY, NYPD, NY Medic/Rescue, and Pentagon Staff. These cards will be mailed in the coming weeks as we determine where they should be sent. Memorial Site: A memorial site is located in the courtyard on the Central Campus Quad just below Van Every. Elizabeth Ross and her art students are supporting Student Life with this work-in-progress. We encourage all in the College community to visit the site and contribute an expression of your thoughts and feelings, which can be pinned to a message board. Educational programs: A group of faculty members are working with Student Life to develop a series of educational programs, workshops, and teach-ins. Cross-cultural, international, and historical perspectives will likely be the priority subjects. Contact Mark Helms in Student Life if you have ideas about these programs. Meanwhile, at South Campus, Tuesday Roundtables are scheduled each week to provide an opportunity to discuss topics related to the crisis. The first of these programs features Ashamo Deem, a representative from the Islamic Center of Charlotte, and Mark Rosen, a Gulf War Veteran who has lived with Saudi Arabians, and will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 12:30 p.m. in South Campus room 1204. Counseling: Counselors have been available in student activites areas to discuss information on grief, loss, and stress, and will continue to be available in counseling areas. Counselors are also in the process of planning workshops on grief and stress. --Mark Helms ------------------------------ This message is from the Communicator. The project, the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE), is jointly funded by The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Lumina Foundation for Education and conducted by the Community College Leadership Program at The University of Texas at Austin. The survey, The Community College Student Report (CCSR), contains items examining student engagement and retention issues. Research shows that students who read and write more, and who interact in positive ways with their teachers and peers, gain more in terms of essential skills and competencies. Identifying what our students do in and out of the classroom, knowing their goals, and understanding their external responsibilities can help us create an environment that can enhance student learning, development, and retention. The survey will be administered in classes randomly selected by CCSSE to ensure a representative sample and to preserve the integrity of the survey results. Instructors whose classes are selected for survey administration will receive specific information from the appropriate administrator. Central Piedmont Community College is intent on being a leader in education, and this survey can assist us in identifying where we are and what further action may be helpful in our continuing work to support and strengthen teaching and learning. Your cooperation and participation in this exciting national study are sure to enhance our educational programs and services to students. You may learn more about CCSSE from the project website at www.ccsse.org. If you have any questions about the CCSSE project, please contact the Project Manager, Judy Ouimet, at 512.471.6807 or the site project coordinator, Terri Manning, at 6592. --Dr. Zeiss ------------------------------ This message is from the Communicator.
